Hi Derek, what a great find. Alpinas are unrestricted as opposed to regular BMWs, so you pay for 400 horses and can use it without speed limiter.

Back then BMW shipped bare shells of E39 540 to Alpina. BMW did cast the 4.6 but it was "hand made" at Alpina, and then the car itself was finished by Alpina. BMW did use this engine in X5 4.6is. Please do get your facts in ordnung!

BMW did not use this engine as the base for the 4.8 (N62b48)... not sure where you got that info. The 4.8 was a totally new gen engine, not touched by alpina; while the 4.6 was purely a result of cars such as the alpina being shot above. The 4.4 from the LCI e53 is actually the exact same motor as the 4.8, but with a smaller bore.

A sport model, badged 4.6is was released in 2002. The 4.6L V8 engine made 340 hp and was based on the M62TUB46 Alpina engine from the Alpina B10. The 4.6is was available in 4 colors (black, Imola red, blue, and silver). It featured 20 inch wheels that were fitted over larger brakes than the stock X5. It also had different front and rear bumper treatments. Alpina takes the 540i model and makes from it B10...that is why it has 2 VIN numbers...Alpina was a tuner for a BMW before but now they have a status as car producer...so there are no combination with chasis is done in BMW and then sent to Alpina or Alpina orders a other engine from BMW by their specification... Alpina orders complete 540i from BMW and then complete re-do it..engine..suspension..interior..exterior...all what customer wants. Alpina is a better version of BMW for people who has money..

Alpina is considered a manufacturer by the German gov't due to the percentage of the individual car that is modded/changed (kinda like Ruf) hence the 2nd vin number, "Limousine" is the German term for "sedan". The Alpina wheel is a timeless design, not gonna dog you for the E38/39 mixup, enuf interweb morons have already done that. Would be nice to know (for client) if it is Nicasil or Alusil block, High sulfur fuel reeks havoc on one of em, BMW had a massive recall in states to do engine swaps back in the day. Alpina also made manual shifts and it depends on which gen M5 you are discussing as to where they make the power, you are probably only referring to E50. Confused yet? If you stumble across any Hartge models at auction make a quick vid plz

This engine is the later cylinder liner I believe. They changed over during this year from what I read. It was only a problem in areas of terrible fuel... like the USA.. lol Speaking of Hartge, I reported an E30 H26 Hartge just yesterday. It was rough but could be saved.

The block metallurgy, whether Alusil or Nicasil, is not relevant for this era BMW; it didn't affect e39 cars.

The 4.6 engine is NOT exclusive to the alpina's. the 2003 BMW X5iS shared the identical engine.

Not 100% identical, Alpina used Mahle pistons. The BMW version was a mass produced unit.

Hi Derek, not sure if you meant that this particular Alpina only comes as an Automatic but of course not every Alpina is an Automatic. This one only comes with switchtronic which is the Alpina automatic but there are plenty of Alpinas with a manual gearbox. Depends on the model and engine size.
