It is 2019 now and I paid $299 for mine but it is great deal all the same. I got it in 30-06 because I wanted a light weight mountain rifle and at 7 1/4 pounds it is light. I already have a 300 WM and thought the 7 1/2 pound Compass would be a bit light for 300WM. I had thought about building it into a 284 Win but it is close to perfect as it is for what it is. With a Buris Fullfield II it is under 7 1/2 pounds in 30-06 that is Ultra Lite Arms territory for $300.

Got one chambered in 270, haven’t shot it yet! Many good things about this rifle that is great! The 3 point locking lug, already set up for scope, light, the aluminum pillars for securing the barrel ! It’s not a bad value for the money! One could do worse! Great review! I love mine! Will keep it forever! Thank you for the truthfulness of your review! Highly appreciated! Overall nice rifle!

Have you considered filling the hollow of the stock and the hollows under the barrel with epoxy? Might that stiffen and "solidify" the stock and add some (but not too much) weight? I did that to a CVA muzzleloader I had once. The buttstock was hollow and (because it was a .50 cal muzzleloader with a full barrel) it was very front heavy. I filled the buttstock with liquid nails adhesive. That made it more solid and added a little weight to the back.

I purchase the 6.5 Creedmoor version and found it as you say very light to resolve this issue I took the recoil pad off took about 30 8mm cast lead 170 grain bullets double-bag them in a couple of Ziploc bags wrapped in electrical tape push that all the way forward into the wrist of the stock then rolled closed cell foam and ran that in behind it to the point they had to be compressed on with the recoil pad. This adds weight and reduces the hollow sound I may take the gun out of stock and epoxy some lead shot in the foregrip as well. With my first handloads I produced about a one and a quarter inch Group at 100 yards using a Firefield 10 to 50 scope it's on the high rings so I made a field expedient Style cheek rest which works quite nicely actually . I don't know that would recommend this scope as I had to send the first one back but the second one i now survived 39 cartridges loaded from the factory by Hornady and 20 hand hand-load cartridges all 140 grain.

The rebate mentioned may have expired, but every now and then there are still some unbelievable deals on this rifle. Recently got a Compass in .308 for a "Cyber Monday" deal (honored at the local brick-and-mortar chain store) for $220 -- or $150 off of their usual retail price.
@JDuBz8157 жыл бұрын
in my experience, most bolt action rifles, especially in the sub-$700 range have some loose fitting bolts when they are in the unlocked position and to the rear. Wouldn't call that a negative. Doesn't affect the accuracy or the operation in any way, not that I've noticed. my Remington 700BDL has wiggle room with the bolt open and everyone knows they're known for accuracy. Also, if your bolt has a floating bolt head, it's inherently gonna have wobble. It's by design. Just drives me crazy when people cry about that on a budget priced rifle. You can buy a really nice tight tolerance custom rifle for anywhere upwards of $1000 or you can buy 5 TC compass's. Can't complain about a $200 gun that works
@av8rbri4734 жыл бұрын
the truth have 3 BDL’s here and I can attest to the wiggle when all the way open; yet when closed, they perform above avg. all of them including the 7MM REMMAG, 30-06 and 22-250 are
@ronws20073 жыл бұрын
Awesome points. I find the bolt wiggle is not a problem and has not caused inaccuracies. Basically, once the lugs of the bolt are rotated in battery, it is not moving anywhere. And I think the 3 lug design is more secure. My TC Compass II in .308 Win shot measured 1/2" at 100 yards on the first two shots with Hornady SST 165 gr, a hunting round. The barrel heated up on other firings as I zeroed. And then I switched to Federal Nontypical Whitetail 150 grain and shot two groups. One was three shots measuring 1 inch on the outer two shots. Another two shot group that measured 1 inch with a barrel so hot I could not touch it for more than a second - ish. Awesome accuracy for deer hunting. For me, yes, the stock is cheap, on purpose. And I don't care if it gets dirty. This was made for dragging through the bushes and mud and to hike into your zone with it. Especially with say, a .300 Win Mag, you maybe hunting big horn sheep or elk and have to hike a while and having a light rifle to carry is okay because you brought along some packing foam for recoil absorption. Or put on a hydraulic recoil pad that you have money for because you paid so little for the rifle.
@RemoteViewr17 жыл бұрын
Respectfully, 300 win Mag is what it is. You are smart. I dislike recoil as much as anybody. It's why I will get the 243 and 7mm08 versions of this rifle; great review. I got the 308 win version of the rifle a 6 months ago and like it a lot. I paid 350 for mine and didn't think that was unfair. my stock is quit ridged, I couldn't move mine at all . accuracy is great and the 308 is not a basher with recoil.

With MOST mass production rifles it can typically take up to 50 rounds fired before they build up enough copper fouling to shoot "good" groups. Some even can take up to 100 rounds to group well. You also want to AVOID using copper solvents, like Hoppe's #9 until after several hundred rounds when your groups open up, the Hoppe's will strip the copper fouling and the rifle will shoot like crap for about 20 rounds until it fouls with copper again... Just use a plain gun oil, something like Breakfree CLP to clean and lube the bore occasionally to prevent rust.

Being a light rifle is a great problem, it leaves you a lot of options for mounts scopes etc. I like to use Burris steel rings and Styrka scopes and they are very heavy when backpack hunting this helps. Weight is very easily added but very diff to lower. If this were a review of a Howa alpine mountain rifle and it weighed in at 7.5 lbs it would be touted as a major accomplishment

As far as the bolt rattling all the way back, both of my 700 Rem's do the same thing. My cousin has a sporterized Mauser receiver built in 1916. The bolt doesn't wiggle, it waggles. Old gun with a no name barrel will still easily do 1.5". A decent barrel would change that up quick.

I took the butt pad off and just as it feels, the buttstock is hollow. I plan on filling the hollow area with foam, or even better micro (small hollow glass bubbles with just enough epoxy to make a paste). That was going to be part of my Pimp My T/C Compass video. If you don't want the lightest possible 300 Win Mag for hunting (carried a lot, shot very little) and you'd rather have a bench plinker that's carried a little and shot a lot, feel free to mix some epoxy and lead shot and use that to fill the hollow buttstock. You can always make a light rifle heavier, but you can't always make a heavy rifle lighter. It's hard to beat a good bolt action rifle for the cost of a decent pellet gun!

Thanks for your review. I am thinking of getting it in the 6.5 Creedmor. On guns like that if you pillar bed it and put epoxy resin in the forestock it will tighten the groups a great deal. One guy said he put a Mod70 target spring on his along with the pillar bed and got sub 1/2” groups. Also foam can be sprayed in the stock for that hollow sound and needed weight. Not bad sounding for a $200 gun.

Okay last post. More articles I have read state to use the hunter springs and not the target springs because they fail the drop test. So basically there are several ways to fix the trigger issue. You can sand the bolts some to shorten them to reduce the weight. Replace the spring with a Mod 70 HUNTER spring and still use the two nuts. Take off one of the nuts and use a lock washer. And lastly cut one to one and s half coils off the original spring. People have stated they had success with all these mods, but I would make sure I have replacements prior to trying any of these in case too light. Also always remember to do a safety drop test on the gun for reliability prior to use. Good luck.

The 7mm08 I got my kid last year shot 1.25" at 100 with cheap ass PPU garbage ammo. Good enough for something I paid $215 for. M-Carbo trigger spring kit is the only way to go with a Compass as well. The gun works, its a bargain. If you buy one with the intent on buying a $150 stock and trying to a bunch of shit to it to improve it, you should have just bought something better up front. I learned that lesson years back with a Marlin 817. Stock, trigger, and bedding all that jazz, I sold it and bought a CZ that shot a better first group than the Marlin did in its entire life.

Dang it man, now you got me wanting the 300 Win Mag. I was thinking the 6.5 Creedmoor or the 308. Now I can't decide...lol I just plan on using it for medium to large game as well at the range. However not going for long distance shooting in either hunting or at the range.

If you've not seen it yet I've also done a video on my 6.5 Creedmoor linked below and it's outstanding. kzbin.info/www/bejne/goWyhZ9rbsqWfpY

DEUCE AND GUNS Yeah I watched it before this one as I was interested in the 6.5 CM, but now I got a tough choice to make. Wish I could buy all 3..lol

www.kygunco.com have them ship to your local FFL and if you buy before the end of December you'll have a $75 mail in rebate to send in.

If anyone has this rifle, how long is the magazine? Specifically internal dimensions
@deuceandguns6 жыл бұрын
I just measured and it looks to be around 3.45 inches so you can't load them crazy long and expect to use the mag.

Apparent you don't own one. My 6.5 with minor adjustments to trigger and stock get 0.34 MOA all day. And now for another 175 you can get a pretty Boyds stock which actually makes it shoot better. It's a TC gun made by Smith and Wesson. It's not pretty but it shoots like a 3500 dollar gun plus I am not fretting hunting with it like I did with my 300 mag Sauer 90 DLX..

I considered getting a TC Compass but ended up getting a Howa. They still seem like a good deal, but I love my Howa.

he would have had better groups if he held the rifle and not let it jump group size is all on you sir . I got a Remington model 770 7mm mag six inch group at 100 sucked . but I got new scope and hand load my ammo now one inch moa at 300 yrds so cheap is not a bad thing you have to find the sweet spot of what your rifle likes

Pointing out some bolt wobble on a $200 rifle as compares to a $1000 plus rifle isn’t right. Compared to any sub $500 rifle it’s smooth and tight.

Here you go. amzn.to/2CB1Z9g I've had this thing on everything including a Ruger 10/22, 6.5 Creedmoor, 300 win mag, and 45/70 with no issues at all. Also, I recommend the Weaver quad lock rings.

Great video B.C. I would rather you be critical of something than giving a false review and it blowing up in my face or family members face. Does 6.5 Creedmoor have a similar recoil to my SKS? Looking for a long rifle for my wife who can't do much recoil due to a plate in her forearm.
@deuceandguns7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I've not had a chance to fire the 6.5 just yet but I'll let you know the second I do.
