Great review of both. I haven’t read this for many decades and feel I want to reread it now 😊

Cheers, Debs 😊This was only my second Clarke book, but I do feel like I can say that I’m a fan of his now - I love his style and his ability to make me think about big, conceptual ideas without feeling overwhelmed. Great author, can totally see why he’s one of the masters of science fiction! 👍

One of my future Kubric projects is to read the books based off his movies. Got 2 Kubrick filmmaking books (behind the scenes stuff) and what to use those as references for book to movie comparisons. With that said, I watched 2001 years ago and was bored to death. I had to fast forward so much. Glad to hear that the book is more entertaining.

Oh yeah, the book is far more engaging for me, is a fast read with plenty of dry humour. Hope you enjoy it when you get to it. Cool Kubrick project! 👍

I need to re-read 2001 at some point. It's been a long while. I did watch the movie fairly recently, it is a piece of art for sure, but one has to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it. 👍

Oh it’s definitely a stunning movie, objectively speaking. I just can’t really connect to it like I did with the book. Which is my general issue with Kubrick films, with the exception of A Clockwork Orange. Can appreciate the filmmaking prowess of 2001 tho! 👍

I thoroughly enjoyed this book when I read it in high school. If you are enjoying Clarke, I can recommend two awesome short stories; The Star and The Nine Billion Names of God.

Oh, fantastic - I’m in a short story mood at the moment so those recommendations are great. I’ll seek them out! Thanks Michael 😀

Interesting you mention Clarke's warmth. Logical that you wouldn't care for the movie -- Kubrick was icy as a filmmaker. Glad Clarke has worked out so well for you!

Yeah, totally logical - I’ve always struggled to connect with Kubrick’s stuff because of the distance I feel with his films. A Clockwork Orange is the outlier - I think that’s due to the nature of the content tho, the hyper-violence is so well portrayed that I cant help but have a visceral reaction to it, and the linguistic elements are fascinating. I really need to read the book, is on my shelf waiting… Am so glad you put two Clarke books on that big old list of SF - both books have been fantastic. I never would have picked them up if it wasn’t for you recommending them, I (very incorrectly) always thought that they wouldn’t be my kind of thing. Boy, was I wrong! Thanks, man 😀

I love this book quite a bit, just about as much as I hate the movie version. I honestly can’t understand why the movie is seen as such a classic 😂! I’ve read all the sequels to 2001, and enjoyed them. I’ve read Rendezvous with Rama, but hope to read the sequels sometime over the next year or two. I really enjoy Clarke’s books!

I’m not sure the 4th one (3001 Final Odyssey) was that good, but if you made it that far in the series you might as well keep reading and finish it 😂. I think this is a book that should have stayed as one or maybe two books. I think 2010 was pretty good. But overall I enjoyed them!

Oh fantastic, great to hear that the sequels are worth a go! I’ve been so taken with Clarke’s writing - a great storyteller who can really challenge me to think about some mind boggling questions! He sucks me into the stories so easily. Rendezvous with Rama will probably be my next Clarke as I already own it, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the 2001 sequels on sale (I’m a boy on a budget). Thanks for the recommendation! And yes, the film - I’ll stick to the book, thanks! Unless I need help sleeping… 😂 Many thanks for watching and commenting! 😀
