You went over things exactly as I would John. I've been a tech for almost 40 years and you're a breath of fresh air. I have seen so many techs that have no clue what they're doing and throw expensive parts at cars hoping it will fix it. You're doing a great job!!

Thanks for this.... my shop replaced the whole assembly a few years back on my 2000 Echo. Hundreds of dollars. Also replaced gas cap w an aftermarket cap -- that's been OK. The car is pretty low miles for its age (180,000) but runs very well w some TLC (just replaced an injector and the MAF). Most of the time it gets in the very high 30s or even low 40s (on a long run) for mileage. I really appreciated your effort to save the customer $. Good on you!

You have so many positive comments from so many viewers that you help/have helped. The Echo is such a good car, if only other drivers would stop smashing into mine! I'd still me driving my 1st, but am now on my third, were it not for other drivers totaling my first two Echos. Thanks for your help in keeping them running. After watching your video, I checked my breather hose, and sure enough, I must have forgotten to reconnect it after previously checking an engine light issue. Now the codes are cleared again, and I'll soon be taking in my 2000 Echo for a SMOG check. Thank you.

Thank you, John, for the diagnosis and the repair guidance. I had this precise combination of codes on my 2000 Echo. After watching your video I tightened my gas cap, looked under the hood and found the breather hose was disconnected so I reconnected that, and then, for good measure, lay down on a piece of cardboard to check that little bit of hose back near the canister. That looked fine so hopefully my check engine light will go off shortly. The car had been running fine anyway but it's always a concern when that light comes on.

Good stuff sir, thank you. I recently got a 2001 Celica GTS recently (fun little car) and before long I got the dreaded check engine light. What codes came up? Wouldn't you know it - P0440, P0441 and P0446. And, sure enough, the gas cap isn't OEM. It's some cheap POS gas cap. After I fill up at the pump, it doesn't tighten right. That has to be the problem. I ordered the Toyota OEM gas gap, it's coming this week. And if, like in the video, it's more than one problem, at least I will have solved the most obvious one.

John-We did a smoke test on my 02 Echo today and smoke came out near gas cap. We replaced the cap with an OEM Toyota, and also noticed long section of vapor canister hose was loose and had dry rot. Replaced it with 5/8 heater hose. My mechanic wants to know why the Toyota Echo has 2 small holes at the top of the filler tube. One appears to lead to throttlebody and other to the air cleaner. Are these factory installed? Can they lead to the P0440?
@marshmower2 жыл бұрын
If there's an overfill, gas can probably rot those two lines. Which is common I'd think
@marshmower2 жыл бұрын
There's several lines. Maybe 2 small and 1 bigger line and of course the fill hose.
@9unslin9er2 жыл бұрын
@@marshmower I ultimately did fix the entire issue, but after pretty much replacing the entire system. Replaced the vapor canister, filler neck, and purge solenoid; but they weren't the culprit. One of the (2) hoses connected to the purge solenoid wasn't sealing properly, throwing a P0441 and P0446. Clamp/Zip tie tight. Most importantly, the Factory OEM Toyota/Lexus gas cap is a no go. Mine went bad after a year. Get a standard Duralast cap from Autozone, $10. They seal much better. Codes went off and stayed off.

+john sadler First, thank you. Where are you located? We're in Madison WI. How do we find a good mechanic! Turns out it wasn't the charcoal canister for our 2001 Toyota Echo. Code po420. Meineke mechanic said pipe was leaking at catalytic converter or converter needed to be replaced. Replaced and soldered piece of pipe, take from there. Engine light has not come back on. We are planning to buy new car after Christmas. If the converter ultimately needs replacing, we don't want to spend $900 to do so (trade will come in at $880 - 1000). Can we go a month without replacing without damaging engine? Avg 120 mi / wk. And thanks for your honest work here on KZbin.
@JohnSadlersAutoRepair9 жыл бұрын
+Michael O'Rourke Your welcome! You did a good job by fixing the leak first, the code means it's not as efficient as it should be. When you have an exhaust leak in the pipe it can set that code. You Will Not damage the engine by driving it with the light on. The only way you will damage the converter is if the light starts blinking and you continue to drive it. Hard to find a good mechanic, I'm in Spring Valley, Ca.. You can go to Alldata.com and I think they have a section to put a zip code in to find a shop. Then pick 2 of them and give them each a small job to do or just get a few estimates and see if they are close or way different. You can check them out on Google also, I always make sure the mechanic will look me in the eye, has a clean shop and shows me the old parts with a written parts and labor warranty. John

Midnight Ryder CHECKING MONITOR STATUS 1. Introduction The Monitor Status (Mode 06 data) allows the OBD scan tool to display the monitor result, test value and test limit (malfunction criterion). A problem in the emission-related components such as the catalyst, EVAP and thermostat can be found by comparing the test value and test limit. The monitor status information is included under Decoding Mode 06 Data. The ECM (PCM) monitors the emission-related components. After the monitor, the ECM stores the monitor results and test values. The monitor result indicates whether the component is functioning normally or not (PASS or FAIL). The test value is the value that was used to determine the monitor result. When the test value is inside the test limit, the ECM determines the component is functioning normally (PASS). If the test value is outside the test limit, the ECM determines the component is malfunctioning (FAIL). So next hook up the scanner and go to Mode 6, you will find one or more failures. There will be some number like Tid and Comp id, write down the failures and I will Decode it for you. John
