I bought one recently and I can't believe how much attention it gets. Almost every day I have someone comment on it from the next car over at the traffic light, or in the parking lot, etc. Very few people know what it is, and I think the lack of low-slung coupes on the roads these days makes people think it's something more exotic than it is.

I traded in my 1993 MR2 for a 2000 Prelude years ago after spending tons of cash trying to get several mechanics to fix an issue with the MR2, including the local Toyota dealership, all of whom failed. While I enjoyed the Prelude it certainly wasn't as fun to drive nor did it turn heads like the MR2. Having said that it was a nice car and I do miss it. It's a solid, fun car with good power. I've since bought another 93 MR2 and watching this vid makes me want another Prelude. One thing to mention though. The rise of prices for Japanese sports cars throughout the 90s into the 2000s helped kill off sales as did astronomical insurance prices. I rarely see this mentioned when discussing the demise of the MR2, 300ZX, Supra, RX7 and I'd say the Prelude as well.

I’ve got a 97 TypeSH I’ve had since 2011, ATTS still works too even with over 200k miles on it, which is incredibly rare as the ATTS is not cheap to fix and that’s IF you can finds parts, which you pretty much can’t. But oh man is it a dream to drive on some twisty backroads, add in sticky tires, stiffer rear sway bar and it just goes where you point it. Also I bet the driver has the height adjustment all the way up for the seat, it’s a turn dial on the side of the seat, gives you probably 3-4 inches of up and down adjustment on the seat. This Prelude also has the Motegi package which were wheels and lip kit all around. Whatever the owner did for the exhaust, it sounds really good, better than my Mugen twin loop.

If you ever get a chance to also drive a 4th gen Prelude, you should try that as well! Despite sharing the same basic chassis, they seemed surprisingly different, at least the examples I had felt different to me. Also the interior of the 4th gen is something to appreciate for its uniqueness. You gave the best description I've ever heard of 5th gen Prelude handling; it wants to go straight like an arrow and when you turn it hints it might want to resist, but never does. Kind of like dancing with someone who is a good follow. The 4th gen Prelude by contrast (though also a good dance follow) instead of feeling like straight like an arrow feels straight like railroad tracks - when you turn the wheel it feels like the rails are curving. The example I had had blown shocks, and the springs are soft anyway, so body roll on mine was all over the place but the wheels stayed ever firmly planted despite that. I can't wait to see how it drives with poly bushings and working dampers when I finally finish rebuilding it.

I also used to have a 5 gen, owned it for six years (2010-2016), J-swapped it, put in a 6-speed manual from an Acura TL, but it met an unfortunate fate - a big truck crashed into me. My passenger and I were fine, but the car was totaled. The engine was also broken pretty badly, but I was able to salvage the transmission (which went into my new car, a 2001 Honda Inspire that I still drive to this day).

The 5th gen has always been seen as very cool here in the states. Sport coupes died here not long after it's discontinuation and you could get these 10 years ago for next to nothing. If you said you had a prelude you were instantly cooler than all other "Honda guys" unless they had an s2000

As an American, its interesting seeing the more luxury oriented trim on the interior with the beige and fake wood...most (if not all) of this model sold in the US were designed to look more "sport" themed with gray/black interiors and no wood at all. It was always billed as a lower, sportier offering compared to the Accord Coupe, which did have a more luxury, touring exterior/interior theme similar to this European car. I'd be curious to know the different demographics that bought this car in Europe...tbh, I'm not even entirely sure who was actually buying the Prelude in the US being born in the early 90s, and not noticing Preludes (or cars in general) until the late 90s and early 2000s when it was a pretty niche, somewhat slow-selling car already

Good review. I've owned mine for almost a decade now and still love it. People bang on about how they're not rwd but once you drive one on a nice b road you soon get over it very quickly. What really killed these imo was the price. The original invoice for mine was over 27k. And in the late 90's that was a lot. They weren't designed to be raced or taken on tracks. They were meant to be luxury coupes aimed at the clk and 3 series. But at that price tag very few were willing to spend it on a honda. Not to mention the accord coupe and legend hurt prelude sales as well.
@arnehurnik2 жыл бұрын

@nicolasa.31922 жыл бұрын
@@sickbastard82 I wouldn't. In a brand new modern (ish) car you're not worried about reliability 200k kilometers down the line. The bimmer has a nicer interior, looks almost as good as the prelude, is rear wheel drive, and makes more power. JDM fanboying is a sickness of modern car culture, judge a car by what it actually is, not what people say it is. 5th gen Prelude is one of my favourite cars but for that price, no way. They're too expensive again now because of the JDM craze so knock it off before one of these sells for a number that starts getting reactions like the Type R Integras did five years ago

It was always seen as a Grandad car as were most bigger Hondas (Prelude, Accord, Legend) back in the day.

Ikr, it's not a granddad car. It's such a gem.

I love my 2000 prelude, also good to note the USDM Type SH was also fitted with the ATTS system. Unfortunately, if you have one of these models, which I do, you can’t just simply fit a lsd like you can in a base model usdm 5th gen. It requires a complete engine and trans swap to go to a standard lsd

I think what's great about the Prelude line is that particularly the last three generations seem equally loved. Not by the same people necessarily, but those who are passionate Prelude fans seem pretty evenly divided between those three generations, with none really 'hating on' another. The fifth gen, to me, is timelessly beautiful, and I think it still looks good in modern traffic. I especially love the headlights that were clearly inspired by the third-gen in shape, but of course modernized non-flipping pieces.

4th Gen was the bollocks trust me!!😌💯💯💯👍🏾

@@bezzyranx9839 Yeah, maybe I'm contradicting myself, but the 4th gen would be the one I'd buy first as well. It's just so fantastically '90s inside and out.

@@accord_aero_r that aggressive styling of the 4th gen also helped, I reckon

When I was shopping for my prelude 6 years ago, I looked at 3,4, and 5th gens. I wound up in a 5th gen and no regrets. And within the Prelude community I see plenty of the other generations in amazing shape as well. I love them all.

A neighbour of mine has got an older one of these with only about 27000 on it...

I have a soft spot for these as they were great looking coupes. The ones I have seen for sale on Autotrader recently all tend to be automatics or the slightly less powerful versions.
