OMC sent out service bulletins back in the late 80's early 90's telling service techs to open the low speed needle valves out as much as ~3 turns~! I had already started doing that before knowing about the service bulletin release(s). The reason was that on many 25/35 motors I serviced kept sneezing, even after replacing the fuel pump, carb rebuild, and new OMC fuel fittings (in case the little o-ring inside cracked/broke), and all new fuel hoses! I was so happy to hear about the bulletin(s),, because my decision to go to 3 turns out on the low speed was vindicated.

Thanks for tuning in! I did some videos on a service bulletin that happened to me. 1990 30hp Johnson short shaft tiller, pull start. After I got it up and running, a six year old child could have started it! It was sweet! Well going through everything again I noticed the roller was way off on the timing marks so I reset it. The next day I couldn't get it to run right. Couldn't figure out what happened. Finally an old omc mechanic told me about the service bulletin for those years. It was to set the roller up past the two timing marks about a 1/4 inch. BOOM problem cured ! Never heard the 3 turns out but nice to know! Thanks again!

That era of 25-30hp was extremely finicky, IMO. Mine sneezed at cold start no matter of the needle setting. Previous owner mentioned that as well when I bought it. Sneeze went away quickly, within 10-15 seconds after a cold start. Hot start was no issue at all.

Off topic question. Do marine shops still rehub props or is that something not worthwhile? I’m talking about a small aluminum 30 hp prop. I just bought brand new one for under $200. It solved my problem and confirmed the old one is spun. Just wondering if its worth it to service the old one?

I have the same (99'/25) on a heavier deep V 14' fishing boat - I made an adjustable jack plate and found that the height of the motor was critical to top speed (prop set at the optimal clearance below the hull) I was surprised during adjusting and dialing height (lake runs)how much even 1/2" height adjustments up or down affected rpm/ speed/ drag of the prop leg, planing etc.. On my particular set up (W/long shaft) the sweet spot was 2" (adjusted or blocked up from the original transom height) = Max rpm / speed and traction W/13 P prop - I dropped the pitch down from 14 to get it up to @5800. The outcome of all that messing around was a surprising 4mph gain on top end , so I felt it ended up being worth the time/ learning experience - brought it from 26 to 30mph. Oh, the right amount of weight in the front of that boat will cure the porposing. lol
@Ray56z Жыл бұрын
Similar to my smallest boat. 14'10", pointed bow flat bottom, 459 lb factory weight with a long shaft 2006 25hp(kinda) Johnson. Angle of the outboard and transom are the exact same, cavitation plate is 1/2" below the bottom of the transom hull, 17 pitch. Would run 28-29mph but any chop or wakes would put it into a serious porpoise, even with 80-100lb in the bow. I installed a StingRay fin and solved every bit of that porposing and picked up speed to 31. It even hits that speed with my tank and 38 gals of saltwater in the bow.

If I'm not mistaking (which the wife says happens a lot) the Joe Reeves' suggested 1 1/2 turns out on low speed and 3/4 turn out on high speed needles apply to carburetors with front-mounted needles. On newer engines sporting a side-mounted low speed adjustment screw, the OMC manual says initial setting is 2 1/2 turns out from light sitting. Regards !
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Жыл бұрын
Hey. Yes, "initial" settings. But I always start a 1.5 turns out regardless of what the manual says. 2.5 turns to me is like underwear in a thrift store, I'm not buying it! Hahaha. This thing should not be sneezing at 1.5 - 2 turns out. I know this outboard, I "built" it so to speak. You may remember the "2000 Johnson 25 hp - Worst Case of Outboard Abuse I've Ever Seen" videos. Not my first rodeo dialing this thing in, it shouldn't be any different from the last few times. By the end of the day I had it out to 3+ turns due to lean sneezing. So Stay tuned for the next Episode ! Thanks again !

Just got a boat with this exact motor seems to be running to rich pumping smoke and sucking fuel leaving sludgy crap coming out the bottom exhaust after a run will adjust the carby as per your video and see how she goes.

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. That sludge is unburned fuel/oil- it may be pulling fuel through the primer pump- make sure the knob is pushed in all the way- I had a bad habit of not doing that! If the orings are bad it will still leak- pinch off the fuel line before you dial that carb in- then test run it again with it unpinched- Thanks again!

My Suzuki 55 stops peeing as I'm running. I blow into the pee tube and it clears up. Obviously there is something blocking the outlet to the tube, but I'm afraid to take it down due to the risk of snapping bolts.

Very common issue with the older 13 ft. whalers. I've had/sold 6, or 8 of them when I had my shop on the main drag. They are fun boats though! If you haven't already, read the book on the guy who invented the ~cathedral hull~ it's a great read! Sad story though,, he kept getting shafted by the big guys with the biggggg buckkkkkssss!!!

My 97 johnson 9.9hp is also about 2.5 turns out. Then my mechanic puts it on the water & adjusts it in reverse. That way l can get the slowest back trolling speed l can get. Which is around 8/10 of a mile per hour or .08mph on GPS. Purrs like a kitten😊
