Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.

Hi Nathan. Have you watched any videos of the newJD tractors sprayers planters or combines. 4 channels went to Iowa to a factory tour and drove the latest. Thank God your wheat crop did the deed. Trying for a little push and ya'll gotter done. Good job and to have just a adjuster wheel fail, well that is good luck. Even with a MOJO expensive combine, so many moving parts a lot more can easily ball things up and you miss the rain supply that would have started the double crop beans off good. So seems like ya'll were blessed this year even with the irrigater running as well as it is. Course everything has teething problems and this was no exception. But seems like you straightened it out promptly which could have not been the case because the people selling have an excuse for everything. But they fixed it which you will of course pay for with withered corn.

Can you control the header tilt function manually on the new combines? I remember cutting wheat that was down in spots and using the contour master I believe is what JD called it back then to tilt the head for down wheat on one side of the header, but we only used 30' headers. Congrats on a good harvest

Not that I know much about this, but looking at the wheat plants. It would seem to me you should plant rows really close together. Like 3 to 5 inches

There's not many planters/ drills/ air seeders that can plant that close. Some farmers have tried broadcast seeding but getting the wheat in the ground and even is pretty difficult

Every time I hear farmers mention Sulfur I am reminded when Dr. Johnson of Purdue University was sounding the alarm about the deficiencies taking hold 20 years ago. The result of scrubbing the sulfur out of the power plants burning coal where the sulfur would be distributed through rain. I can't believe this consequence was not foreseen and ignored like so many things that affect agriculture. The country needs to adopt the farmer and rancher mentality... before you do something, it has to make sense.

Yep that's a big contributing factor to why we need to apply so much sulfur now.

What’s the planting speed difference between bean planter and air seeder?

Not a lot. Pull them both 5-6 mph. The planter is 40' and the air seeder only 30' though

I am surprised that you dont think that you need to till that ground. You should be no tilling all your beans into corn ground.

How do you make any money on your crops? You are always putting more and more inputs on. Every pass and input is money going out of your pocket. Keep putting more things on to leach into the ground water.We all want that.

Well if they would sell the pully seperate from the rest of the parts it should be cheaper or better yet just sell me the bearing for the pulley, then it's a $5 part.
