These early 2000's Honda Civics are underappreciated in the used market. However, as we will learn, you can buy one for almost nothing, put very little money into it, and have a fun, reliable daily driver for years with a long list of possible upgrades down the road .

So much hate in the comments lol. Car enthusiast should be able to appreciate other enthusiast's excitement for their ride. He has a U of A sticker on his car he's clearly a college kid. He can't go out and get a Porsche or a GTR just yet. This is a cool way to prove that for $1000 you can get a car you enjoy and have some fun with.

+jS197 I used to think that way. FWD can be fun, but just like RWD or AWD, you have to know how to use it. Once you learn judicious application of lift throttle oversteer, FWD becomes a lot more fun.

absolutely! I do small mechanical jobs out of my garage for people and one dude who has a civic a little older than this one has badass nokian Hakkapeliittas and it gets around in the snow better than my subaru with all seasons.

Civic is no Miata, but it's amazing what you can get out of one of those with a nice suspension set up. This is what makes Matt's channel so awesome, everyday drivers that we all may own or have owned - love it!

The 7th gen civic is by far the least performance oriented civic, the macpherson strut set up was botched and the double wishbone in the back had its share of geometry problems too. Suspension kinks aside it's not a bad platform and one thing it has over the miata is price. 1k for a car like this that will run reliably and take what you throw at it is a steal, and unfortunately these days no one wants to part with a decent condition Miata for less than 4k.
@mberezh
@mberezh 8 жыл бұрын
When I look at things reasonably, the Civic destroys the Miata dollar per dollar when it comes to mod-ability, handling and straight line performance. Older Civics dominate autocross to this day. However, the RWD platform makes the Miata more fun and give it more potential as the power rises. The Miata has a very forgettable engine, so do Civics unless you go VTEC(kicked in yo) but why would you get anything else. If you're looking for a cheap shitbox to boot and you're the least bit into cars you'll look for nothing but VTECs, and none of that i-VTEC bullshit.

A civic can by all means be a miata... a fwd miata that is. Great 4cyl which is arguably better than the miata 4cyl. Lite, good manual transmission, great aftermarket support, cheap to get into, and great MPG when you decide to shift.

I am so glad you took the time to review this car Matt. And thank you David for driving out for it. I have been driving a DX model for 10 years now. It's the base model with no tach, no drivers arm rest, and no rear sway bar. I have 261,500 miles on it now. It has been through many Colorado Winters and taken me to many good camp sites on national forest access roads. It doesn't give me any shit no matter how often I beat her, call her names, and spit on her while I'm matting her to the floor. I plan to take it to over 300k before the divorce.

No character. However, good on this guy for rocking what he has. Nice blank slate to begin making the car really fast. Love this series, some really interesting cars on the channel, and not all the usual fare on the other channels. Matt earns every subscription he has. Agree on the 325i, but the 318i is just too anemic for anything other than shopping trips - seriously that engine is weak - I was going to buy one back in '99 until I took it for a test drive and realised a Corolla GT would leave me for dead at the lights - plus they have pretty much all died now from overheating problems. Mind you I think the US got a different engine than we did so might not be as horrible.

Nice. I have an '04 value coupe that I bought new in 2005. At 106k miles it's required almost no maintenance and has had zero issues. It's not fast, but the steering is super responsive compared to a lot of newer economy cars and the little 4 cylinder is nice and peppy for how underpowered it is. It's hard to sell a car aftering being the sole owner for 12 years but I'm looking forward to an upgrade to a new GTI early next year.

The reason to remove the front sway bar is to reduce understeer, where basically you can stiffen the rear or soften the front. Stock EM2's have way to much understeer, but a good chassis. David stiffened the rear with a sway and those Tein springs. It's a nice setup.

It has interesting; if minor, modifications! A generation of Civic loathed for it's suspension setup showing what it can do with a little elbow grease. Any high school gear head or weekend warrior hopeful watching just got a boatload of information on how to set up a neutral-handling car with great inputs for less than $2k, easy. Seems like a great autocross or small road course (Waterford Hills anyone?) set up that's as easy to justify (cost-wise) as any other toy (motorcycle, ATV, etc); even while leaving money aside for tires, helmet, and fees. Sure you'll either have to mod it further to move on up to something faster eventually, but there's nothing wrong with coming in on the ground floor.

Traded mine in last weekend on a year old "new to me" vehicle. Original owner, 97,410 miles. Fun car. Should be showing up in the used market soon (dealership was going to auction it off). Fully stock. Moon roof, rear "spoiler", and that funny air dam in front of the moon roof. Was a little squirrelly on the interstate - likely needed new rear shocks.

Wonder how my 355K mile Integra GSR would compare. Type R rear sway bar, Dunlop 205/45-16 tires, lowered on Koni Sport shocks with GSR/ITR stock spring combination, and that's about it. Refreshed top end valvetrain. Stock rating was 170 hp. Removing a front sway bar could lend more grip by allowing more body roll on the front end. When going through a corner, something has to give. The suspension gives and the body rolls first, then the tires will break loose eventually. Reducing roll with a stiffer sway bar imparts more forces to the tires, which will overcome grip quicker. Increasing body roll at one end will allow the tires to grip more before breaking loose.

Sad that so many people post on here just to hate on the kid. I am sure there are a bunch of younger viewers on this channel, and this is the type pf car they will be driving for their first car. Its not like he put a stupid wing on it either, just some basic suspension mods to increase his handling. That's what I've always liked about TST, shows all different types of cars

I also have an 02 civic coupe ex. It's automatic, and the color of it is Nighthawk Black Pearl. (According to the paint code) I'm 15 too. I can't drive it yet though, my parents don't want me to drive it yet until I pass my drivers test. Plus it needs a new battery, new left side mirror needs to be replaced. My uncle was selling it to me, so I asked my parents to see if they can get it. The previous owner who had it, it was his mom. She didn't drive it too often, so it has under 60,000 kilometers.

I used to own this car and hands down it had the worst/stiffest suspension I've ever experienced in a stock vehicle and mine had normal thick tyres not low profile alloy wheels. I couldn't get over how bad the ride was. Still it served me well.
