I was at this race in the pit road area when I was a kid with my Dad while he was working. I still remember the atmosphere, joy, and fascination, and sounds of the cars😏. Even came home with a Formula 1 car souvenir for free😁. Too bad the track isn't there anymore😐😒.

"We need some help here" and the black flag immediately comes out. I guess that at the time Ganassi was a little too influential to let a backmarker possibly ruin JPM's race

Page was one of the best at that time. Something happened a few years later, possibly because ESPN/ABC wanted more focus on "personal stuff" and "people" but by the 2010s the quality of his work dropped dramatically.

In 2021 terms, da Matta won the race with an undercut on the last pit stop. He was 3rd when he pitted on lap 163, Andretti stayed out to 166 and Montoya 171 both of whom were in traffic. If da Matta came out in clean air he would have made up seconds in the time before the others pitted and that was why he led Andretti and Montoya when that last yellow came out. Cal Wells' thumbs up after da Matta passed Big Mo a couple of laps before the end was a signal that Mo, another Brazilian, did his countryman a favor in letting him by when it was obvious it was too late to benefit from staying on the lead lap. That was probably agreed to laps before and when Michael did start closing up, then they executed the switch. Was happy at the time to see da Matta win. Finally, the end of the story was also a sign of the times and the damage of the split to CART.. Wells left open wheel at the end of the year to start a NASCAR operation, as that series was booming. He ran Scott Pruett and then Ricky Craven in the #32 Tide stock car.

Was this a common occurrence with mechanical problems in CART back in the late 90's and early 2000's? Were the engines and turbos tuned too high?
@xSoccerxCorex3 жыл бұрын
yep, and cart kept messing with the boost to stop teams from tuning it too high but they'd still get around it. it would only be remedied when ford was left as the only engine in champ car in 2003 as everyone else left for the IRL
