I couldn't believe they lost the GF. I'm a Roosters fan but I was certain the Eels were going to win like halfway through the season. I guess it's a testament to Newcastle and shows how great a player Andrew Johns was.

The greatest injustice in Rugby League history that they didn’t win the premiership that year. I blame Smith, the coach. He did not prepare them for the Grand Final. He was a perennial Grand Final looser.

What a TEAM 💯 can't believe we lost the GF, got spooked, too confident maybe. Same calibre as the 09 side..

A bad case of stage fright & a ambush from newcastle. A dream season with a nightmare ending. I still can't bring myself to watch a replay of it, even after 22 years.

Shame that even though Melbourne were heaps over the Salary Cap and still couldn't match this season

Most overrated team in Rugby League history. No big surprise when they got hammered by Newcastle 24-0 in the first half of the 2001 Grand Final.
