I want to thank you for telling us about this quirk. I got a magnet we used to hold cards on our refrigerator. It's pretty strong, but the needle only moved about 1/4 of the way to unpeg it. Later, found if I moved the magnet above the gauge, the needle would mysteriously follow the magnet. Continuing to move it clockwise, it pulled the neddle, so it rested on the peg! My obvious approach, to keep the magnet close to the needle was not enough; I had to move the magnet to the top of the gauge. Thank you for taking time to make this video.

I am absolutely shocked but that worked so easily. Thank you so much for posting this, that was a much easier fix than pulling the cluster. I found that rotating the pointer with the magnet near the tip of the pointer was the easiest way. I had a pretty strong earth magnet about the size of my thumb and it worked very well. My 2001 explorer had the same problem while on the interstate 2 weeks ago and it has driven me crazy. Tomorrow was the day that I was going to pull the cluster or drill a hole in the plastic to get a hook in there. I really appreciate the time that you just saved me with the tip.

I just had this happen on my way home from work. Well, I mean I just notice this on my way home that the needle was low. I was freaking out because years ago my engine seized up because of no oil, synchronizer went out and my brother thought it was just low, so he kept adding more oil. He didn’t call me until it started knocking. So with that being said, I was having flashbacks lol got home and notice it was under the peg. I thought they only way to get to this was to take the dash apart and fix it. Came across this video and it took me a minute and a half and I have it fixed. Thanks so much!!

Here’s a tip. Those oil pressure gauges in Ford Rangers are called “dummy gauges”. They don’t actually show an AMOUNT of oil pressure. They only show that you have SOME oil pressure and the sending unit in the block will activate the gauge with as little as 6 or 7 pounds of oil pressure. So wether you have 6 pounds of pressure or 50 pounds, the needle will be in the same place. I highly recommend you get a real oil gauge installed. A real oil gauge has a tiny line that goes from the engine block all the way to the gauge. This tiny line will have oil in it. It will show you your ACTUAL oil pressure. You can buy one of these gauges at any auto parts house and they are fairly easy to install. They cost about $20.00. My oil gauge showed I had pressure and the needle was about in the middle. But once I installed the real oil gauge I discovered my oil pressure was only about 10 pounds and sometimes a little less. This let me know I had a problem. I cleaned the sludge out of the oil pan and now I have 50 pounds of oil pressure. I’m lucky I didn’t blow my engine.
@Gadgetman15384 жыл бұрын
I suspected that while looking at the schematic. I figured it was really an idiot light disguised as a gauge. This is my work truck and has over 240,000 miles so probably not going to spend extra on it. It just bugged me that the pressure gauge wasn't working properly. When I bought this truck it had 49,000 miles and I have had the oil analyzed by Blackstone labs at every oil change. I have been impressed with the lack of wear on this engine. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

For those that see this later I couldn`t find a suitable magnet so drilled a very small hole above the center of the needle hub and then gently took the next size smaller drill bit and went thru the drill hole and gently touched the needle hub and spun it clockwise [ the needle spins so very easily ] it dropped back in place as soon as it comes back over the gauge area . It now works just fine and continues to work , and it took under 2 minutes for whole procedure.

I had the very same problem. Auto repair place quoted $700 because they would have to remove the panel and send it to a certified repair place. They said it had something to do with the odometer. I used the 25 pound telescoping magnet from Harbor Freight that I already had. I took me longer to disassemble the magnet from the pole then to fix this issue using this method. Be sure to put the magnet behind the needle and push it and twist the magnet as you go around. It took 20 seconds to swing the needle around and tested it successfully.
