Just going over the basic layout of the 5 cylinder 2.7L Diesel engine. This is the kind of video that would have helped me better understand the engine compartment when I purchased the Sprinter Van and the first year or so I owned it.
Pointing out where all the components are so you know where to look if you are having issues with your Sprinter Van. I hope you enjoy this 2002-2004 Sprinter Engine Basics video.
Check out Get Busy Building (this KZbin channel) for more diy sprinter van build videos as well as a bunch of other fun projects that will be posted!

This was a great run-down on the location of everything under the hood. I recently purchased a worn out '05 van with hopes of turning it into an "adventure/camping van" for the family on a very limited budget. I've done a lot of research, but learned 75% more, in the last 15 minutes, sitting in front of the computer, watching your video vs. climbing around under the van to figure out where everything is located, and how everything is interconnected. Great video! Thank you!

Might want to Add: Just forward of the air filter is the Mass Air Flow Sensor. On my 2006 3500 5-cylinder Turbo Diesel, this thing has gotten fouled several times in the 6 yrs I've had it. Vehicle will suddenly go into Granny Mode/Limp Mode. Can't go over about 40 mph. Learning to clean this thing will save any owner a lot of frustration & $$$. I always carry a can of Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner. The only other equipment you need is (as I recall) a 10 mm socket. You have to remove the metal heat shield, but it's seriously not rocket science. I've both replaced the sensor & cleaned it a few times. Takes less than half an hour. There are more than one good KZbin video on the step-by-step. The most important thing is not to stick anything inside the MAFS housing. If you touch the sensor itself, you'll be buying a new one. Mine was simply shot when I bought it. If you have a Blue Driver, the code is P0101

Thanks! I"m new to T1Ns and went to look at one yesterday this would have helped IMMENSELY to have watched first. On thing I learned after looking at that 2006 and doing some research is that some vans came factory with a roof AC unit which had a secondary AC compressor at the bottom drivers side (front) of the engine below the cab ac compressor. I was SUPER confused because on the model I was looking at, the belt had been removed when a previous owner replaced the roof ac with an aftermarket unit. So I was looking under the engine and scratching my head as to why the compressor was disconnected. That combined with not knowing how to use the AC controls (who designed that cab interface? A monkey?) led me to assume the AC system was shot. Great overview.
@GetBusyBuilding

I really appreciate your comment. You taught me something new, exactly why I love KZbin. I didn’t know about the passenger vans having the separate compressor, very interesting! Hope your search for a van goes well. They are getting older and cheaper. I’ve been keeping my eyes open for another Van also. Best of luck!

Perhaps worth pointing out the location of the serpentine belt tensioner pulley (between and left of power steering and A/C in this video). It's has a moulded in fitting (Torx on mine, apparently 3/8 on some others?) to fit a lever in to it, to get tension off the serpentine belt so you can remove it. Easy enough with the radiators swung out the way, trickier with all that still in place, particularly if you don't know where it is.

Please show where the MassAirFlow sensor is and the glow plugs and the glowplug module which is under the battery. This vehicle is not a 04-06 cause my baby is that age. I just replaced the median bearing on the two piece drive shaft with a redesigned bracket (MB part) that shifts the median bearing and drive shaft over to the passenger side for extending the life of the drive shaft components and life of the median bearing. Also the hand brake yoke under the van needs some oiling now and then. Wheel bearings need about 1/4 turn off from full tight when setting the tension after relube or replacement. The water in the overflow for the radiator should be filled to about 1/2" above the coils. Thanks for the vid BB.

Thanks for putting this orientation of major engine components of the l5. I'm a DIYer too. Had to quickly get acquainted with this engine after going into limp mode and had to replace the resonator. Just one thing, you say the fan clutch is easy to replace. I did not find that to be the case when mine failed. Ended up removing the radiator to get to it and bolts that hold it on. I'd be interested if you knew another way. While I was there I also replaced the serpentine belt tensioner, water pump and idler pulleys.

Glad you got the problem solved, I’m still surprised that there are resonators out there going bad. It was pretty much just a stock issue and I would assume no stock resonators are left 🤔. Sorry to hear that on the fan clutch. I was able to replace mine from the top, barely enough room to squeeze in there once you remove the shroud and loosen a few things up. You can slide the old one out and with a little yoga move or two get the new one in. My forearms felt it after.... but it can be done. Cheers -Bjorn

Universal Sprinter problem with ground wire. ( 1 click not start) 2006 / 2.7 If your driving down the road and lose engine power check your power window of wipers if no power. And you get pulled over place hand on ground post of battery if hot as HELL . This is a bad motor grounding wire. (motor to frame) It took may month to find this problem. TAG Truck Center never could. Van would have to set 1-2 hours then it start. I turning the key to start only one click start never engaged. Adding a ground wire to battery fix this problem. $14.00 . If you have this problem and you have a jumper cable you can restart by making the ground post to engine . Ground the starter so it will turn the motor. I stop started other DOA Sprinter on the road like this. jumping battery to battery will not work if 2 vehicle's the main jumper from there battery to doa VAN pos (+) post OTHER to neg (-) on the motor casing.

hey Tony m and my friend just got a 2004 and yes the previous owner had the same issues you mention and the ground between the motor and frame looked totally birdcaged and very ugly .Im not sure if it was supposed to be encased with a insulated coating because it was just bare strands of copper not even tightly wound plus when those vans are in the rain i noticed water pooling at the top corners of the hood opening causing very bad rust to form in the bottom corners of the hood opening.anyways we got it for $200 d0llars although lots of body rust it runs quite good still at 470 kms but once again that was a dood notice for all and it was on of the first things i noticd that can be a problem and YES if your hard crank slow crank is due to bad connections in any vehicle try to feel the connections that get warm as thats where your issue lies from the higher resistance that loose or dirty connections will produce.

If it’s the overflow hose it would just dump out next to the expansion tank. That’s odd that it keeps overflowing. I don’t fully know what to look for in that case but I’d consider doing a complete coolant flush or replacing the cap. Let me know if you end up finding a solution.

If I think it’s what you’re talking about then it is just the connector to the Espar D5 heater… it may just mean that yours doesn’t function. It is only there for cab heat when the engine is not running and it comes standard in the delivery/utility sprinters (I.e. not passenger sprinters). Hopefully that is it and maybe that helps. I would google Espar D5 and if it looks like the connection than that’s all it is.

Also the front auxiliary fan is pulling air through the radiator. Someone has put a mannual switch on mine. Looks to me if you're going down the road, that fan doesn't need to be running because it is pulling through the radiators. It is off set away from the main fan. I see that as some dodge bull shit. But it needs to run when idling while sitting still. Especially in this 90° weather we are experiencing at this time. Just saying

One of the best, informative video on Sprinter. I have 2005 Sprinter (Winnebago) and this vid made me familiar with the engine. I have one defect in my transmission. I replaced my transmission two years ago in indianapolis and last year my gear lever stick will change by itself from higher to lower gear and have to push the lever to wards passenger side. Most of the time Gears will shift properly and works fine but suddenly it will change and i have to keep an eye on gear display in the dash all the time. Any suggestion ??

That is a weird one! Way over my head though, hopefully you find an answer. Personally I would think it’s an issue with your shifter and not your transmission but I honestly don’t know

My 2006 sometimes won't shift up out of 2nd geer? I have to pull over, shut off and restart. They want $1,400 to replace the trans speed sensor. I'm retired 15 years and to cheep to get it done yet.

Good video. I might be picking one up, I’ll definitely delete the fan clutch and do a ford taurus electric puller fan, fan controller, and block off the egr. What is the point of a turbo resonator? Can it be deleted?

It's now May of 2024, and Just came across this video. A quick call to the Mercedes Benz dealer down in Oregon, and they told me parts are getting extremely difficult to find and unless you're an established customer they won't even touch a vehicle that's over 10 years old. If you're out in the middle of nowhere or in a small town, you are pretty much on your own. I doubt you're gonna find anybody to work on these. In my home state here in Alaska there's only two vendors that work on foreign vehicles and neither one of them will work on this vehicle. There is a vendor online by the name of million miles sprinter, and he appears to sell parts and of course there is Florida Van Man. It does seem like there is a bit of a cult following for these and as long as you're willing to work on them yourself I guess you could get by. I was looking at an airstream conversion one myself, and typically these are 40 grand or more. That's when I start checking into having them serviced. It's so unfortunate as they are a great size van, get good mileage and don't have all the emission crap of the newer sprinters. Again, just be aware that if you buy one you'll probably be fixing it yourself, unless you're close to a very large city. By comparison I have a 2006 Chevy Express van and I can pretty much stop in any gas station in America and have that thing serviced. Certainly something to consider if you plan on a van life style of living.

Very valuable comment for prospective t1n purchasers. Alaska, in particular, you’d have to be a little picky about your vehicle of choice!

Excellent video, especially for someone about to purchase a 2006 View. How much of a mechanical review of your View did you have done by others prior to buying your van? For example, did you have a bodyshop review the body, and an MB shop take a look at the engine? Or did you just look over the unit yourself, test-drive it, Carfax it, and read whatever records came from the prior owner?

Great vid! Just bought a 2006 Sprinter and cannot figure out all the dash controls (all symbols) and if the LIGHTS are supposed to be on all the time? Could you make a vid and explain the DASH CONTROLS and how they all work? Thanks!

@@GetBusyBuilding No, I'm talking about ALL the controls on the control panel which includes the HVAC controls, locks, fans, lights, etc. And I also want to know if the HEAD LIGHTS are supposed to be on all the time because mine are and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn them "OFF". Thanks!

I just bought a 2005 2500 diesel sprinter freightliner, I'm in the process of converting it to an RV..my question is, should I worry about not finding a auto shop on my travels across the USA that would fix my van if needed...
@GetBusyBuilding
@GetBusyBuilding 2 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the van! I’m stoked for you. If it were me I wouldn’t be too worried about finding a network of shops. I would learn what you can about the engine so if something comes up you know whether you can fix it or if you need a mechanic; if something comes up you’ll have to use the forums or whatever else to find a mechanic. Most things you can be done fairly easily on your own though. You’ll find what’s best for you in no time at all!

Another question...is there a list of spare parts one should have stored in the van, ie serpentine belt a etc...
@GetBusyBuilding
@GetBusyBuilding 2 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. I hope others leave comments here for that. My biggest go to is the OBDII reader… it helps trouble shoot anything. Next might be duct tape…. You can temporarily repair a lot of hoses that way to limp wherever you have to. Beyond that I’m not sure what else I would carry constantly on the road with me. The more the merrier, but space is always limited. It may vary on a vehicle by vehicle basis as you gain background with your sprinters own quirks

Hello, a good video. I have a 316 cdi sprinter 2003 model and wonder where I can find the engine management? My turbo isn`t working and a friend connected a computer and he said that he got no connection with the engine management (or engine steering) I am not sure if the English word is correct, but it is the unit who give signal to the engine and also the turbo. I try to avoid the Mercedes workshop as long as I can because they are so expensive here in Norway (around 200 US Dollar for one hour (45 min) Hope you can answer me at this question. All the best and take care. Greetings from Norway.

Hello, another Bjorn (that is my name as well). I am not certain, I would check the ecu which I would expect to be near the driver side firewall, also check fuses in engine and below steering wheel (in steering column). Perhaps searching for Sprinter ECU (computer) will yield good results for you. Best of luck!
