I know this is my second comment on the same video the first one was more of a tip. You made me laugh when you talked about forgetting to put oil in the filter. On one of the other automotive KZbin channels the host and the people watching started back and forth that went on forever. I would say it was a 50/50 split on putting oil in the filter before installing it. I've been doing my own oil changes on everything I own. That includes all my boats and motorcycles and yard equipment when filter is needed. I personally never put oil in the filter. I tried once and it made a mess of my driveway. What I normally do is pull a fuse and crank the engine while watching the oil gauge. Once I have pressure I put the fuse back in and start the car or truck or whatever I'm working on. That drain plug that you showed has been around as long as I have. I really didn't know they still need those. I think before my next oil change on my truck or expedition I might just go ahead and switch up. Also I thought you live in California. Almost any series of your videos and I watch probably most of them it always is raining. I thought you guys were in a drought. -) I always make sure to give you a big old thumbs up and of course I have been a subscriber for a long time. Looking forward to watch you more.

Start with your large drain pan under the drain with the neck on it open with the small pan under the neck if the big one won't hold it ,it will run out of the neck into the small pan. And FYI they make drain pans for diesel trucks that hold the large volume of oil that they hold.

I use one of those little blue kiddie pools from walmart. About a 4ft or 5ft diameter. Works great for catching coolant too. You can't miss. After that I just pour into old oil bottles, because I always use it on something. And if someone asks me to "borrow some oil" because their car is low, I give them the old used junky oil and they're super happy about it, knowing that it's old. :)

That filter seemed to spin off pretty freely if you ask me.....a bit too loose for my comfort. Along with the other tips already given, if you are considering a fumoto valve for your truck, consider the version with the nipple to connect a 3/8' hose. That makes it super easy, draining right into your transport container and no need to use the drain pan.

Here's a little tip that might help you in the future. You're bigger oil pan I have had one for over 40 years. About 10 years back the screw cap that you train the pan from broke in half. I was devastated when it happened I love that oil pan. Looking at it and looking at one of the courts of oil I tried that cap on there and it fit perfect. I like seeing you use motorcraft oil filters. Since almost every car I have ever owned has been ford's that's all I use. And I only use their spark plugs and air filter unless I upgrade it to a k&n. I don't really stick with the name brand stuff for other things. There are some pieces that Ford has gotten it right and aftermarket just doesn't cut it. A friend of mine is an amsoil dealer and he gets a discount on oil filters. Since most of his cars and mine use the same oil filters we normally split the cost on a case of them. It's highly unlikely he or I would sell any of our ford anytime soon. I enjoy watching your videos look forward to watching more.

This is old so you might already know this but the larger pan will hold all of the oil from the engine. Totally full, the pan is 13 quarts, the other 2 quarts is in the filter. I normally punch a hole in the filter and let it drain, then remove it and start draining the oil pan. I also cut the top of the oil catch pan out as it reduces the mess and I keep 5 gallon jerry cans around to put my used oil in and take to reclamation.

By the way, oil filters do have a "drain plug" -- It's called a screwdriver. Punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and walk away for a minute and let it drain out first. Also, when you are putting the new and clean filter back on, pull your oily glove off and use your bare hand, and you won't get it covered in oil.

That oil drain pan will hold all of the oil in your engine. I have one just like it. Yes That's what I do, punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter. You forgot to suck the oil out of the reservoir, it's on top next to the fuel filter housing. You have to remove the plastic cover to get to the reservoir. Remove the plug with an Allen wrench. Something they can be a bear to get out, essentially if it's never been removed. It has an o-ring on it. I made a new plug for mine with a 9/16" head, I got tired of fighting the allenhead. It holds around a half quart. I use a brake vacuum pump but you can use a syringe with a small hose, It just takes a little longer. Make sure you refill the reservoir before putting the plug back in otherwise the engine won't pick up oil to build injector pressure and it will be hard to start. I always fill it with one quart. Make sure you put the filter and oil pan plug in first. Then it will hold 15 full quart's. I hope this helps you.

FixItNick I’ve always just added all 15 to the intake. Never had an issue. I will probably do another change here soon. My last change I put seafoam into the crank case to help clean the oil side of the fuel system, I’ll probably add it again for a second course. I don’t bother adding seafoam to the fuel because I run power service diesel kleen in it year round and add it in just about every tank.

Heavy debate. Most people don’t think it’s necessary. I would only do it in tucks that pull heavy or you’re speeding in a lot. And even then only every couple of oil changes. Mostly if anything to put anti stiction additive right into the hpop to lube up those injectors and circulate it into the rest of the fresh oil from the top end rather than hope the additive gets in through the bottom end. people debate how much/ the rate of oil flow that draws into the hpop. In theory if it’s flowing right and circulating regularly the change in oil top end wise would be mostly unnecessary.
