Sarah Hughes was a very mature 15 year old. Michelle's marks were almost criminal. How anyone could have put her below 5.9 on the second mark is inexplicable. Whatever marks Irina deserved on technical merit (and her 3lo in combo was a clear downgrade, as Peter Carruthers noted), her presentation is just not as good as Michelle's. She almost frantic at times and there is no refinement. I thought 5.7 would be generous, but many judges gave her 5.8. Thankfully, it wasn't enough because Michelle was the clear winner here.

This is my theory: I think the Kwan's camp (mainly her father Danny) believed that the gold medal at SLC was a lock for her due to the following facts: 1. She headed into the game as a 2000 and 2001 World Champion and 2. Michelle would get the "home game advantage" at SLC. Since the gold medal was thought more or less secured for Michell, being able to win The Olympic without a coach would have pushed per popularity and marketability into the stratosphere and immediately established her legendary status. I've never believed that it was Michelle's decision to drop Frank; She had the deer-in-the-headlight look whenever she took the ice throughout the 01-02 season. If the decision to be coach-less was really Michell's then she would've shown more confidence throughout that season. So I really think it was Danny Kwan that made her drop Frank, because he saw the fame and money that it would have brought to the family. Of course the whole plan unfortunately back-fired at SLC.
@L1623VP2 жыл бұрын
@@AT-jm4dl If that's true, then sadly, Michelle wouldn't be the first figure skater with controlling parent(s). Danny probably did play a big role in the decision to leave Frank because it was so nonsensical. Michelle ended up giving a BS ambiguous answer to the press in order to protect her dad and keep peace at home. How terrible to put her in that position. Actually, had Michelle won the Olympics, she wouldn't have gotten any more money, fame or fortune without Frank there as with him, so why not just keep him on? Convincing Michelle to fire the coach she'd been with since she was probably ten-years-old just months before the Olympics wrecked her sense of consistency and support, which is crucial for an athlete at that level.

@Parker5285 жыл бұрын
its not called cheating, is it? I think its referred to as national bias.
@Parker5285 жыл бұрын
also, one more thing that happened here in this event with one judge who was giving low scores by him/herself several tenths below the rest, keep in mind that this is a "subjective" sport (personal opinion/viewpoint of each judge). So if just one judge in particular is for some reason giving scores in the 5.3/5.4 range, and all other judges are giving 5.7-5.8, as long as that one judge giving those lower scores is doing so consistently and without any indication of national bias or possible conspiracy with a judge from another country on the same panel to agree privately to each boost the other judges skater, and especially when without reasonable logic for a such a higher score, and at the judges meeting the next morning like they always do after these competitions, if asked by the head judge to explain a logical rationale for what he/she saw in coming up with those deductions when giving those much lower marks, and its deemed not for lack of incompetency, or national bias, then it is accepted and NOT only not seen as national bias but despite your use of a word like cheating when it comes to scoring/judging, is in fact not at all a cheating judge. Maybe this will help: think of the judges as a teacher. some school teachers judge, mark off, nitpick, etc harder or harsher than other teachers also in the same grade, subject and textbook for the year. That teacher who is lenient is not a cheating judge, nor is the teacher who is harsher, perhaps expecting more from his/her students. Its the student who would get caught cheating on an exam, just like it might be viewed by a judge as a lady doing an incorrect lutz jump, called a flutz, because at the last minute instead of using the toe pick for getting up in the air the skate is entered as if a flip jump- hence the term a flutz. A flutz is cheating; the judge noticing that incorrect form and scoring down for it IS NOT SEEN AS CHEATING. i hope this settles for you that the use of the word cheat is misplaced or misused or not a correct reflection the actions of the judges.

@@Parker528 If a judge gives their own skater a higher score than they deserve and low ball's a different Country that is the DEFINITION of cheating.
@Parker5284 жыл бұрын
@@gymstyle5091 But in terms of the figure skating world and coaching and whether it's in sports jargon or journalistic jargon yes of course in fact it's called cheating. However I don't know unless you can prove it to me with specific lines written as codified in the ISU code of rules that they actually in fact use the word cheating. Yes of course it is not playing a fair game. But in this term in this situation because of the fact that it's a judge from one country specifically favoring a skater from that judge's national skating federation, unless you can prove me wrong that is what is referred to as judging national bias. And I'll have to then go back and discuss this with an ex-boyfriend of mine who happens to have skated I'm on the junior national level and is now a very well accomplished pairs and singles coach on the national and international stage. Cheating is something when I think of I don't care who the person is It doesn't matter whether they're from my country I'm going to do whatever I have to do to make it so that they win even if they don't win fair and square. They have no connection to me. There's no obvious outward blatant appearance of one judge specifically going out of his or her own way to give favoritism, sometimes also called national bias to booster up a person's vote or score. cheating is a much broader definition. You can cheat on tests you take in a classroom. You cheat on your wife. It has nothing to do with national bias. Or whether or not you have some sort of favoritism of one person over the other. See cheating has many different elements that go into it. National bias is a subgroup underneath which the whole umbrella of cheating falls under. And in this case and in this sport it's called judges having national bias. Cheating would be on the skater in the case of let's say a flutz jump instead of an actual lutz jump, and trying to get away with it without being caught. That's called cheating and this sport. National bias is what is used on behalf of the judges. The skater doing a flutz and competition isn't doing something based on national bias They themselves are actively choosing to try to get points for a jump they can't quite do and that is called cheating It's not called national bias right because anyone from any country could try to do a flex and it has nothing to do with because of the fact that they're representing a certain nation...

Agreed as far as jumps but she rarely played it safe with choreography and program composition. She stuck to “safer” jump passes because they were literally safer physically. This was the secret to her longevity in the sport and overall success. She was aware of what her body can execute efficiently with precision and grace. Even her triple toe-triple toe caused problems (stress fracture in ‘97). I also don’t see how technique refers to jumps only. Choreography, transitions, and maintaining proper posture is very technical and physically demanding. Very rare is it to see a skater consistently delivering both difficult jump combos and a well composed program with choreography - both require stamina and great physical ability. Even the ideal body of Yuna Kim needed a break to last 2 Olympic cycles.. her body was saying nope.

Kwan should have been no better than 3rd in the short behind Nikodinov's spectacular skate with her two footed combo anyway which the judges either missed or completely ignored, which would have meant Irina only needed 2nd in the long to win anyway.

Maybe technically Irina's program was so far to superior to herself. She did it with fell and without perfect.

Irina completing 6 triples? No, it was 7 woman. 2 triple-triple combinations. A much more difficult program than Kwan’s. Michelle was always overrated but what happened here was a punch in the face. Suddenly with the new system judges starting noticing all Kwan’s weaknesses and she started getting marks her programs really deserved. And she retired lol. It’s Slutskaya who clearly won those championships.

Seriously ? Michelle kwan skated perfect with emotion, passion and elegant. Slutskaya skated like a truck driver. 🤭🤭🤭

Michelle did every element correct and clean. Slutskaya...... rushed jumps.

If Michelle kwan was not American and the final silver medalist was American she would have won two or three titles less than she actually did.
