I've owned this same guitar since 2001 and have never been able to recreate that tone. Don't get me wrong, the guitar sounds and plays great, but I just cannot match Toms sound in those albums. In my efforts to obtain that tone I read somewhere that Tom borrowed a guitar and amp from the studio that did the recording, so he never actually used the strat on the albums.
@DraftZJ
@DraftZJ 4 жыл бұрын
Snow Band I installed an invader in my Fender Duo Sonic HS (alder body and maple neck so essentially the same as this strat) and played through my neighbors Marshall JCM 800 and got the Enema sound pretty much identical. Just straight amp, no pedals. Dumpweed and All The Small Things in particular were soooooo good
@DraftZJ

now Box Car Racer on the other hand, I got close but you could tell he didn’t play that combo. I believe he recorded most of that album with the Invader in the red ES335 he had before he got his own gibson signature

I’m surprised he used an invader. Imo the invaders are perfect for metal, but they totally work for punk/pop punk. Easily one of the hottest pickups I’ve ever played, even through a totally clean amp they sound like there’s a light overdrive on them, like they require distortion to sound good and they sound really REALLY good with any kind of gain on them.

I have the Squier version in surf green, although I’ve made a few modifications to it. I’ve replaced the neck with a Mexican Fender Deluxe Series neck so it still has the big 70s headstock on it (I prefer 70s Strat headstocks to the smaller ones because of Tom’s guitar!) It’s not something I’d necessarily do now, but when I was younger I wanted the Fender logo on the headstock. Shallow, I know. I’ve also replaced the Duncan designed humbucker with a Seymour Duncan JB and put a tortoiseshell pickguard on it. I’ve kept all the original parts too, in case I wanted to return it to the stock spec but I don’t think I’d ever sell it. It has massive sentimental value and it looks and plays great, which is a minor miracle considering how long I’ve had it and how badly I abused it in my teens.

I really like simple guitars and they are getting harder and harder to find. One pickup and one volume knob, nothing confusing about it. Nothing to get in the way. The tonal shades come from you and your fingers. I have (for years now) been playing a couple of old 80's Yamaha SE150's, I purchased each for 75 bucks years ago, they are getting hard to find now too. I am always in search of a guitar that plays better than these two cheapies but so far I can't seem to find anything that stacks up.

Fun fact: If you try to build a custom shop guitar from Fender with one knob and one humbucker you still can’t do it due to contracts that are still in effect from Tom! Benji PC yep but those are partscasters from their artist relations guy. For Tom that was Alex Perez. He could literally throw together any guitar an artist wants. I mean more of the general public can’t have one made. Sorry for the confusion. Alex also made the jazzmasters for Steve Klein of NFG, Finch, and designed Jim Root’s guitars. I am sure there are many more.

And I’ll add the only reason I know all this is because I went down a rabbit hole of trying to get one made officially. Lol. I spoke to Alex about it as well.

I'd donate that thing to Hot Topics. What a clown guitar, hard to find, finger cheese, ha, bet the guy or gal you bought that off had a tribal tattoo and a tramp stamp.

Looks great I just got a 2001 standard hss strat that still had the stickers and pick guard protector on it. Made in Mexico but plays great.

I feel that pain. Got lucky recently and scored a near mint graffiti yellow in Melbourne. Paid overs but had been searching for years so I couldn’t let it go.

I sold my TD strat....5 years ago? It was just collecting dust and wasn't the most versatile guitar in my collection. What it did, it did extremely well, but it was never going to be a stage guitar, for me. I saw the video thumbnail and it took me back. No regrets about selling it, though. It went to someone who was REALLY excited about it.

One of the last dudes I would think liked Tom delonges style lol. Tom is the reason I realized I had always loved guitar and eventually picked up guitar , he’s underrated, literally one of the best songwriters in the past few decades. Every blink album got better up to their self titled album and if those first two angels and airwaves albums were made with blink then you’d have a massive improvement in songwriting and music that really no one has done Professionaly in rock in one band, but he was totally the biggest creative contributor in that band. Usually you hear guys be great always or mediocre always but blink rose up to really hit a high point and angels and airwaves was another super unique sound and had big scope. He always wrote awesome riffs. Iv always been more of a riff fan than a solo fan. Didn’t he have an actually Strat tho? From fender itself?

I have it in black, always wanted it in blue though. The previous owner unfortunately was a smoker and treated the guitar like crap, had to give it a really good cleaning. Other than that it was in great condition except the pickguard because it was stained to hell almost borderline brown. Got a replacement for it from warmoth.
