John Berger 2002 was a turning point in the CART/IRL war; most of the prominent drivers, teams, and races were still part of CART, but the IRL had the exclusive contract with ABC/ESPN, some of CART's most prominent stars (Helio, de Ferran, Al Jr), Penske, and the races at Gateway, Homestead, Michigan, Nazareth, and Phoenix, along with the Indy 500. In 2003 the momentum had clearly swung to the IRL. Also, in 2002, Ridley, Herta, and Moreno had no ride.
