He he he he he! You've got a happy friend here! I've got my check engine light for quite a while. Got code reading at Autozone this morning and boom, 7 codes! 3 of my codes were P0440, P0441, P0446. Went to check my 02 Highlander after watching your video and what? The exact very same hose was disconnected at the bottom! I put it back as you said, disconnected one side of the battery for 10 minutes to reset the check engine light and then reconnected battery. At this time, no more check engine light! Thank you sooooo verrrry mucccchhhh! Now I am waiting to see how to fix the other codes (P1346, P0335, P0340, P1350) if ever they come back. And I still have the VSC light on. Anyway, at least one headache ($$$$$) is gone! God bless you for sharing this!

This happened to our '03 Highlander three times...the first was at the dealer, the second at an Oil 'n Go and the latest at the same dealer. The first two times, reconnecting the hose to the air filter box as you've demonstrated solved the problem. This latest issue, I reconnected the hose, but the check engine light did not go off. The mechanic at a trusted repair shop told me the codes had to be reset, which he did, but after a few days, the light came on again! I'm now informed that the Purge VSV needs replacing. The dealer wants $167 to do the job, but I see the VSV part on ebay for as little as $47...and I may be able to replace it myself if it's what you've identified as the purge valve in your video. I'll also check with my local autozone as mentioned in another youtube video. Thanks for your demonstration...it's spot on!

THANKS for the tip. Changed my air filter 3 months ago on my 2003 Highlander and just started seeing the Check Engine Light today. OBD-II code reader said trouble at P0441, 442, 446. I'm puzzled why the light wouldn't have come on sooner. I looked today for the disconnected hose and BINGO, there it was. Reconnected the hose and now waiting to see what happens. You have a new subscriber. Thanks again.

A big THANK YOU to the author. This is the best video that shows me where is the vacuum hose (tracking down from VSV = Vacuum Switch Valve). I watched at least 10 videos before this and none guided me to the vacuum hose. Yes, last month I changed the air filter in my RX300 and then BAM! (just like you said), I got the check engine light on. I followed other videos to change: gas cap (easiest & lowest cost $11 at Pep Boys) to the whole evap system (near the gas tank for $360 bought thru Amazon). After each fix. I used my OBD II to clear the car computer and turn the check engine light off. However, twice check engine light turned back on after every 100 miles. Finally, I was lucky to come across your video and found my vacuum hose was loose. I think this 3rd fix will cure the problem for good. Note: My car is RX300 not Highlander (but all-in-all are in the same Toyota corp's design) but your verbal instruction is so clear + the video guided each step so I found the vac hose with no problem.

Sure ennough, had oil change 1 week ago and guy tried to sell me air filter based on my dirty one he pulled. Thanks for sharing, I also had the same PO441 code after checking the filter. I just took a look, and low and behold that hose was not connected. I just reconnected it and we'll see if it fixes it the code. I have a smog upcoming, and from what I've read it could either be a hose, gas cap, or other type of leak that would be somewhat costly to diagnose & repair. Worse if it is in fact the canister they are talking about a $600-1K fix. Let's hope it was just the hose :)
@WorseThanChiggers9 жыл бұрын
Gustav Petruske III Like you, when I researched my P0441 code, I also read lots of potentially scary and costly causes. Remember that a code doesn't tell you want's wrong. It just tells you what the effect is of what's actually wrong. So, you or your mechanic will need to go through the proper diagnostic procedures to determine what the actual cause is for the codes that you're seeing. There are quite a few things that can cause the above codes. So, nobody can tell you for sure without performing systematical diagnostics. I wish I had a crystal ball that would do that.

I suggest finding a qualified mechanic who will first diagnose the problem and determine which component is at fault rather than throwing expensive parts and labor at it in hopes that it might solve the problem. A qualified technician who knows how to observe and interpret the live data stream from the computer would more likely resolve the issue successfully. Matt has a great channel here that uses this scientific philosophy. Too bad so many pros don't observe it. kzbin.info

Another occaisional fix is to screw your GAS CAP on super tight. Code still doesn't go away? Buy a brand new knock-off gas cap, $10. Still didn't go away? Get an good OEM one from a junkyard for $1, really making sure the GASKET is good. Still didn't go away? Get the Toyota one from the $tealership for $32. STILL didn't go away? Order a gas tank vapor pressure VSV solenoid for YOUR car, a knock-off one from China, $55 and three weeks of shipping. It's pretty cramped installing it down by the gas tank, though, so you'll need a super bright flashlight and jackstands. The dealership would have charged you $500 for that, though.

@WorseThanChiggers7 жыл бұрын
What you describe as a rumble could mean many things. Your car's check engine light is telling you that something is wrong and it might be an easy DIY fix or could be something requiring professional help. The next step is connect an OBD2 code reader to the data port under the dashboard to read the trouble codes that are now stored in the car's computer. Only then will you know which components may be affected and where to begin diagnostic testing of those components.

@WorseThanChiggers7 жыл бұрын
That combination of codes likely indicates a major vacuum leak. Was there some recent work done on the car that could give you a clue? Trace all the vacuum hoses and see if one has come loose. They can get old and split, too. Listening for a hissing noise might also lead you in the right direction. It could also be hidden problem like a ruptured brake booster diaphragm or, worse yet, an intake gasket leak.

A Prius is a totally different animal but it does have a small gasoline engine. So, it should have vacuum lines and the principles should be the same.

I bought a scanner and checked it. It was P0401 on the code. I deleted it and the light went off. Got it at pep boys for $25. I hope it will pass the smog check since the light is off.

It will most likely fail the smog test right now and I will explain why. Right after clearing the codes with a scanner/code reader, you must put the car through several drive cycles. The number, type, and duration of drives cycles will vary and is hard to predict but plan on at least 3 of some distance over the course of several days just to be sure. The computer needs time to see enough sensor data to reset the readiness monitors in case it needs to throw codes and turn on the check engine light. If you go too soon to get your smog test, the testing station will see that not all of the readiness monitors have had time to reset and you will be turned away. Just understand that deleting the codes with a scanner does not eliminate the fault that caused the check engine light to come on in the first place. Your P0401 indicates that you have a malfunction with the EGR system which you will need to have remedied first.

worsethanchiggers Thank you so much. I will do my smog next week. I might add some cleaning additives on the tank as well. Hopefully it will pass.

Shut the front door. I'm willing to bet this is the issue with my 2004 Ford Escape.

Opening the front door can trigger a trouble code? WTF?

Shut the front door means "no way!!!" or "really!!!!!" its a figure of speech in this case. LOL

you did not show the engine ck Lt. after fixing.
@WorseThanChiggers8 жыл бұрын
That's because the fault was eliminated by reconnecting the vacuum line. I noted in the video that you can reset the check engine light with your code reader or just wait for it to go off on its own after a few drive cycles.

OH! Did you notice he put the filter back in UPSIDE DOWN?
@WorseThanChiggers9 жыл бұрын
Wow and thanks! You're very observant. I didn't catch that subtlety in my final edits to the scene. If you look closely, there are 2 cuts between removing the filter and reinstalling it which is when I discovered the error in my ways. I cut out the bit where I flipped it back over. The pursuit of perfection never ends.

This is exactly what happened with my car, the same car as in the video, and with the same codes, but the check engine light has not gone out on its own, and still on.
@WorseThanChiggers8 жыл бұрын
+Олeжек If you do not have a code reader to clear the codes and turn off the light, you can just wait a few days and it should turn off on its own after several drive cycles. Or, just disconnect the battery cable for 15 minutes.

They couldn't clear the codes at the parts store, so I figured driving might clear the codes. I've driven the car several times by now, but not sure if the cycles were registered by the car computer as complete hot and cold cycles. Several times could mean 3, 4, 5 times or more?
@WorseThanChiggers8 жыл бұрын
3-5 times of driving varying distances should have been enough to turn off the light. Of course, that assumes that you have resolved all of the reasons for the light coming on in the first place and there aren't any other issues throwing codes. If the light is still on, you'll need to read the codes again to see what else needs to be addressed.

Finally went out after about 3-5 times. That clamp on the hose needed a replacement. Thanks a lot!
