The green crusties are usually the root of most electrical problems. When I was working, one of our Macks quit running on the interstate. After checking for a while, we had it towed back to the shop. After running down the problem, we found that the seal on the ECM was twisted when put together at the factory. After 2 or 3 years of winter snow plowing and treating the crusties had eaten the majority of the pins on the computer and connector. Looked at repinning the harness, but because of the way the harness was made and run, there wasn't enough wire to make it to the ECM. The only solution was a new harness and ECM and atrip to the dealer to have the ECM programmed.
@MrTruckerf3 жыл бұрын
Dang! That cost a bunch and no way around it. I had a truck which got struck by lightning, of all things! It fried the ECM and every sensor as well as melting wire in various places. I was out about 4 grand and we did a lot of the work ourselves.

Exactly... high impedance test showing voltage does not equal current carrying capability. Similar, but conversely, is how a bad battery terminal can sometimes start a vehicle, but then loose connection and not recharge the battery. I've tried explaining that one several times to people, but end up just having to do the work for them to prove it. Do you have a "toner" a.k.a. fox&hound set? I've used that a few times trying to figure out where a wire is broken. Doesn't always work perfectly (won't show break if it's simply high resistance), but it's another good tool for the bag. Also helpful for mapping wires when there's nothing to distinguish them from another. Thanks for the video and excellent explanation!

I really enjoy your videos and you are very knowledgeable with International trucks. I'm working on a 2001 International T444E Dump truck with electronic auto trans. I have a no start issue using the ignition switch. I have either no power or no ground going to trans shifter. I also have no source power at start relay on dash. It click when key turned but no main power. Could be a ground issue. Possibly none to ecm? With a remote starter button hooked on starter the truck starts and runs. But the electronic controlled shifter and transmission won't do anything. In your video you put a piece of mig wire in the back side of the ecm plug. How do I get the bolt out of the plug and the back cover off of the ecm PLUG? Any help is greatly appreciated.
@j.c.smithprojects2 жыл бұрын
ecm doesnt supply power to relays. it controls them. always start with basics. power and grounds at the batteries. then at the engine and starter. branch off from there. continue until you have checked them to each and every destination. verify you "wait to start" and "engine warn" lights operate. once you have verified these things, you can start to look at what is or is not happening. electrical diagnosing can be difficult if there isnt any direction or procedure. if you think of it like this, it might be easier. "what does the ecm and trans have while sitting and not running? what does it take for the ecm and trans to turn on? what does the ecm and trans have to see to crank?" then move forward. ecm and trans need power and grounds at all times. they need an key on signal to "wake up". if you have that at both, now look for do they have a "crank signal" from the key. once you verify that, now you look for what the ecm needs to have before it enables the crank prohibit to let voltage go to the starter. the ecm must see "neutral" or "park" signal from the trans. your automatic trans controller and shifter must be working properly for it to send the needed signal to the ecm crank enable. that is where i would start.

Great fix J.C. From finding the initial problem to tracing it down to a tiny little cut in that single wire. It’s truly surprising to me that the wiring harness loom could stop a truck dead in its tracks just from simple engine vibration over 20 years. Also looks like you caught it just in time too before it frayed even more wires in the harness as well. 👍

It only has 118k miles, but it constantly turns the warn engine light on and loses all accelerator control. The seller was turning it off and cranking it back up going down the road to fix it. When I drove it I figured out you could slap the accelerator a few times and it would come back, but the warn eng light would stay on until cycled. He said it started after they washed the engine compartment. Any ideas? Great video…

You can usually get the blink codes out of that truck. that will give you a place to start. it is obviously something that the ecm sees as a threat to the engine. i would start there. you can also buy an inexpensive scanner to read the codes and some live data. a company over the pond called "launch" makes some diy options.
