We are pitting this 2024 Subaru BRZ TS (sister car to the Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition) with 6-speed manual 4-cylinder 2.4L making 228hp Boxer engine against that 2002 Pontiac Firebird Firehawk with 6-speed manual 5.7L LS1 V8 making 345hp across multiple categories including REAL WORLD 0-60 Times!
The BRZ has 1/2 the cylinders but is 22 years newer with a modern interior. Can it keep up with the aging Firebird equipped with an LS1 V8, T56 manual transmission, and T-Tops!?!
Out BEST 0-60 Times from us on an unprepped roadway near sea level:

Yes they did. It’s gorgeous. I had a 2002 Camaro SS heavily modified, and I always wished that I had put the work into a Firebird body style. At that time, the fire birds were a lot more expensive and you could find the fourth Camaros for good deals, so that’s what I went with.... well definitely debated later whether I should have spent that extra money

Overall, what I am getting from this is. The Firebird is felt to be prettier and is quicker in a Straightline due its V8 power. It sounds better as well which is no surprise. Also, they stress the Firebird is cheaper. It also has a larger interior. These are all valid points. As a counter point. In today's market had the Firebird continued to be produced I'm certain based on prices of V8 Camaro's, it would be more expensive than the BRZ. The handling of a 20 plus year old Firebird is not in the same league as the BRZ. However, if the Firebird was being produced today it would most likely been based on the Camaro bringing the handling up to par. Making a direct comparison. The BRZ has a better gearbox, has better handling is not that much slower to 60 even though it is not a 0-60 car. On a race track the BRZ might do better due to its handling stock for stock. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally like a compact sportscar. To me the Firebird (which looks better without the Firehawk snorkels) has too much overhang front and rear.

Pretty interesting to hear others are comparing modern Japanese to 4th gen f-bodies...I was comparing the 4th gen to the JDM 90s vehicles (300zx, Supra, 3000GT, RX7) in my video in my 99 Trans Am/01 Formula, people lost their minds! At the end of the day, we're all car guys. We do cross shop these things! A square wheel/tire setup with a good 200tw tire on a 4th gen handles pretty damn good. Plus it hooks up with any launch technique. The panhard bar rear and double wishbone front is just flat out fun and you can fit 315s on all 4 corners. 98-02 F Bodies have been the best value for performance since new. They are rapidly increasing in value though. I like the firehawk look the best but as you mentioned, none of the "special" slp parts did much. The 01-02s run harder with truck cam and LS6 intake. I say find the least beat up one and buy it. Personally, I hate the WS6 hood anyways. Even if I bought a WS6, I'd sell some other sucker the hood for 3k. They built nearly equal WS6 to non WS6 T/As. All the Camaros are ugly and have far worse seats and interior design overall. But they are lighter and cheaper! Glad to see someone else still supporting and using a 4th gen, subscribing now! I have too many cars but I post my F Bodies pretty regularly

The Firehawk package could be optioned to any of the 3 trims offered with Pontiac's 4th gen Fbody: the Firebird, Formula or T/A. And the quad scoop hood did not come on all T/A's only those with the WS6 option and all Firehawks had Ram Air even without the quad scoop WS6 hood.
@michaelthompson4178
@michaelthompson4178 11 күн бұрын
Almost right, the Firebird was the V6 3800 car, so you couldn't get that in a Firehawk. Basically that package was the Formula Firehawk. Base Firebird body with all the upgraded Firehawk stuff. Originally the Firehawk for the late 3rd gen (91-92) and early 4th gen (lt1 cars) was only available on the Formula. Once the LS1 dropped the Firehawk package could be had on a Trans am for the first time.
@PapaSmurf337
@PapaSmurf337 11 күн бұрын
@michaelthompson4178 Firebirds came standard with V6 yes, but it was always an option to add a V8. Formulas and T/As came with the V8 by standard. The first 4th gen Firehawk I saw 25 years ago the owner told me it was a Firebird and not a Formula or T/A so either he was wrong about his car or Firehawk was available on a V8 optioned Firebird

@michaelthompson4178 11 күн бұрын
@@PapaSmurf337 3rd gen cars, yes you could add a V8. The 4th gen (LT1) cars you could not add the V8 as a option. Hence why the only V8 LT1 cars (talking about stock) are either a Formula or trans am. The Formula had the base looking body but had the trans am engine/suspension. I owned both a 3rd gen (87 Formula) and an 4th gen (96 Formula) not actually sure about the 91-92 Firehawk but those look exactly like the Formula of that year only difference is the Firehawk sticker, wheels. I'm sure there's a Motorweek video floating around on here on the 91-92 cars which were the original Firehawk. Edit: just checked out the Motorweek video. He says, just order a Firebird Formula, came in red only with so and so option package. So even the original Firehawk was a standard Formula with the Firehawk option package

Pretty sure that's a Formula based Firehawk. I think they're pretty rare as most were T/A based Hawk. IDK for sure. I've owned Catfish, but never a Bird, even though my mom had a 99 Firebird V6 when I was in highschool. When talking GEN4 LS1 Firebirds, the Formula is the equivalent to the GEN4 Camaro Z/28, and the T/A is the equivalent to the GEN4 Camaro SS.

Is this really a 2002 firehawk? I thought they had the same front bumpers as my 01 WS6.

I owned a 02 firehawk that was delvered with the garbage tune after SLP was caught by govt for failing smog that everybody got but complained like crazy and finally an un named man dressed all in black ( No B.S.) showed up at my door . Explained the issue i was having after hitting WOT at 80 and the car bogging was due to the garbage tune put on the 02 Firehawk after the real one failed that was what SLP wanted for last F-body cars that was gona be a monster . He explained most owners didnt go WOT after loping along at 80 or notice tue issues because in other paramenters the tune was ok enough that people didnt know to complain but people who expected what Firehawks generally were and flogged them would . He then made me an offer . He said . If you dont ask for my Name or any other questions, ask for paperwork and agree i was never here i will take my laptop and put the original tune that SLP wanted on the final cars and not only will the bog going WOT at high speed go away but the car will perform better all around . Go in your house , wait 30 min , dont come outside or speak to me and make sure the rental car is gone and your car will now have all the power it was supposed to . Answer me quickly or i get in rental car and return to Detroit , was never here and you live with it . I said OK , followed his instructions and 30 min later took car out and got on it a bunch at higher speeds and it pulled hard and no more bogging and breaking up plus it pulled like a beast everywhere wanting to spin the big sticky Firestone Summer tires with awful treadwear while still scrambling forward and stuffing you in seat in a way our C5 didnt and nobody believed the car was stock . Firehawks were always underated and over performed as cars that SLP produced . The 02 with illegal factory tune was a beast of its time for what it was and considering the extra weight and more advanced set up of the corvette beat up on it in straightline and you need a 405 HP Z0-6 to go faster . They rated the Firehawk at 345 now that C5 was rated at 350 after initially being rated at 345 itself as GM Never liked an F - body with advertised figures above the Vette but if you had the intended tune this was well above 345 and i suspect making Z0-6 power at least or pretty close considering what it did to my stock C8 and others . In 02 the car was pretty mad for what was around for an NA car and nobody believed it was stock . With that said , its decades later so firehawk may have lost some of its fire but if this one runs well or was tweaked i cant see how it doesnt destroy the Subaru in a drag race . BRZ is a cool car I would enjoy but for simple straightline stuff the firehawk is gonna slaughter it if it has good tires and doesnt blow the tires off . 5-60 / 70 would be even worse . If its got the original garbage tune and not the black coat tune or some modern tuner didnt fix the EPA tune thrown on in hurry after caught and tired maybe its closer . But the puke tune was less noticeable at lower speeds so we will see but having owned a 02 Firehawk i know with the tune SLP designed for it , it was a beast that was not like a WS6 , SS or C5 and something like a Z06 , freakish for time and craziest car SLP did for F - BODIES with previous gens always being freaks as well but 02s were nuts if you got the right beeps and boops . But even with garbage tune should take the BRZ in acceleration test . Seems an odd match up .

Warranty >no warranty and old The brz doesn’t have a turbo which kills your credibility altogether Car and driver hit 5.5 second 0-60 with brz. Those aren’t stock width rear tires on ws6. Stock for stock would be close if the stock width ws6 would even hook.

Not a comparison of similar cars. BRZ is a track car. Firebird is a muscle car. You only compared them in the race that clearly favored one over the other. How about some lap times? Some of us are not unidimensional in how we enjoy cars. Mashing the gas pedal? Please.

Completely different cars. There are better new cars to compare the Pontiac to and better used cars to compare the Subaru to. You can’t compare price to price. Old cars have high maintenance cost and new cars have low maintenance cost. Add price and maintenance together to compare. You focused on 0 to 60 and admitted the Subaru is designed for driving on curvy roads. Looks like you picked the car and the tests to prove you bought the right car. Good for you. Stupid video.

But 1 Gear basically went to 55 and shift made 60! .273 gears and AUTO! Intake Filter and RAM IAR MOD, with FLOWMASTER AND HYPERTECH PROGRAM! I have absolutely no confidence in being able to buy a 2002 anything that's not got serious hidden problems. And given the age and behavior of the auto industry lately, I have even less confidence in being able to buy replacement parts when something goes wrong. Factor that into your comparison.
