I always thought HAL was the most human character in the film. His "crack-up" was more neurotic than psychotic. As for Dave he was entering into a terrifying but beautiful other dimension after the encounter with monolith. Which is the overture to his rebirth, Lovely tribute to Shelley at the close. Thanks!

Hey 👍 great comment as always . Thank you .

I don't think it's at all odd that Dave tries to rescue Frank; that's exactly why he's on "standby" already in his spacesuit. Dave does not know Frank is dead at this point or really what happened at all. Even if he did know Frank was dead, it's very "human" to try to retrieve the body. He also confirms with HAL that HAL has "a good track on him" so they're fairly sure they will find him. That's what the pinging radar in the pod is all about as Dave tracks down Frank in space. As for the communications, they're millions of miles from home and everything is just one-way. Frank and Dave have both been selected for this mission due to their mental hardiness and they've been together for months. They're just not the type for idle chit chat. And they would be on rotating shifts with just some overlap, so they're often alone like when Dave is sketching or Frank is playing chess, the other one is sleeping.

I hear what you're saying but I still think there's something weird 🤔about the astronauts being so blank a lot of the time and I will probably make a video about that subject one day .

@@kubricktheory237 It's too bad we don't get to "meet" the other 3 astronauts that HAL kills. If the mission went ahead as normal then the 3 would be revived and all 5 of them would be sitting around that dinner table. Would they all be staring at their tablets? That'd be pretty funny.

(though it's funny when you notice there isn't actually room for all 5 astronauts to sit around the table at once. There are 5 seats, but only leg room for 3)

Now i understand...Kubrick master mind was playing with all of us. With those miniatures and models. Metaphors of that cosmic psychosis, the sound and music was crucial for saying all this. i am very shocked and surprised. I knew that behind The Shining and Stanley's figure was part of the imagination of The Simpsons. Looking at the reptile I can't stop thinking about the sisters of Marjorie Jacqueline Simpson.

Thank you for making and posting, as always. I have thought that Dave going to retrieve the body of Frank was a 'macguffin ', just a plot device to add some drama in an otherwise slow movie. But it's also a false mission and there are a few of these in this movie. This is also reflected in Alien and Ridley Scott was very heavily influenced by Kubrick.

Hey Robert 👋interesting concept about a 'false mission ' and I agree there's some strange things going on . Glad to hear Ridley Scott liked Kubrick because I love Alien .

@@kubricktheory237 Ridley Scott's The Duelists was his response to Barry Lyndon and I think Alien is his take on Sci Fi as Kubrick's was with 2001. He of course used actual Kubrick footage from the Shining in Blade Runner as well as a cast member. I thought that the behaviour of HAL was caused by it's proximity to the monolith, rather than Jupiter. In a similar way it had affected mankind!
