Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

no vegan? why? sentient being is still sentient being. phrasing it differently doesn't change the fact that you will be taking someone life away.
@carinaekstrom1
@carinaekstrom1 5 жыл бұрын
Circle of Life = Live and let live. That is what it means to me, especially as a species that thrives on plants. Sentient beings can never be a "resource" unless I'm starving to death and have absolutely no other option. Looking at living beings as "resources" is going down a slippery slope that can never end well, and that is the reason we have massive problems with the environment and ethics today. I believe you must have plenty of other options and "having an interest" cannot be considered a valid reason to kill, in my humble opinion.

Hope you stay vegan. It's more than just about our novel endeavors (not having to buy food) - it's about someone else's life. Living off the land while buying a few items if needed is a small compromise to robbing another when we don't need to. Your land looks amazing, enjoy!

A 37 year old with a better body than most 20 year olds. I believe being vegan and your willingness to do hard work has so much to do with that . Plus you are not aging like a normal 37 year old with all those animal free nutrients. You'd give men years younger a run for their money in the athletic dept. If it ain't broke, please don't fix it . I like to use Jake as inspiration for younger men in my family. Just keep up with your proteins with all your hard work. One protein dry good that is needs no refrigeration is dried peanut butter powder. Sprinkle some over some over shredded apples and it tastes delicious. Keep following your dreams and do your own thing! Not to mention the good karma you get from not killing animals. Animals can think, feel and react, they are sentient beings.

Bullshit, plenty of finely aged omnivores. Stop drinking your own koolaid. Genetics is 80% of aging well. The rest comes from diet and exercise. Japan and Korea rank in the top 3 nations year after year for health/ longevity/ low obesity. They eat a hearty omnivore diet. Emphasis on fish and vegetables. They’re known for aging like fine wine. Grow up.

Jake, I live in Seattle, am a 15 year vegan and get my food from PCC, (pacific co-op). They have a chain of small grocery stores in the Seattle area. When I was a kid I had a lot of anitbiotics for some chest colds, pneumonia at 2 years old, but I was an athlete, did a lot of martial arts and somehow beefed up my immune system enough to it being pretty strong for many many and haven't had a cold in over 10 years. The antibiotics however did a number on my gut flora when I was young and it gave me a low tolerance to antibiotics all my life. If I take a series for a tooth infection, it turns in leaky gut and food doesn't break down and I can get pretty sick. I'm saying all this cause in Wa. St. they got a law passed in 96 saying that organic pears and apples can be sprayed with 2 different kinds of antibiotics as a pesticide for the blight, a fungus, that the crops here get, and the fruits are still considered organic. I got pretty sick not knowing this. Google it and it's all there, so watch the pears and apples from Wa.St. if your sensitive to antibiotics.

I appreciate your passion but consider that this is no place for vegan concern. Simply the commodification of creatures should be objected. Not ones who are seeking closeness to nature. Yes, with proper intention it is possible to not utilize animals in such a lifestyle yet this comes with super awareness and very thorough preparations. It's not malicious if one must supplement with natural things in nature and in fact they could still be considered vegan by its very definition even if they are eating animals in that situation. "Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."

I’ve found the key to staying vegan in B.C. is to supplement iodine (lugol’s iodine) and vitamin D throughout winter and fall (24,000 UI per day) and b12. And selenium (garlic and Brazil nuts). Otherwise the cravings for fish or other supplements kick in (eggs) etc. for b12, D or cholesterol. Hope life treats you well in B.C. your in good land! Enjoy living off the land

I believe all things are alive so i can't discriminate a animal from plant but i do believe farming animals to slaughter is not okay but we don't live how nature intended either so we can only do the best with what we have ~LOVE TO ALL~

B12 isn't naturally occurring in nutritional yeast, that's a common misconception. They are often fortified with B12. There are still ways of getting B12 from its source even in a modern, sanitised world, e.g. seaweed, spirulina, chlorella, but make sure it's a major and regular part of your diet to be sure you're getting adequate B12.

The ingredients are all natural: lemongrass oil is the active ingredient. The other ingredients are: water, vanilla, castor oil, lemon, and vitamin E. I've used this spray all last summer while on a sand volleyball team and it was great for gnats and mosquitoes. The gnats were the biggest problem for volleyball.

Mosquitoes, built smokey fires, keeps bears away too. It is pretty wet in AK so the first year, my plants drowned. We keep rice, lots of diff beans, cabbage onions and carrots keep well. Rare processed food. I love Japanese cooking as it cooks fast. I find it quick to cut off both ends of pepper then cut strips. Buckwheat noodles.

salt is important for health. our bodies do need some salt. not having enough can eventually, or quickly, lead to dehydration. you can get the nutrients of those other foods you mentioned from other foods you're probably eating, but if you are not eating salt, hopefully the foods you are eating have salt in them.

Nerdy Trivia: As a former vegetarian, one day I learned that vitamin B12 only comes from animal sources. I included honey as from an animal. Then I realized that people are designed to need B12. So I decided I was wrong for thinking I knew better than nature, and I started eating unfertilized eggs. Which chickens lay, regardless. They've always laid some unfertilized eggs via their natures. But farmers have caused over the many years, for chicken behavior to lay more eggs. What's a chicken to do? So anyway, I started eating organic unfertilized eggs. Then there was the revelation that everything in the sea eats something else, usually another creature. Deep thoughts. Anyway I try to be in harmony with nature.

I know Jake had rescue chickens when he lived in Az and I remember him talking about whether eating their eggs or keeping bees and eating their honey was vegan and why he chose not to. Since telling us about your dreams of off grid sustainability I have wondered if this was a topic that would be revisited. I love Geoff Lawton's KZbin channel and message and feel like he has it down as far as sustainable food forests go. You should check him out. I think that what you are choosing to do by living off the land and off grid and eating some animal products has way more impact on the world than living in a city and being vegan. I also believe neither one is the wrong or right way to live. I am super exited to see how your guys journey continues. I am super exited to see how the Yurt is coming along!

I love that you're willing to adapt and change your goals based on where life takes you. It will be amazing to watch your food forest take shape. Have you heard of Back to Reality at all? They apply permaculture techniques to gardening and seem to be plant-based or vegan from what I can tell. I love their approach with growing their own food and living off the land. They're also in Canada, but the other side I believe.

I'm 99.5% vegan for 9 years, vegetarian for 34. I'm thriving in my mid-50s without meat all of that time w/only occasional organic egg in the past 9 years. Also have done taiji almost daily for almost 30 years and yoga for 18. I hope you continue to eat a plant based diet and don't start eating meat. Wild animals need our compassion just as farmed animals do...and you have thrived for 18 years without eating them...why start now?? Your health and longevity will thank you. You should have plenty of protein from the nuts/seeds, legumes, and greens you can grow yourself! Let the animals be. :) Love your Spirit...don't change it. Peace, Brother.

Jake, I suggest you already transition your channel name to something else like "Jake Mace Offgrid etc", if your mind is made on not promoting a vegan lifestyle by following it strictly anymore. You can still be mainly plant-based for your health if you believe in that. Your ethics may have moved from diminishing sentient suffering to self-sufficiency and local food. From what I sense from you, you still encourage people in industrialized lives to choose a vegan lifestyle correct? (there must have been a reason why you initially titled you channel as such) If so, taking away the focus and pressure of branding your content under VeganAthlete would be more considerate. I myself have followed a vegan whole foods plant based diet for the past 5 years, but I don't market my lifestyle as such because I understand "Vegan" goes beyond diet. I completely understand that a 100% vegan offgrid diet in a cold place like Canada would be very very challenging. (That would make it so much of a feat if you could pull it off, and so much more intriguing to watch, because offgrid hunters are a dime a dozen) but I get that having fields of grain/ legumes to produce enough calories would be almost impossible in such a heavily forested shaded and cold place. In any case, remember, you are a public persona now, and your actions and choices don't affect only you and who/what is immediately around you.

Very good comment Siloe! I guessed that you're a vegan at first sight from your videos. Are you still vegan ?
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 5 жыл бұрын
Hi kgur. I eat a vegan diet, or more precisely a strict vegetarian diet without animal products. But I understand and respect the term vegan to mean a system of ethics centered on avoiding animal suffering. I became ovo-lacto vegetarian in 2007 because of the environmental impact of factory farmed animals. I progressed to a vegan diet in 2014-15 as I learned more about the health benefits (and felt better doing so). But being "vegan" goes beyond diet. I sometimes use animal byproducts like blood and bone meal or manure as fertilizers, not because they are irreplaceable (As I've been experimenting moving towards plant based fertility), but because they are a waste product resource that needs to be used to diminish concentrated pollution. They are not primary products to industry, so I use them as an environmentalist. I also believe it is better for everyone to drastically reduce animal product consumption even if they don't become "vegan." But Jake is not "everyone" or "anyone" he is a public person who branded himself through media as Vegan. He becomes a strong counterpoint to industrial farming culture, simply by showing one can thrive with an "animal free diet." In my opinion, if he choses to stay 100% vegan in diet, he will cause a greater good to environment and lives of others than if he choses to have a more local footprint by being a 100% localvore with sustainable animal products. Simply because industry is a fact of life for 99% of humans, and the stronger take home message will be: "oh well let's get some meat from the supermarket." This is all contingent with how he sees veganism ultimately, because if his initial rationale of no harm to animals is not what he holds as primary importance now, or if there are pragmatic unknown reasons that make, or have made a vegan diet for him something unsustainable beyond the local food aspect, then he has the freedom to choose a different path.

I've been eating a vegan diet for only 4 years and started primarily for health and environmental reasons. Meat grosses me out now, I'm pretty sure I was lactose intolerant, and my family is prone to high cholesterol and heart disease so eggs not the best choice anyway. With that said, from an environmental perspective, your plan to live off the land and taking the lives of animals in very natural way seems much more sustainable than some of my vegan choices. Also, some vegan foods are grown irresponsibly impacting the quality of life for the community where it is grown (avocados and bananas come to mind).

saw your video on using cast iron cook ware. But I'm going to suggest for your Asian "stir fry" style food using a wok. I found a really good non stick wok at WalMart for about 7$. I'm aware of all the bad press that non stick cook ware has received. But in my wok I use only bamboo utensils, so am in no danger of scratching the non stick surface. Clean up is extremely easy, just rinse an wipe. Enjoy the series and am thinking of a similar lifestyle when I retire.
