Will the DT466E start in negative 2 degree Fahrenheit weather?

Dont wait for that gauge to sweep in the cold. You have to start quickly as possible. Thats how i got 140 started. The longer you wait the more strain goes on the battery.
@JohnPitt9206 жыл бұрын
One way to start it that may sound crazy. Pee on the injectors. The warmth in the pee will make it start right up. Works every time.
@vegibenz4 жыл бұрын
My grandfather used to know a guy who would pee on his Model T carburetor on cold mornings to help get it started!

I noticed there was no "Wait to Start" light. Does it not have glow plugs?
@yellowbusguy10 жыл бұрын
They do, just no wait light.

The Dt466 doesnt have glow plugs

the DT-466 mechanical has no plugs.. the DT-466E does have a grid heater

The DT466 was only rated to start 10 unaided, the T444E,VT365 and Maxx7 are rated at -20 as they have glow plugs, the DT466 have grid/intake heater even though the dash may show a glowplug symbol

The '99 that I drove for 5 years would start down into single digits, but it hadn't sat for two weeks prior to those temperatures. Thanks for the info!

I drive a 1983 Volvo B10M, that thing can be a prick to start sometimes! Usually have to pre-ignite for sometimes up to 10 minutes.

Probably so. It was just on the edge of starting.

That's not bright at all, by all means do it plenty. Loads of mechanics need another engine to rebuild.
@sunny-4206 жыл бұрын
You do know how to glow Diesel's in winter weather right??? Tip you glow at least 3 full glow cycles before trying to start at that temperature
@yellowbusguy6 жыл бұрын
The DT466E does not have a wait light nor any requirement to cycle anything. We were just screwing around seeing if it would fire at all.
@TuningDutchy4 жыл бұрын
@@yellowbusguy i saw the waitlight here in the Netherlands, how can't u see it while in front of the steering wheel?? Eye check is not bad for you mate,,, And btw give the diesel a time to start,, 2x attempting won't do it
@yellowbusguy4 жыл бұрын
@@TuningDutchy Those were not the only attempts. The glow plugs were cycled at least three times without cranking. We are not used to weather like that, it never goes below zero in Kentucky but once a decade.
@TuningDutchy4 жыл бұрын
@@yellowbusguy alright but cucling them for 2 seconds is tok less,, my uncle had a 3,3l turbo diesel patrol from 1989 and even with a good engine after 3x cycling and starting after 2 seconds per cycle it won't work, just because the spark plug don't get the time to warm up
@TuningDutchy4 жыл бұрын
Alright the busses may be newer but these engine are still pretty big and rough to start so yeah more time is never bad

More like cold crank.

i get that you don't plug them up in KY, we do here in OH, though. we're spoiled, our mechanic sometimes starts them up for us on blisteringly frigid days.
@yellowbusguy3 жыл бұрын
We have startup crews that go in early and get them started when it's below 20F. Below zero is very unusual for us.
@ryanbarker52173 жыл бұрын
@@yellowbusguy we're board owned and situated on high school property, have two mechanics, and i'm guessing about 30-35 buses, give or take, so we're not a huge, unwieldly fleet. i don't expect them to start the buses, but it sure does make it nice when they do. they'll usually do that once it gets in the teens.
@hunter74767 жыл бұрын
dose your bus plug in to a heater to warm it up so it starts better???? ours have that we plug em in in the winter
@yellowbusguy7 жыл бұрын
I generally doesn't get cold enough here to need those heaters. The temps in the video were very unusual. We had cancelled school because of the cold.
@hunter74767 жыл бұрын
oh it does in our district we have heaters

If you would give the GPs 30-45 secs to heat up cycle key off and on and another 30 for the plugs again and then crank up it should have fired up.... You simply didn't give the plugs enough time to preheat the cylinders.
@yellowbusguy5 жыл бұрын
Those were not the first attempts. I cycled the plugs 3 or four times. It was simply too cold.
@grantboi1166 жыл бұрын
They make block heaters and starting fluid for a reason DUH!
@yellowbusguy6 жыл бұрын
Starting fluid in a DT466 will cause a explosion and fire, so there's that and it was the coldest it had been in nearly a century. We don't use block heaters because it just doesn't get this cold here. Schools were cancelled due to the extreme cold that week.

One tone is the key on signal, and the beeping is low air pressure alarm.

was the gas gauge broken? it looked like it was saying you had little or no fuel..
@yellowbusguy7 жыл бұрын
The gauges don't really work properly while cranking. Policy is to always park buses with a minimum of a half tank. It was just too cold to start that day.
@briangrant17987 жыл бұрын
I knew the bus I rode as a kid, driver told me sometimes it had cold starting issues.. it was an older bus, not sure of year, but it was a 1700 series International..
@briangrant17987 жыл бұрын
oops I meant 1800 series
@yellowbusguy7 жыл бұрын
Newer buses with computer controlled injection don't have any problems in the cold, at least in Kentucky. Back in the day, on cold mornings, the compound would be so smokey you couldn't see the other side. Those old buses would chug and puke out clouds of smoke till they had run for 5 or ten minutes.They had mechanical systems that could not adapt to temperature changes that modern ones can. It's rare to see any smoke now and it usually means something is wrong with the bus.
@briangrant17987 жыл бұрын
that's how this one did. driver told me she would have to let it warm up at least 15 mins before she even tried to move it... otherwise she'd have to restart it atleast once.
