You forgot to mention the Aurora. that car was positioned above the intrigue as a full-size car and that actually did competed against Buick and Cadillac. It did use a variation of the Northstar V8 and of course the shortstar V6 for the second gen.

I kind of think Olds overshot the runway with the Aurora. It was too expensive for its target buyer and Olds didn't need a halo car, it needed a volume puller like the 80s Cutlass which it didn't have by the mid to late 90s. As such the Aurora was a niche car and never destined to be a huge seller and I think it took too many resources that Olds could have better used elsewhere. The writing was on the wall by the late 90s. I personally think GM could and should have saved Olds and killed Buick but as explained a million times here on the interwebz, China was the reason Buick was spared.

I had this car. Mine was black with chrome wheels, and tan leather. Looked great. The engine had plenty of power and I could chirp the tires accelerating. Really spacious and comfortable inside. I could actually stretch my legs out, unlike in my Mazdas. I owned it for 11 years and it had some problems. The window motors kept failing, but I dealt with it. Final blow was that the transmission started shifting hard after about 30 minutes of driving. These cars were made in Kansas.

My Driver’s Ed car was a 2000 Intrigue GLS! White with tan leather. It was our teacher’s last year and the local dealer gave him a high end model as a send off. It was quite a different experience than the 1987 Dodge Daytona I was driving at the time.

The car pictured at 9:58 is an Aurora, which you failed to mention at all in this video. It was the first Oldsmobile model to have a modern aerodynamic design starting with model year 1995, and the designs for the Alero and Intrigue were derived from it.

Big time W body fan, and proud owner of a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. I've always wanted to drive another SII 3800. I had a chance to drive an Oldsmobile Intrigue several years ago at a dealer, back in 2016, and boy I absolutely loved it! Smooth as butter 3.5L V6 and 4 speed auto combo, nice gauges, and comfy seats. The Intrigue was well built too. I wish I could have an Intrigue to compliment my Grand Prix.

I feel that it should be mentioned that this car, yes the one in this very video in which Azren, a friend of mine acquired a bit ago, was my grandfather’s. My grandfather bought it new quite a while ago and drove it for a long time. After a while he saw no use for it as he had acquired a new honda. My friend received the opportunity to acquire the car for a decent price and allowed for Azren to have a car, and quite affordably so. After a while some issues popped up, as with all cars. One of the main issues was the crank position sensor, which has since been fixed. It's a boat to drive sure, but it sure was unique and fun.

Loved this video. I own a gold 2000 Olds Intrigue GLS and you're correct, it's wonderful. It has a dull brown/ grey dash with tan seats. Pretty odd looking combination. The only worn part of the leather is on the back passenger headrest where it looks like a small dog jumped in the window consistently! I'm reordering it along with paint for some barely visible scratches on the outside. I'm putting in a saddle colored dash cover, front and back, to stop the UV's. All accessories are saddle colored right down to a matching burl wood writing pen! I'll soon have a professional handmade matching set of leather 16"x16" pillows for the backseats embossed with the Oldsmobile logo.I guess I've pimped my ride without changing the legacy of the Oldsmobile. I absolutely adore this car. I've named her Pansy, after my grandmother. We both thank you for honoring her on this video! TahTah, Ms. Dee

Thank you for this great review. It is nostalgic seeing this video, as one of my first jobs was working at Chevy/Olds/Cadillac dealership in the late 90’s. The Olds Intrigue was a favourite to drive along with the Cadillac Catera and the very rare Olds Aurora. Highlights of the Intrigue were lots of power (for the tine), good handling, clean styling and much better build quality than the big Cadillacs. I was so sad to see Olds die off a few years later.

My first car was a 01 gls for $3.5k with 90,500 miles, and it now has 113k mile. I have spent $26k to keep it running from 2018 to 2023. Finding parts for this car in Tacoma, Washington, has been like looking for a unicorn and really expensive. It's an absolute pain in the butt to work on. Hopefully, people have one where the plastic is still intact, heater core and ac work, as well as the amount of solenoids and valve covers I had to buy for this car. The only thing I miss is that smooth steering.

I was fortunate to own a Final 500 I bought used way back that was someone's winter beater. Sad since it was low KMs when they got it, since whoever owned it prior to them obviously tried to maintain it. What a fantastic drive this car was!! Truly a fun experience. This car got me too and from Toronto to northern Ontario boonies, and also to St. John's NL. Never let me down when I needed it. Rust eventually caught up living in Newfoundland, even though the car was running well. Sad day when I had to scrap it. Wish I could have another one. So nice to see a review on this car!!!!

Thank you for this review. This car was supposed to be called Cutlass Supreme, but at the last minute, GM/ Oldsmobile decided to call it Intrigue. This car had potential. I preferred it with the 3800 V6 when it was offered. You gave really good information about the car and the history. Excellent information on the Shortstar engine. This car was as big as a 1986-1990 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight. that is why it was so roomy. There was supposed to be a car above it that was supposed to be called Antares or Anthem that would replace the Eighty Eight. That plan failed and that car became the second generation Aurora. Thank you again.

My uncle bought one of these in 1998. It was cool to ride in it when it was fresh off the lot. I feel like Olds and Buick were basically fighting for the same buyer. There was just too much class overlap between the brands. As far as I know, true American Buick hasn't even been around for over a decade. All Buicks are basically rebadged Opel and GM Korea (Daewoo) vehicles.

What strikes me is how similar the intrigue was to it's cousin cars from buick both the century and the Regal in terms of parts, trim pieces, electronics, outside rear view mirrors, obviously this meant that it's on a shared platform (the W-body) but even then you could distinguish them but they also shared the same exterior front headlamps setup with the cornering lamps that come on when making a lane change or turn. But all in all this was a car that had good looks, rode nice and did it's job. My favorite engine they should have kept in this car past model year 99' as an option was that renown 3800 series II alongside the short star twincam 3.5

I sat in one in a dealership arounf '98. I recall it was nice but the car was silver with gray leather interior so it was a bit monochromatic. Still, always wished I had one. Didn't 'need' a new car when this was out, and it was gone by the time I did. As others have said, only high-miles versions still exist around me, based on a search of used ones.

I miss Oldsmobile. I had a bunch of g body cutlasses and a 94 cutlass supreme. I think part of the reason the didn't sell is because they alienated their customer base and die hard Japanese buyers weren't even looking their way. By the time they were cancelled they had no nameplates previously used in their history. The quality also took a hit. The asleep for example interior looks like it feel apart in a lot of used ones i see though I've never owned one. Great review.

I'm late on seeing this video and commenting just found you about two weeks ago though. I had an 03 gls. I don't think it was fair of you to compare the 3.5 to the supercharged 3800. If you compare it to the regular 3800 since it wasn't surcharged and a fair comparison it had both more hp and torque and I blew the doors off my cousin in his 02 Monte Carlo SS with the base 3800. Don't get me wrong I had a 94 Bonneville with the 3800 so i know all about that motor too but imo the 3.5 was better just for the simple fact of the numbers. That car was a lot of fun and the gls package was top notch. the 03 had 6 speaker Bose stereo. And trunk access through the rear armrest. Mine was red not a fan of that grey color. There red stood out. The grey doesn't cut it. The chrome rims were nicer too. I have pictures if your interested hmu.

I would have considered the Aurora the car that should have saved Oldsmobile. That was much newer architecture, much more [ahem] intriguing against the Acura TL or Lexus ES, and more upscale than the Chevy Impala that had common ground with the Intrigue. The Intrigue was fine - easily better than the aforementioned Impala and did everything average, but it wasn't going to resurrect the brand.

These still look good today if a bit generic. It looks comfortable. W-bodies are nice cars. Fun fact: it's not true dual zone climate control. The passenger dial is just warmer or cooler than the set temp. It's not like you put in a number. Low effort GM. GM had too many brands selling the same car and had to trim down but it's still a shame they had to kill Oldsmobile. At least unlike Ford with Mercury GM made its cars actually look different instead of just slapping on a different grille + lights, trucks excepted. Oldsmobile didn't have enough brand identity to stay alive and had become an old man brand. Buick and to some extent Pontiac overlapped with the target market.
