I drive about 140,000lbs or 63,000kg loads every shift as an ore-hauler here in Ontario. The average person doesn't understand how heavy that is and how much it restricts our ability to accelerate. I get flipped off constantly for doing 35km/h up hills.

near to where I live in Germany, region Kassel, there is a stretch of mountainous "Autobahn A7" southbound and let me tell you I've gone uphill there at 10 Kp/h because some fool leading the pack fell to that speed. Autobahn in Germany means 80Kp/h for trucks, most drivers do round 85.

Here in india we haul 55ton gvw with a 300hp 6.7 cummins on semi truck. On flat highway we would do max 60km/hr. On downhill we may occasionally hit the 80km/hr limiter. On uphill it could slow down to 5km/hr or less if we have to use the crawler gear in a very steep incline. When going up Himalayas we don't load above 25ton. At 12k 17k feet that 300hp turns into 100hp. If going to the peaks of 19k we would not even load more than 15ton.

That was a pretty tough pull. And nice job backing down that hill. That is no easy task. We encounter similar hills regularly here in the back woods of Alberta. The skip a gear method you did there is how its done. Don't let the revs down to far in 4th, pop it out of gear and go for 2nd with your foot to the floor. It falls in nicely at wide open and its all good. Takes some practice but you'd get onto it quick. Great videos! Keep it up!

Poor guy probably hasn't been at it long. There is a trick to down shifting rapidly and he hasn't figured it out yet. But he will. Climbing a hill like that you need to stay in the powerband and keep the turbo spooled for a rapid rpm increase for the fastest possible downshift. It is most definitely an art, not gonna lie. Hauling to construction and pipeline sites on roads far worse than that I had to learn real fast and so shall he. That was a damn good save when he finally remembered to shift on that last attempt However lol.

He had a grey and black pete with a beautiful CAT motor, 18 speed transmission, hauling a LAND ALL trailer with hydrochloric adjustable trailer axles, the trailer would lift up from the front end to allow a big machines or an RV or bus to get on. With a winch.... And the damn thing had a fucking remote with a cable. I hauled that load of stone out if Ardmore, Oklahoma up in these hills. But i do remember when I weighed myself at the piolet/ flying J's i was at 98,000 lbs or so That was in 2006 nice times, NICE TIMES!!!!!

Velocity - momentum is key, he is taking too long to shift. RPM Gear matching speed shifts are needed ! Every second that that shush shifter is not in gear and the engine is not running at full torque you’re losing momentum and that’ll kill your chances of making it up the hill you have to be in the right gear to keep the engine it proper torque range get it in that gear at this deepest part of the hill and keep it there at nearly full throttle!!

Our top weight limit now is 174000. I bet he was running with his lift axles down too. Big mistake. Ain't no where to turn around. Lock the diffs in and give er hell. Hey man, you did good. Take this advise for what it's worth. 1. When engaging and disengaging diff-locks remove all driveline stain, that includes the truck being straight. After a momentary lift of the fuel and straight, flick your inter-xale and difflocks. If you don't do it this way, you will be replacing rear-ends. 2. Believe it or not, a smooth swing up a hill like that and dripping 3 and 4 gears at a time and cresting the hill in 1st or 2nd smoothly will be way less dramatic than the adventure you just went through. It's never fun when When you're in a situation like your in especially when it's you're own truck and it's your bills.

I felt that in my soul. I was sent with a tanker full of DEF once to a landfill and they wanted me to top the hill. The first section was about as steep and twice as long. Paved but running snow water sludge ans dirt coming down the hill as I went up. Truck crested the hill the load shifted to the back of the tank the drives started to hop and she came to a stop with me looking up the trailer on a 45 degree angle down and the load sloshing all over. Had to back down and slid the whole way back down. They didn't get that load that day.

Bro split high to low on hills like that you czn maintain momentum better. Instead of hitting 4 low keep 3 high to get good rpm and when you start getting low to like 1000 1200 split to low to get your rpm back..run 3 low till like 1000 1200 and then hit 2 high and run it to low hope that runs you through but if you hit like 700 800 in 2 low you jam her into 1 low like ya did at the end was a nice 4 to 1 shift btw lol brother nice run and your a very smooth operator

Jisus, that bounce in the second attempt had me dropping F bombs. Props to you for playing it cool. I was expecting you to blow something up. Glad you didn’t. I’d be having some words with someone about that road, built solely for stone laden highway rigs with that kind of crazy hill. On the attempt you made it you sure grabbed that gear at the end fast lol. Good stuff.

Being your first time in there you can be excused. We have a few hills like this in the woods in NB where guys try to run it and wind up doing a bunch of grinding and spinning and calling for wreckers . The spinning part makes hell for the guys coming after. Stop, put her in #1 (assuming you have a proper 13 or 18) 4Xlock and crawl. It only takes surprisingly few minutes and way less drama. Hero status btw for backing that btrain down!! ;-)

I remember pulling one hill on my 3 try and was standing up in the truck with my full weight on the fuel trying to hold on has the truck was jumping and spinning I make it to the top with the smell of clutch burning not fun but that's where I had to go to unload the fly ash
