The bone in that transition scene becomes an orbital nuclear weapons platform, maintaining the imagery of a weapon's arc through history and into space. The tribes are still at war over resources, even on the precipice of the next evolutionary leap forward. It's an interesting motif that's woven all the way through the film.

I first saw it on the initial release at the Cinerama dome in Hollywood in the wide format. I was the only science and science fiction geek in our group so no one else had any clue what they just saw and on the drive home I had to explain the plot. Some of them didn’t even get it that the apes were early humans. BTW, if you want the disc, all the previously released versions including DVDs, and Blu-Rays had defective color transfer and were too vivid and blue shifted. The 4K Ultra-HD version besides having superb resolution finally has the correct color balance.

Also there's some interesting observations people have made about 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some have pointed out the interesting fact that as the apes used bones (tools) as man progressed humans become so embraced with tools that they actually sit inside of their tools, hence the HAL ship actually resembling a giant bone in space. Humans became embedded into their tools.

My theory for David's last few minutes getting older was, that space-time has flipped there, like how it was suggested in one of the black hole thesis by physicists. So when he seen himself it was him being "going" to the older himself which aged him to the older himself. It's a very interesting movie that I've seen first time in TV as a child. The 2010 movie also helps to clear up some things from 2001.

been awhile since I read the book, but my understanding was he aged out of existence and was being turned into Data. and the monolith is a data probe that collects memories of civilizatations. So we can all live in the similation based on the collection that it has made across the universe. Designed to keep building itself to repeat the process so life can experience other biological life over long distances. might be my total fabrication based on one to two parts at the end of the book.

Introduction of LSD? Wouldn't be the first time hallucinogenics has pushed us forward as a species. The guy that figured out how to map human DNA said he never would have figured it out if he hadn't taken psychedelics. And that's just a crumb of what they've accomplished for humanity.
@SillyWillyTV Жыл бұрын
@@blytheguy7510 I wouldn't doubt that George A. Romero and Polanski dabbled in psychedelics. But Kubrick stated in Playboy Magazine "I believe that drugs are basically of more use to the audience than to the artist. I think that the illusion of oneness with the universe, and absorption with the significance of every object in your environment, and the pervasive aura of peace and contentment is not the ideal state for an artist." It's ironic cause while the critics walked out on the intro to 2001 the stoners stayed and ultimately influenced the advertising posters as "The Ultimate trip".

Wonderful. I thought I heard every film analysis on this film there was to hear, and you went and had perspectives and points I never thought of or heard yet. Fantastic. BTW, an additional detail on the transition you pointed out, the bone that went airborne was "a weapon", and the satellite was a nuclear missile launching platform... "a weapon". One of the big themes of the film is "is man the master of his tools or his tools the masters of man?" And man sure loves those tools that are weapons.

That’s the best summation of 2001 I’ve ever seen. I acknowledge and respect your need cred, Ms. XIX. It’s obvious you’ve a deep love for many of the stories (across all media) that you cover on your channel. 2001 really is one the best and most enduring films of all time. I think it blows away films like Interstellar. Denis Villeneuve and Stanley Kubrick are both amazing directors, in their own rights. Denis seems the type that is almost afraid of silence and pauses. He fills his films, I’m thinking particularly of Dune I and II at the moment, with sound. Music and effects are so prevalent in his Dune adaptation that they are themselves full-fledged characters. Stanley, however, is not afraid to use silence. He’ll draw it out just to unnerve you and drive home the freakiness. Stanley rattles the cage that is our reality and Denis makes the cage look beautiful. I wish more directors today would not be afraid to employ quiet, music with no dialogue scenes in their films. You get 25 minutes without a word (other than ape-speak) and your sucked in immediately. 2001 truly is a masterpiece. For several reasons. I count us fortunate that we were blessed with Arthur C. Muthafrackin’ Clarke and Stanley The King Kubrick coming together and working this story. Some of what makes the movie special comes directly from that relationship and interaction.

Interesting little detail about the video call with the daughter... the video's frame is following the girl around. You might see that and think, "What? The video call's camera has an operator? Is it a mechanical robot operator?" ... but from 2023... I look at that and think "That's Apple "Center Stage" feature in FaceTime." The camera is high resolution enough to be able to digitally crop in while still having decent enough picture quality, and it follows the subject with image based analysis just by moving the crop around. Apple JUST introduced this feature a couple years ago. Kubrick and co. predicted this back in 1966.

Thank you very much for giving one of the most heartfelt and upbeat reviews/walk-throughs of "2001" I've seen on KZbin! Loved every minute of it. The movie has been one of my favourites since I read first read the novel back in my teens and then watched the movie (sadly on VHS as it was not available in the cinema in Sweden back in the 1980s) My only gripe to this day with it is that the Earth looks so wrong. (That of course being because we hadn't yet managed to send something up in a high enough orbit to capture the complete shape of our planet) I know it's just a minor issue, but I'm pretty sure it bugged Kubrick as well when he saw the NASA photos of it later on... Oh, and, as described by Clarke, the Monolith totally absorbs light, so it would probably have looked bitchin' if Vantablack had been available at the time the movie was made! ;)

@MrDoctorMabuse3 ай бұрын
I don't think it's quite that simple. The monolith had been uncovered for some time. Perhaps it was more that when the party of astronauts approached it and tried to photograph it, it "perceived" this was the moment to send the signal as it would then be successfully tracked, it's next goal was to get Man to pursue it deeper into space to further evolve.
