2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY - Does the sequel 2010 THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTACT explain it all?

An analysis of the ending of the events in 2001: A Space Odyssey and how the sequel 2010 The Year We Make Contact makes sense of it all. 2010 was based on Arthur C. Clarke's follow-up novel and it is apparent Clarke had a good comprehension of what went on in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece.

I've always had a soft spot for "2010" - I think it's a vastly underrated picture, but why would anybody need the ending of "2001" explained? The ambiguity is what captures the imagination.

The reason I've taken so much time making video about the ending of 2001 is because so many people asked me about the ending and gave me their own interpretations... and I don't think any of them were right! Hyams took a very bold step knowing full well he couldn’t meet the 2001 standard. Either look unoriginal or make something new (which is risky). It seems the cast and crew bought into this.

@@captainhaire I think the makers of 2010 did extremely well. The film stands on its own but you analyze them together today and they compliment each other too. Peter Hyams was no fool though - just look at Capricorn One and Narrow Margin. Both are great films. John.

2010 was a monumental undertaking and although Hyams doesn’t match Kubrick he did a fantastic job in making a movie that could at least not be discarded out of hand. 2010 is a gorgeous movie to watch and individual scenes really stand out. I am also a Roy Scheider fan so that helps. I do still love this movie and despite not reaching the heights of 2001 I don’t feel it did anything badly. Really impacted me as a 10 year old.

Great bits of memorabilia there John. I think 2010 is a great movie, although radically different to 2001, which is a standalone masterpiece, but then 2010 didn’t try to be anything other than a great sci-fi drama, and it was well shot by Hyams.

Absolutely excellent review. 2001 is my favorite film of all time. I’ve seen it over 50 times and still sit in rapt amazement each time I see it. Your analysis makes good sense even though as you say the ending needs no explanation as the film is more art than sci-fi.

2010 is very much a film that has to sit in the shadow of an all-time classic. But it's an intelligent, well-made film that adapts the 2010 book well. As you say, it caters to the audience more than 2001 did... arguably no bad thing. It grounds the story for the audience and gives you characters to care about. The characters in 2001 are virtually non-existent... except for HAL.

I think the basic summary is that you don't have to think for yourself anywhere near as much whilst watching the sequel. But I like it very much and I particularly like how it intertwines the two films so well. If Roy Scheider had have played Dr. Floyd in 2001: A Space Odyssey it would have all tied together perfectly. Then again, I can't imagine Roy Scheider playing the role in the same way that William Sylvester did and he therefore would have changed the tone of the film which might have resulted in it being almost completely forgotten today. 2010 is a bit different but it had to be to ensure success in 1984/85. I think you'll like it for the same reasons I did - namely that Keir Dullea appears looking just as he did in 2001 and so does the Discovery and HAL. A great sequel and a great science fiction film in its own right in my opinion. John.

Great review. In fact I've just watched 2010 via my projector and it does in some small way replicate that wonderful felling that I got from watching it on opening night at the superb Empire Leicester Square. Just wish we had a 4K version. Fingers crossed!

The Empire was fabulous but not quite so good as it was after the 1989 refit when I think it became the best cinema in the world. Sadly the laser show broke about 1994/95 and digital sound was played too loud which damaged the speakers. But I loved going there even after I moved out of central London. It wasn't the same though as the wonderful image quality of the 80s and 90s was a thing of the past by 2000 and onwards. I saw Prometheus there and it looked awful. John.

I think some people watching this video will see that both films are more closely related then they ever realized. Some have always avoided 2010 so maybe it will encourage them to finally take a look. @@moviecollector5920 - SORCERER is a William Friedkin masterpiece. Quentin Tarantino has had it on his top 10 films of all time. I've seen Tarantino's personal 35mm print and it's lovely. The Blu-ray is quite excellent too, grainy and filmic. Watch on the biggest screen possible and turn the exquisite Tangerine Dream score way up. 🎥

I hope many more people will now realize that 2001 is not quite as complicated as they always thought. We can tinker around the edges of what it's all about but basically it's a God story. And that can mean anything these days without meaning the Almighty as in the religious sense. John.

Possibly unrelated but if you havnt seen it the movie 'europa report' is pretty much a telling of the chinese 'tsien' part of the 2010 book that was left out of the movie, well recomended. Both 2001 and 2010 movies mean a great deal to me but feel like im in a minority that prefers the later. Would be great to see that get some 4k love, those 65mm effects shots are already superb on the blu so I imagine there is potential for something special there. There are a few out there who prefer 2010 and that's understandable because it is a top-notch science fiction epic but the difference is that compared to 2001, it's comprehensible with one viewing. We all need to keep our fingers crossed that 2010 gets the 4K treatment. And thank you for mentioning Europa Report - you're the second to do that so I'll look it up. John.

The Blu-ray is actually very good Roy but there is movement on the print. Unless you're' projecting or have a seven foot wide television it shouldn't notice. Whether or not we'll ever see a 4K release is questionable but unlike most films there's a pretty good chance. John.

I was lucky to see an exhibit at The Museum of the Moving Image that had many of the props and costumes from 2001. The ones I enjoyed the most seeing were Kubrick's Oscar for 2001, one of the primate costumes, and the star child prop used in the film.

I screened 2010 at our Cinema in 1985 and I was really impressed with it. I also visited the Very Large Array (New Mexico) in 2010 and talked to some of the staff there who actually remembered Roy Scheider and the other cast members during filming onsite, during production of the film. Unfortunately some of Clarke's later books were ghost written and didn't continue with the same themes as Clarke's original novels.

I suspect MGM expected 2010 to be more successful than it was because I think it was Universal Studios who had a theme attraction based on the film when I was there in 1987. I don't think it lasted long. John.

Great review! I really enjoyed 2010 but the dvd had a bad picture, but last year I managed to get hold of it on blu ray and the picture is much better so I bought 2001 a space Odyssey from the premier collection also because the special features were on a separate disc. But I've noticed the bit rate on certain blu rays has been lowered to less than 30 Mbps yet Arrow video and Disney can be as high as 40 Mbps.

It doesn't matter what the bit rate is Andrew, it only matters how you perceive it. Some excellent videos are far lower quality that supposed better videos but if they end up looking better then that is all that matters. John.

Hello John, I was fortunate to watch 2001 at a Sci Fi convention when I was about 14 or 15. I remember walking away from it confused by the ending and not liking the movie other than the amazing Visual Effects. This was at the time that Star Wars was still in the theaters and that was getting all the attention at the time. Then when 2010 came out I saw that in a theater in Santa Barbara with my 1str wife and really enjoying that movie completely. It made it going back to 2001 much easier though when I was younger still didn't get the ending. Recently I have watched 2001 in HD and then in 4k and that I thoroughly enjoyed much more. I really hope 2010 gets a good version of 4k as well as that movie really deserves it. Your explanation of the ending of 01 I believe is spot on and helps explain that movie much more. I never realized though that Roy was playing the same character as was in 2001, in that movie he talks to a daughter, not a son. On a side note a bit of trivia, when Roy is sitting on a bench talking to another gentlemen a black man, I have forgotten his characters name, but if you look at the end of the bench is Arthur C. I was looking at Arthur C. Clarke during that long shot of the Whitehouse where he is supposed to be feeding pigeons but I couldn't see any pigeons. He must have been feeling awkward chucking bread at nothing! I had worked out the ending of 2001 by the time I saw 2010 but I thought it was only my own interpretation. 2010 confirmed it so I've always been a little amused by some of the film related videos that purport to come up with whacky explanations as to what it was all about. But who cares really when a film looks like 2001. I can just sit there and look at it and any explanation or meaning doesn't matter a jot! By the way, Roy Scheider's Heywood Floyd does mention his daughter from his first marriage (but his first wife died) to Helen Mirren's character when they're drinking Kentucky whiskey. John.

Hi John! My father took me to see 2001 sometime in the early 80s. They were replaying it at our local 'giant' screen theater. The theater was just 1 screen. It was maybe twice the size of a normal screen or larger...i do not recall. It was housed inside a large dome...so we lovingly called it the big 'dome' theater. Anyway, I was only around 11 or 12 at the time, but the movie always stuck with me. As I got older and rewatched it, I always interpreted the monolith as just an object that sparked the first curiosity in what would eventually become human beings. The ending with Dave, I like to think the monolith was showing him that space and time exist as one thing. There is no backwards or forwards, everything just exists at the same time. Infinite, no beginning and no end. Hence why he saw himself at different levels of aging in the same moment. Also maybe to let him know how small we are in the whole scheme of things and even though we have evolved and made great strides in learning and technology, we still have a long way to go. Just my humble interpretation. 2010 on the other hand, I have not seen since it came out. I dont seem to have bad memories of it but I dont believe it left quite the same impact as 2001. Honestly, I kind of forgot about it. So thanks to your review, I must revisit this movie and watch it again, with a wiser brain and older eyes! Take care my friend! Greg.

That is a good interpretation Greg but you'll find that it's all a bit more straightforward when you watch the sequel again. And you'll be surprised quite how good a film it really is. I think people were disappointed with it in 1984/85 because it wasn't 2001 but it stands on its own and if it wasn't the sequel to that film then it would be much more highly regarded. Peter Hyams has made some great films and he deserves more recognition than he's had up to now. What was the name of your local cinema with the dome and where was it? John.

@@moviecollector5920 It was a United Artists theater, the 'UA 150' was the name. It was in Little Rock, Arkansas. Sadly it was torn down about 10 or so years ago, I believe. Was truly a great place to watch a big budgeted film. Also John, I did see your Enterprise 'D' in the background. I have the same one on my shelf as well. Mine will not light up anymore sadly. @@rednecktrekker9 The '150' in the name of that cinema may correspond to a projection format called D150 which if I remember the name correctly refers to the degrees of arc of the screen and the lens in front of the projector was designed to focus the image all the way across the deeply curved screen. It wasn't as deep as Cinerama but pretty close. My Enterprise D needs new batteries but I think most of the LEDs have given up now anyway. It still makes the noises though which my wife loves to keep pressing over and over again. John.

2010 will always be a sequel but I think it's a great sequel and does much to make 2001 watchable for those people who never comprehended it at all. The basic premise of 2001 is more straightforward than most imagined when it was originally released and then television broadcasts did nothing to enhance its reputation. But watch 2010 and then 2001 seems to make perfect sense. I don't think it needs to make sense really, just sit back and look at it. Something that can be done with another film we love by the name of Blade Runner. John.

Scintillating dissection and appraisal of Kubrick's second greatest film John (only Barry Lyndon is superior in the endlessly impressive pantheon and oeuvre of Kubrick masterworks). In fact i really don't think i've ever seen or heard a more magnificently coherent, brilliantly cohesive, and totally unpretentious explanation of BOTH movies, absolutely superb. I actually think 2010 is marginally the better of the the two movies simply because it is (as you said) a much more straightforward and entertaining piece of popular film-making by a director (Peter, 'THE RELIC', 'OUTLAND', 'END OF DAYS', Hyams) who has been very under-rated now for almost 50 years.

Purchasing good features like 2010 is prohibitively expensive now more than ever as there are only a few second hand copies still around now. But just having a quietly drumming film projector has something magical about it. John.

@@moviecollector5920 My Uncle had a Kodak movie deck in the late 70s, early 80s. A few years before we got a VCR. All we had back then at my house in Amityville was a few channels and HBO which my brothers friend helped up steal. I cried the day the cable company caught on and cut us off. Anyway, my uncle would show us movies on holidays and birthdays, etc. I was intrigued. I've had a lifelong fascination with all things media starting with records and more specifically, Beatles records. You have definitely shown me how many complete features have been released on Super 8. I'd love to see someone make affordable projectors again. I suppose I can work a little overtime and get one off ebay but that's gonna have to wait since I still need to pay off my house, my car, etc. Until then, I really enjoy seeing your collection!

Recently purchased the 4K version of 2001 after hearing about the huge praise the remaster was receiving and since I don't own a physical copy I picked it up, was hoping for the same treatment for 2010 but unfortunately it's yet to recieve a 4K release so I just settled for the blu-ray. Still should make for a great weekend though!

The Blu-ray of 2010 is good. It's not the standard of the 2001 transfer though but still a good 'un. If you project though you're going to find the left to right weaving of the print a little distracting at times but if you're watching on a television it may not even notice depending on how wide the telly is. I think 2010 is a great science fiction classic in its own right, it's just a little different in approach to the incomparable original film. John.

Darn. I was hoping you were going to announce that 2010 was coming out in 4K. As I mentioned to you before, my all-time favorite movie is 2001. I actually saw it in the theatre with my father. I loved it; he hated it. I once watched it three times in a single evening, once with the commentary track with Dullea and Lockwood. The track is excellent; although it is obvious the two actors were not in the same room together at the time. I have always been fond of 2010 and consider it to be an underrated sequel. I have read all the novels and I honestly believe you are wise not to read the remaining two books. I am envious of your memorabilia. Another great video. I still need to see Open Range; did you ever see Futureworld?

Not up there with Westworld as far as we are concerned but very much enjoyed it and pleased to finally have the Blu-ray. Shame 2010 isn't in 4K but it may make an appearance. Clarke’s novel of 2001 explains a lot and as a 12 year old in 1985 when I read it, a great companion to the film. 2010 is a favourite of mine and I remember seeing it on release at my local cinema in Blackburn. One of the reason the film works so well it is so different to 2001. It would have been easy to TRY and make a similar toned film and fail miserably. I believe Kubrick has a large part to play as Peter Hyams asked him for permission/advice and Stanley said “make the film that you want to make”. The cast of 2010 makes is such a good film with Roy Scheider eclipsing William Sylvester’s slightly one dimensional portrayal as Floyd in 2001. I find Scheider as the conflicted family man to be a perfect backdrop to him feeling responsible for Discovery One. Will this ever be released in 4K? Who knows but I’m glad I have the Blu-Ray.

My recollection is that the novel was being written whilst the film was still being shot so that is why the ending doesn't concur entirely. I think Clarke did a good job of tying the film and the book together with his follow up novel and the film completely the process. Two great science fiction films that are improving in appeal with every year that goes by. John.

Another great review, John! 2010 is a fine movie that deserves more respect than it gets. Is it on par with 2001? No, how could it be? 2001 is a mysterious piece of art that continues to be analyzed to this day. And Kubrick was a genius who probably buried hidden meanings under other hidden meanings. Having said that, Peter Hyams delivered an excellent movie that feels authentic to its time. It's well written, beautifully filmed & directed and the acting is pretty much perfect all around. Roy Scheider delivers an excellent performance (as does the entire cast) lending the whole movie a shared humanity and authenticity. Even HAL is humanized, and his scenes with Balaban and Dullea are some of the best in the film. Great review, man!

Thanks Bill. You've summed the films up darned well there too. I loved 2010 immediately I saw it. I suppose it helped that it was a 70mm blow-up at The Empire. It never quite matched that on Super 8 but you can probably imagine the excitement of getting that print just a few years later. Amazing really. And I've been watching it on our ten foot roll down screen ever since. Don't often run it in our dedicated cinema room but I'll get back to the ten footer soon... I hope. John.

Great video as always! Well I remember 2001 being offered as a Cineavision full length feature on Super 8. I didn't buy it back then, since it was very expensive. Shortly after I read in the German film collector magazine "Die Leinwand" (=the movie screen) that the quality is not the greatest to put it mildly. I wonder why it hadn't been made from a better source. 2001 once aired on TV somewhere in the early 1990s here in Portugal (I moved here back in 1985). It was clearly a heavily letterboxed 16mm scope print, some older films were still aired from old 16mm prints, mostly 3:4. It looked very bad as well. Probably a run-off-the-mill print made from a 35mm release print, through a 16mm interneg. The Super 8 print of 2010 looks wonderful though! There are fantastic videos about the making of 2001 by Cinema Tyler. Originally Kubrick wanted to include extraterrestrials, but he didn't like the results. So the mysterious ending can (in part) be explained by failed attempts to be more concrete/explicit. I like 2010, but Kubrick's 2001 remains mind blowing. Everything looks so pristine and perfectly composed, easily explained since all equipment is brand new, the complete opposite of, say, Alien. Cineavision prints rarely looked good because there was an extra process involved in producing the reduction master but in the case of 2001 I think you are right and a poor quality master was used in the first place. At the time though there was nothing else quite like it on Super 8 so I suppose it didn't matter too much. Today the print has faded a bit so it's not even as good as it was back then. I think it's just as well the aliens were abandoned for the ending of 2001 because they always look wrong. Even the alien in Alien is clearly a man in a suit if we're being truly critical but Ridley Scott managed to get away with it. He's a clever chap that Ridley! Ultimately making the monolith the symbol of the creator works well it's just a shame that no one understood it back in 1969. As I keep saying though, who cares what it's all about when a film looks that good? John.

I think you mean that you saw it in the IMAX cinema Johnny. There are very few IMAX films but 2001 A Space Odyssey was shot in 65mm for 70mm release primarily to Cinerama cinemas. It wasn't Cinerama but just like the watering down of the IMAX name today Cinerama were passing off non-Cinerama 70mm films as Cinerama in an attempt to stay in business. To see Cinerama anywhere in the world today you have to come over to England to Bradford. They are showing This Is Cinerama next week I think but that may be the only Cinerama presentation this year. Let's hope the success of OPPENHEIMER gets IMAX back to presenting IMAX films in IMAX cinemas such as your one in Melbourne which is one of only about 30 left in the world now. I bet 2001 looked fabulous on that massive screen however it was being presented. I hope it was 70mm though. John.

Finally watched 2010. I completely agree with your not wanting to read the additional available books. I think if they made further movies that’s they would ruin the impact and strength of the story. At least that’s my feeling after reading the synopsis of the additional books. I think 2010 was fairly good! I bought the bluray version and projected it onto a 120” screen. I had a great time and the practical/digital effects, etc were good! I wasn’t brought out of the immersion into the film because of bad filming, colours, acting. I think it was well worth the watch!

I can never work out these diagonal measurements and I do wish that the industry would do away with it as they no longer need to fool people into thinking they're purchasing a television that is wider than it really is. I remember that a 14 inch portable was really 12 inches and a 28 inch widescreen was just over 23 inches but that's about all I ever really got to know. I expect 120 inches diagonal is about 8 feet wide but please correct me there. As for the film 2010 The Year We Make Contact, I saw it originally on the 56 foot screen (I think it was 56 feet but not far off it it wasn't) at The Empire Leicester Square and it looked amazing. That would have been a 70mm blow-up print of course so straight off the original negative rather than the internegative which is two generations down. I was so impressed that I went back to see it again the following week. It's another follow up to a previous masterpiece where we couldn't have wished for a better sequel; I put it in a class with Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Doctor Sleep which were all great sequels and great films in their own right. @@moviecollector5920 105” W x 59” L screen Or 8 3/4ft W x 5ft L. The more I hear about how film is shown in England or over seas in general, the more I dislike how BC Canada does film. Everything is digital projection as far as I know. The last time I was able to stand next to and view an actual projector with film reels was back in 1990-95. My home town theatre had the projector both door just to the side of the main theatre entrance and right next to the popcorn/candy counter. I would stand there as a kid watching the projectionist adjust settings and switch reels. Movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Ninja Turtles, Dick Tracy, Home Alone, Back to the Future III, etc. That theatre was my favourite place to go. Then the family that owned it had several break and enters occur at the theatre and it cost them too much money to repair the equipment that was damaged. Like the screen being cut aggressively and the projector smashed. We had to go out of town to watch movies. Which was horrible.

@@jeremyj. I hope the vandals responsible for the break-in and the damage were taken away and shot! Now that video has taken over everything worldwide for home sales seems to be done in diagonal measurements. I'm pretty sure cinemas don't exaggerate their screen sizes but perhaps that will come given that in general they've got smaller over the past 35 years or so. 8ft 3" in a good size for a home screen. The wall I currently use as a screen is masked down to about 7ft but because it's a small room it appears to be bigger. A bigger room needs a bigger screen so now that winter is here I plan to use our 10ft screen again. Planning to show it being unfurled in the next video which may be something completely different - the 1977 Star Wars press pack. John.

I always understood that Kubrick had very different ideas from Clarke who was very much into scientism and the rational remembering that it was Kubrick who had the final say and kept Clarke in the dark with a lot of what he filmed and I think Clarke then had to write sequals to course correct and explain HAL's behaviour as one of many examples. 2001 is my favorite film just because I think Kubrick created a work that could be understood on a lot of levels and was left open to interpretation.

My recollection is that Arthur C. Clarke wrote the novelization while the film was still in production and things changed during the filming which is why the book doesn't fully correspond. But it was all brought together in the follow-up novel and the film. As the general conclusions of both book and film sequels corresponded with my own interpretation of 2001: A Space Odyssey I don't think there's much left that's open to question. But then again, I read and watched so much science fiction as an adolescent and young man that I was possibly one of the few to fully grasp it all. I even understood Interstellar for gawd's sake! Kubrick was the genius creator of 2001, while Clarke a sci-fi writer capitalized on his association with 2001 to market as a 'sequel' his story 2010. 2010 as an acceptable Sci-Fi movie, shouldn't be considered as 'explaining' Kubrick's 2001, though regrettably it often is taken as such: prefer that no sequel would ever have been made, but profit motives wouldn't support that.

You are not wrong John in regards to the multiple theories out there. I believe Kubrick and Clarke purposely made it ambiguous because they wanted an Alien intelligence to be beyond our compression, so by playing with time and dimension in the Star Gate sequence, it was supposed to be ethereal. The fact that Bowman could see himself at different times implies he is beyond our understanding of how Time works. He is almost in another dimension, another realm where Time and Space is being bent so that he can be studied. Bowman becomes the next evolution of Man as Moonwatcher (the ape) once was. That bit was in the book.

The book was written while the film was still in progress if I remember correctly and the two differed somewhat. Clarke's take on it was a little different from Kubrick's but fortunately Hyams film married the two together and Bowman became a messenger just as some chap by the name of Jesus had about 2000 years before. I suppose that was an inevitable inference back in the 60s because religion was still rather dominant. John.

You'll have to track down a 70mm screening somewhere. I don't think either of the two Cinerama's are currently operating so there's no chance of seeing it on a deeply curved Cinerama screen in the USA but the Bradford Pictureville over here ran it in single strip Cinerama last February apparently. I managed to miss it! Saw it in 70mm just off Leicester Square eight days ago though and if you haven't seen the video about that then it was the last one I uploaded. 2001 is quite possibly the most important/influential film in film history. To be correct the effect produced from you called "split screen" was actually "Slit scan", also used for the Jon Pertwee Dr Who title sequence. Pity the Cineavision 2001 was cropped to 2.35:1 from the single strip Cinerama ratio and the Super 8 prints of 2010 were cropped to 2.66:1 from the Panavision ratio.

How do you store your actual film prints? I’ve never gotten into them myself, like most movie collectors i started out on VHS (sadly, after a while having to clear out since I no longer even had a VHS player) and started my current collection on DVD and subsequent digital media (i missed out on Laserdisc as it was a lot more limited and specialist media that I could not really afford or invest in at the time). You seem to have a number of prints in your collection, and given how they can easily degrade and are perishable, and it might be interesting to see how you care for them since I presume they need a lot more maintenance and caring for than DVD discs?

Like all film you only need to be concerned about pre-1982 prints as low fade stocks became the norm after that. This means all the best picture quality features, shorts and trailers are on polyester, low fade stock. You stick 'em on the shelf and forget about them until you want to watch them again. We always run a dehumidifier in the house anyway so they've never stood much chance of getting damp but in addition to that, every few years I give the more special prints a clean with film preservative and cleaner to get rid of any dust build up and to ensure the emulsion side is kept lubricated. Emulsion can dry out and craze but something like Film Guard deals with that. Basically, film is easy to store but more of a hobby than video which I consider a pastime more than a hobby. LaserDisc was more like film collecting than VHS which was rarely much more than poor quality but thankfully things have improved beyond my wildest dreams. The computer nature of the images being produced on domestic equipment does mean we've lost the more natural look of previous formats and most notably film, but it's amazing to be able to project video that looks like decent quality film in the home. The last couple of years haven't been as good and disrupted by Covid but hopefully in the years they will be picking up. Happy to chat through the mechanics of the whole weekend. 2001: Aspace oddyssey is one of a kind movie experience unlike anything else. As a piece of art you can put anything in there to explain it. It simply makes you think as it is more of a philosophical piece of film and therefor is open for any points of view. 2010 is a conventional sci-fi drama and therefor it is not as interesting but it is still a very good movie. So many people have issues with the ending of 2001, and issues with how 2010 looks like a less flourished sequel. For me, 2001's ending provides wide scope for your imagination to fill in the blanks, and as for 2010, it's a well crafted picture even if it isn't as popular.

I recently saw this movie for the first time a couple months back after finishing 2001 for the first time, and of the two movies I think I like 2010 better as a movie. It's something that I'm more inclined to revisit than 2001, as amazing as 2001 is of course. I first watched 2010 in a VR IMAX theater, the screen was a 16:9 proportion but it was just really big and it was a pretty sweet way to watch that movie, though I'd love to watch it on that film print you have just cuz I think that'd be really cool. I recently rewatched it again where I just decided to rent it from Amazon Prime video and unfortunately that version was only in stereo so I couldn't take advantage of my surround sound which sucks. I definitely need to pick up the Blu-ray for it as I already have 2001 on 4K. I was also able to find a lot of us copy of the soundtrack to 2010 on the internet archive and it is a great listen. I think my favorite track is New world, the orchestral police that plays at the end of the movie before Also Sprach Zarathustra. It's very beautiful.

2010 is a more traditional and perhaps substantial film. But 2001 is one of those films you can just look at and dip in and out of whenever you feel like it. 2010 made a big impact on me when I saw it at The Empire on their huge screen and that's why I came to end up with a copy on Super 8 'Scope. It's a Kempski Fims print from Germany and of very good quality, just like a film print should be but being mastered and printed in the late 1980's, it's a step up in quality all around over what we had on Super 8 until just a few years earlier. Cinema in the home had truly become a reality by then thanks to the advancements in Super 8 production capabilities. As for stereo sound, you should be able to decode that soundtrack into Dolby Stereo which is known as Dolby ProLogic for the home market. There must be something on your amplifier to facilitate that. Unfortunately my surround sound setup is just a Logitech z906 which I bought because I'm just starting out with having a surround sound setup, although because I'm able to take advantage of creative's sound blaster connect software on my PC I'm able to use that to decode ProLogic decently when turning on the fake surround sound up mixing thing. Although with some test patterns there is some bleed from the center channel into the rear but when watching stuff and not just using test sounds, you don't notice it. Although I can't test it now because the rental expired yesterday.

@@chrisfratz It is unusual to get dialogue bleeding into the rear channels but it does happen if there is any difference between the mono dialogue on both tracks. My suggestion is to just turn it up louder and forget about it because it doesn't really matter once you're enjoying a film. Super 8 stereo magnetic tracks always had a certain amount of bleed but it was just nice to get a pseudo Dolby Stereo (aka ProLogic) along with top quality big screen projection in the home at the time. We're talking more than 30 years ago here.

Well.... After this I had to go into town and buy it. I always remember 'breaking' when Hal asks 'will I dream'... Always felt a touch of sadness for Hal. No way near as good as 2001 but that's just because it's a different style of film altogether.

I feel that if it had have been a standalone film and 2001 had never have been made then it would be a very highly regarding film in its own right. I believe there is a cut of 2001 by Steven Spoderbergh which makes a more explicit connection between HAL and the monolith, implying AIs created the monolith to educate humans so they in turn would create AIs in the future . Rob Agers also has an interesting take. Not sure I agree but worth checking out his channel

An underrated sequel. Probably a minority opinion but I find this one a lot easier to watch than 2001. I love 2001 and it’s definitely a more technical marvel of a film but I find you’ve got to be in the mood to watch it. Where as 2010 is more digestible, however not as good. Regardless, it’s a competent sequel.

I feel like the books, while they still retain enough ambiguity to be captivating, are somewhat "better" at implying what the object of the monoliths is. I've read the first 3 of 4 - I'll get to the fourth when I've got some time to read what I like (doing a masters literature eats up any time I've got for reading for pleasure). I thoroughly enjoyed them all, particularly the first one. Have you ever read them?

I read 2001 and 2010. I don't remember all the detail but my recollection is that Arthur C. Clarke did a good job of tying it all together given that his novelization of 2001 was not entirely accurate to the film in the end but he managed to get around in with the follow-up novel. It all came to a satisfactory conclusion so I have to admit that I didn't seen the point of a further book... but I expect it generated a lot of money. John.

Afternoon John. 2010 another film I watched at the pictures with my nan. Looking back she might not have been keen on taking me to see some of the films I wanted her to take me to see. I haven't seen it since I first saw it on the big screen until I bought the same Blu-ray you have. It's definitely more of a straight forward and not as esoteric film as 2001, I enjoy the film though. When are we going to have dolphins in our lounge pools as pets?

It makes me chuckle to see the CRT monitors throughout "2010" when 15 years earlier (9 years in story time) they're all flat (albeit rear projection for production sake) and closer to what we have today. The thing that is jarring is that they're even CRTs on the Discovery in "2010!" No attempt to recreate the previous look of these displays.

I have some perfectly intelligent friends who believe that rubbish and no end of talking to them will sway their opinion. But they won't eve take the time to look at any of the moon rover missions which confirm beyond any doubt that the moon was explored and so they just continue making fools of themselves.

2010 was really popular here in Portugal when it was released back in 84. It had great reviews and people came to see it several times. I was 14 at the time and loved it. I’ve seen it in the cinema in subsequent years through out the 80s when movies came back to town several times and each time the theater had a good crowd to see it. This one and Dune by David Lynch always had a lot of fans here in Portugal and cinemas were always filled no mater when these movies came back. I’ve seen 2001 when I was a kid back in 77 in the cinema too. I was totally confused but the images never left my mind. I read all the novels and I think 2010 should have been the last one. 2061 is a bit pointless and 3001 mostly ruins the universe built in 2001 and 2010 when everything is more about describing the future on earth and the way computer virus operate than has to do with real answers for 2001 and 2010. The 2001 4K Blu-ray edition is incredible. It’s my best 4K along with blade runner which is also incredible in 4K. You have great memorabilia there for 2010 , the only thing missing is the marvel comic book adaptation which is not bad at all and which I have also. I still love Peter hyams 80s sci-fi and as a movie sequel I think 2010 is excellent. At the time the only negative thing I’ve read about it was from scientific critics which said the credibility of 2010 was ruined by the fact that heywood Floyd was at the beach with a portable laptop computer connecting to some wireless web of information. To them that scene was absolutely ridiculous from a science point of view because there was no way computers would be present in our homes in 2010, much less portable hardware and even less imaginary wifi networks of information. Spaceships to Jupiter all cool, laptop computers science nonsense that ruined the realistic feel of the movie. How times have changed. 😂

Arthur C. Clarke did predict the future of home computing Luis so you'd think the film critics would have known about that before saying any negative about 2010. Peter Hyams has made some great fllms and after 2010 surely Capricorn One has to be his next best but Narrow Margin is a classic too. I think I was 21 years old when 2010 came to town and I was so captivated by it on the huge screen at The Empire that I went back to see it the following week or the following night, I can't remember for sure. I never forgot how impressive it looked and that was why I ended up with the Kempski Films Super 8 'Scope feature seven or eight years later. I've never tired of watching that print and my opinion of it is that it is more impressive to look at than the very good Blu-ray. Not bad for a film gauge with an image area just 6mm across. We blew an extract from that print up to 24 feet at the British Film Collectors Convention once. It still looked good. John.

2001 is one of the best 4K transfers Gary but it's not as good as some because not only is it an older 65mm production but the negative was apparently duplicated somehow years ago. I don't know this for sure, just what I was told. But the reality is the original negative would have suffered much damage because 70mm prints are struck from the original camera negative and not the safety copy via the internegative. It's pretty darned wonderful to have the film in this quality in the home though. John.

"2010" is a decent science-fiction movie, and the interpretation of "2001" that it runs with is a variant of Arthur C. Clarke's original vision of the story as stated in the first two novels. That said, I don't think we have to take this as the one true explanation for what was happening in "2001". It's just (a version of) *Clarke's* own interpretation-- and Clarke radically tweaked it a couple more times in the sequels (especially "3001"), and even stated in the introductions to the books that they don't take place in exactly the same continuity. Based on early interviews, Kubrick seems to have had *broadly* the same idea of what the story meant as Clarke did, but he also deliberately didn't want to spoon-feed it to the audience and wanted them to develop their own interpretations. It's as if he was deliberately embracing the Death of the Author thesis. So on that basis, I would regard some of the radically different fan interpretations of the story as perfectly legit.

But I'l always open to a different take on it as it is largely up to individual interpretation. Two great films as far as I'm concerned but the first one is the historic film of the two. John.

At the time 2010 was made very few of us had the ability to watch a film over and over again so hardly anyone was going to notice detail differences in the sets. I was astounded by the accuracy so we all need to bear in mind that the sequel was made before the home video age got going and no one ever expected we'd be collecting home movie videos en masse with the ability to study films in minute detail. Oh Man! This Is a great video! I have to say, while i don't think that 2010 Is as good as 2001 i've always thought That Is a very good movie, hell i even calle It my favorite movie that no one else seems to caré about. It's a flawed film for sure but at the same Time i appreciate that Is a well Made and intelligent science finction film on it's own which offers answers to questions that you might not want to know but also presenta More interesting ideas. It is like we sidestepped into another reality and we don't see how far that other reality might have developed in the same interval. I used to think it was the silhouette of The Post House hotel when driving along the M4 into London early in the morning. The sun behind that concrete block hotel made it look just like the monolith. But it's just a representation of God/The Creator/The Landlord and a tool to be able to make a space film like nothing before. It was a bit of a mess really but who cares when it looks like this? 2010 successfully brought it all together and managed to explain both the film and the book. John.

Love this channel btw . 2001 simply doesn’t have an explanation to its ending. Kubrick only suggests . It’s more about discussion, and leaving the viewer thinking about the future of man and technology and the possibility of alien contact . He isn’t reborn. The room is just a metaphor. It means nothing and isn’t a hotel . Symbolic of something meant to comfort the Astronaut. The light tunnel is just all symbolic and is just about travelling to another dimension, but the images are more experimental meaningless psycadelia than anything else. The whole movie is about the cycle of life, in symbolism , from ape, to man to higher level contact. There is no explanation or definition to the Monolith. It is just symbolic of the unknown, whether it’s God , aliens , or undiscovered science . It’s a movie, yet not a movie. Clarke thought Kubrick was the most intelligent person he’d ever met 😄and trusted him with interpretation of the book.

But 2010 The Year We Make Contact does make much sense of it all. A great sequel and I was so impressed with it at The Empire, Leicester Square that I went back to see it a second time. You have an interesting take on the material given that Arthur c Clarke was an atheist and the monolith represents alien life that interfered with human evolution so that we evolved at a faster rate. It is suggested that the monolith increased the intelect also. This is only half the story though as the star child represents our next stage of evolution beyond a physical form and the voyage through the Star Gate being a voyage of many millions of years. I did not find the 2010 entirely satisfying as I did not feel it followed the kubrick vision. The reason I love the original is that you can see it from a religious view as you do which is a very interesting take on it. I miss Roy schnieder. No actor has ever made me feel like he is me in the film. He's the best actor at playing the audience. Loved his work. Even in mediocre films like blue thunder, he made them memorable films with his performance

I don't see 2001 from a religious perspective but the analogy must have been intentional. The same story has been told many times but served up differently. There's usually a religious inference but it's up to each viewer how you want to perceive it. I'm not an atheist and I don't think many of us are if we fully understand the term which is confused with agnostic. If the monolith suddenly appears in my living room and convinces me it created life, the universe and everything then I'll no longer be agnostic! I love both these films. It helped seeing the 70mm print of 2010 at The Empire. Absolutely fabulous. The Super 8 isn't quite that good but it's been magical being able to see the film on a big screen all these years. John.

Ok I didn't see an answer there. 2010 is a great movie in my opinion, on par with Return of the Jedi and E.T. But it is very much an Arthur C. Clarke write. HAL explains away his previous murderous rampage by claiming that he was confused by mission control telling him to lie to the crew. And that never quite sat right with me. What exactly was he afraid of Dave and Frank (and the crew in hibernation) doing that would have jeopardized the mission? And why kill the crew in hibernation if they were also aware of the monolith? Visually, I can get behind 2010 a lot more than 2001. Those Voyager shots of Jupiter and Io are unreal, and unmatched since. The story is great but it doesn't explain what happened in 2001. The only way the movie 2001 makes sense, HAL murdering the crew and attempting to kill off Dave and Frank, is if HAL is not only aware of the monolith but also in competition with the human crew to reach it and travel through the (worm hole?) worm hole to make contact with the transcendental beings who created it. I think that's what Kubrick was going for in 2001.

I think that's a rather splendid interpretation Brian. I hope it will make me want to re-evaluate the original film again... in other words, a good excuse to watch it again! However, my 4K disc of it developed the 4K fault so I'll have to get another sometime. The Blu-ray is good but after seeing the 4K it doesn't seem to appeal. I do still have the Super 8 print though and my colleague from the BFCC still has his 35mm print so maybe I can borrow that. John.

I watched both films on Bluray about 2 months ago, back to back. I think 2010 undid some of 2001. The first film portrays HAL has a fallible mind that thinks it is infallible. The second blamed HAL's behavior to conflicting objectives of the government. I've also watched the analysis on the KZbin channel Collative Learning by Rob Ager. Highly recommended.

I nominally like _2010,_ so when you assert that this sequel of _2001:ASO_ explains it all, there is an essential problem, and it is _not_ because I dislike (or like) this movie. You mention personal study of the two films, so you must anticipate my observation: _2010_ is officially _not_ of the cinematic universe as _2001._ They are two different narrative conceits. Yes, I do agree that there is much about the one to contextualize the other, but Kubrick purposely disallowed A.C. Clarke from published his novel of the script, as well as purposely disallowing him from seeing any more of the movie than daily rushes before its official debut. Despite the novelization´s provenance as being authored by the co-author of _2001:ASO,_ the fact is -- and this has been stated explicitly by both parties -- _2010_ is a sequel to the _novel_ of _2001:ASO_ but not the movie. Because of this your assertion is invalid for the above reason; however, I will contribute an observation that isn´t a quote from me, but I have always remembered as a past filmmaker: _There are two types of filmgoers, as exemplified by_ 2001:ASO _and_ 2010:TYWMC. _The former work satisfies the viewers who desire to be awed and delighted by stylisms and metaphor, and the latter for those viewers who intrinsically rely on the comfort of an explicable narrative arc._ One would think there would be a crossover, and indeed there is -- but I haven´t seen it yet. Strangely enough, in my considerable experience, I see this over-generalization to be consistently true so far.

It's only a film Brian. 2010 works for me so sorry if I didn't make that point forcefully enough. Is it as good as 2001? No.

The book of 2001 is quite a bit more detailed. I’m just never sure of Dave’s role in all this? Messenger? God?

Messenger. Arthur C. Clarke wrote the book after the film - I think it was still in production or pre-production - so there was still a bit of working out going on at the time he set about the novel.

@@moviecollector5920 Ah. I had the impression they were released simultaneously. That it was a 50/50 collaboration with Clarke and Kubrick. Either way this film is eternally compelling. The other two books may well be unfilmable.
