Subscribed! Thank you for the great review - I enjoy my 2002 targa for many of the same reasons you do and have decided to keep it long-term. A quality, usable classic I can work on myself. Truly a unicorn 911, the 996 targa was strictly 2-wheel drive. All 997 targas were 4-wheel drive. Cheers,

Had a look at the targa when considering a 996 - love the targa glass feature which really makes the car extremely practical and special. Decided against it because of the additional bracing and weight to support the glass mechanism. Also the guide rails and motor do fail after a while. Lovely car though hope you enjoy!

Yep, the targa mechanism adds some weight and complexity. About equal to the cabrio in that regard. The upside is that the targa adds practicality, whereas the cabrio just adds canvas! ;-) My 2002 targa is fully functional, after 21 years. The seals and sealing materials are still supple and pliant. Guide rails look virtually untouched if you ignore the residue from the crappy spray-on 'white grease' some dorkus used in the past.

Does the targa mechanism creak at all when driving?

It certainly can! I lubricated the rubber seals and gaskets with Krytox GPL205, which cured the squeaks. It's expensive but a little bit goes a very long way.
