Just tried this and it worked perfectly! 3 different garages tried to recharge my system and all told me they couldn't charge my crv and I needed a new pump. All along a 5 min fix. Thank you so much for this. My girlfriend was revving the car while I filled it and when I looked through the window and asked if it worked she had nipples like bullets and said hell yes 😂

Great that it worked for you, but a word of caution. There are a number of faults which display the same symptom (low pressure on the suction of the compressor) such as a blocked filter drier or faulty thermal expansion valve. Adding refrigerant to a system having these faults and not a lack of refrigerant can result in excessively high pressure on the discharge side of compressor, which can result in catastrophic consequences.

I have a 2006 crv. First air only worked while it was in drive. But it blew cold air as long as you were moving bc one fan was out. Then it stopped blowing cold at all. Mechanic charged nearly $350 for a new fan and diagnostics and Freon. I kept telling him I’m aware of the fan issue but that’s not why it’s not cold, it’s just not cold while it’s idle or stopped. He said I have 35 years experience, this fan is your problem! Ok he changed it, cold air still didn’t work. I went back. They quoted me $400 more for a hose. Claiming hose was $100 for part itself-they double that , of course , labor was the rest. First of all I got the new hose off amazon for $30. Secondly-when I went to find out how labor intensive it is to change it myself, not only is it right on top-easy to get to not under the motor like he claimed, but nothing appears to be wrong with it. So I found this video and tried it and it worked! You’re right about revving. Even after a few squirts and waiting only a couple seconds nothing appeared to be happening. My partner helping me kept wanting to quit bc the gauge was saying it was full, but when I revved it , it wasn’t . So I said let’s try one more time and he grudgingly added a little more and I revved it pretty good up to 3000 and held it for about 10-15 solid seconds-EUREKA! Ice cold air started blowing out. Way colder than air ever was when I bought it 2 years ago-from a dealership not a person so it was allegedly in tip top condition when I got it. Or at least it was spotless and looked good. Thanks so much! It’s got other issues, bad suspension-bearings and basically all of it is bad-as I live 14 miles down country dirt road and Honda suspensions are flimsy. So anyway $400-700 on a/c was not a top priority-actually driving on the spare as we speak..bent suspension has worn 9 tires in a year..but I digress. I wasn’t gonna have a/c period. No tint, in Alabama, it’s not even bearable. Sweat pours into my eyes , I can’t see=dangerous. I got to where I just didn’t leave house til dark or early morning. Couldn’t take my dogs anymore. Got one kid with extreme heat sensitivity-had seizures from it. This is a lifesaver for us. I want my money back from the shop since half what I paid for was DIAGNOSTICS. From now on I’ll get all my info from KZbin. and I don’t care how allegedly temporary this is, this entire car is temporary. Got no resale value, it’s basically totaled . but with working a/c I probably just added a grand to its value-for $36.

Thanks for the helpful tip! I just purchased a 2002 crv and this is one of the issues. Another is a front right brake line. It goes from the master to a junction box and it’s leaking at the fitting at that junction box. Do you have any helpful information about this? Thanks for the great video! I watched a video about a typical problem with the ac where the compressor goes bad , he called it Black Death, where corrosion builds up inside the compressor and contaminants the entire system if not fixed in time. I’m pretty sure my issue will be fixed with what your video shows. Thanks and hopefully you know something about the brake line issue.

Just saw an Aussie C.A.R. mechanic say the problem was with the compressors and some actually had broken scrolls inside and some had broken outside casing on the compressor. Perhaps this was due to overheating? I am looking to buy a CRV used and don't want to add the cost of a new compressor after buying one. Interesting video.

Yeah that's a different issue. This guy didn't have his AC compressor fail. The Aussie video you're talking about discusses total compressor failure. So this video is good advice for people who still have a working compressor but it wont work for everyone.

to whom it may help. I read that all crv's from the 2002-2008 the ac system was poorly designed and there's a recall. If your ac is not working and the compressor is not engaging most likely thats what the problem is. All heat from the engine disintegrates the clutching in the ac it was poorly designed. I believe that if you take it to a Honda dealer before it has 100k miles they have to replace it free of charge. dont wait till is to late. let me know if this helped.

3 years ago I would have agreed with you that all CRV's from 2002-2008 have poorly designed A/C systems. But after I did the fix in this video 2 years ago, I have never had a problem since...with ICE COLD, I'm talking make your skin hurt if you hold it in front of the fan on a 100 degree day cold. I should shoot a video showing the temperature reading. But hey, if you can get a free system from the dealer, GO FOR IT!

@mikesbackyardmechanic
@mikesbackyardmechanic 2 жыл бұрын
Hello there! The 2005 CRV is the same generation as the 2002 and should be exactly the same as shown in my video. You do not need a special adapter/fitting unless you have modified your vehicle AC system differently than what came from the Honda dealership. It should work exactly as shown in the video. I just drove my sweet CRV yesterday and it still has ICE COLD A/C without ANY other work since I did what was shown in the video. It has required NO further coolant charges or adjustment. If you don't have any other issues with your AC, this should fix you right up! Let us know how it goes. If it works, you could give us our first SUPER Thanks! I have a 2004. I read somewhere that the compressors were bad. There was no formal recall. But Honda would replace it, if you were below of certain number of miles, I believe. By time I found this out, I was above the threshold. They knew these compressors were poorly designed and they should have given a substantial discount, at least to original owners, still in possession. It's a great truck, but this was very shoddy. I will still try your technique.

I wish it was so simple. If R-134a is gone then the compressor oil is also gone. Adding refrigerant is a temp fix, you also need to add a proper amount of A/C compressor oil, around 4 oz I believe. My 2006 CR-V stopped cooling after 9 years, found out the fittings are rated to leak 1/4 ounce of refrigerant per year, and there are 8 fittings total if I'm correct. It was $120 to properly evacuate and readd oil and 134a. 2005-2007 Honda Odyssey, 2002-2004 Honda CR-V, or 2004 Acura TSX had really crappy issue with the compressor exploding inside, the internals completely shattering, forcing debris throughout your AC system. After that you are screwed into replacing all HVAC parts: compressor, condenser, hoses, evaporator, expansion device, seals etc. If you only replace compressor it will die again later because of debris left inside :( The whole system kit is only $200 online these days but it is labor intensive.
@mikesbackyardmechanic
@mikesbackyardmechanic 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and additional information. In many cases, including mine, the compressor had not exploded, and the fittings were not leaking. Because it has been a year and a half since I added the refrigerant as shown in the video and there have been no leaks or problems. Still ICE COLD A/C with no further adjustment or refrigerant. However, I'm glad you posted the info in case there are some experiencing what you stated. THANKS!!

Did your a/c clutch disengage when your psi would drop to zero before you charged it? I'm having an issue where my compressor doesn't stay engaged. It's cold when it does but gets warmer until it reengages and then sometimes it doesn't engage long enough. I'm at like 90psi static and around 40psi when the AC is on (not revved). I don't think it needs more pressure but perhaps with 10 more psi that might keep the compressor engaged? Maybe the pressure switch is turning off the compressor to save it? Did you experience that with your low psi before? What do you think? I'm thinking it's the thermocouple cutting out the compressor b/c maybe it's overheating. I need to feel it. But my thought is maybe this isn't the case b/c it happens right when I start it and start troubleshooting, the compressor shouldn't overheat that fast. Argh, AC is so frustrating!
@mikesbackyardmechanic
@mikesbackyardmechanic 4 жыл бұрын
I feel you brother. It sounds like you have enough PSI though. It may be a switch problem like you say, because the only time the AC compressor turns off in my CRV is when you turn the AC off. I hope you find the problem, let us know if you do. Thanks for watching!

Are you not worried you're overfilling your system? 100psi when off? I don't see many sources for a safe psi when the engine / Ac is off. I did read that over 60psi can damage the compressor from the redtek site. They recommend between 30 -38 psi. However that's when charging so that'd be with the ac on max.

I see this is an older post, but i wanted to ask you. I think the SC system have overpressure protection. What happens with the pressure when the engine is off, after you've added while its running? You said you had 100 psi before start. Can the pressure be to high at any point using your method which may be a problem later on?
@mikesbackyardmechanic
@mikesbackyardmechanic 4 жыл бұрын
All I can tell you is that it has been almost 4 years (and counting) now and I have not had to refill it again. Both before and after I charged it, it was over 100 psi when the car was off, and I have had NO problems. It works perfectly with ICE COLD A/C. NO MORE SWEATING IN THE SUMMER!! YES!. I would recommend adding little by little as shown in the video until it starts getting cold. After posting this for over 3 years, I have NEVER had someone post that it hurt their system from over-pressurization, and 100's of people have tried it with success. But like anything in life, you need to be careful as you do it, and do at your own risk. Again this is for cars that have no other problems with the a/c system. I hope it works for you!

I took it to a shop, they vacuumed all the refrigerant out and I only had 8oz. they Put the correct amount (14 or 16 oz I think) And it works worse now. Maybe I have a leak? I'm going to look for leaks with UV light, they added dye when they re-charged it.

Hi Fella, it sounds like you do have a leak. I did mine 4 years ago, one time, and I've never had to do anything with my A/C again. IT's STILL ice cold. What was the PSI of the refrigerant when they charged it at the shop? Especially when it is revved to 2500 RPM? The pressure of the system at 2500 RPM is just as important as the quantity of refrigerant. Sorry about the issues your having. :-)

Thinking of doing this on my 2004 CRV. Was your compressor clutch engaging before you added the freon? Mine is not engaging and I can't tell if it's because I don't have enough pressure to engage it or of the clutch itself is broken.
@mikesbackyardmechanic
@mikesbackyardmechanic 7 жыл бұрын
Yes my clutch was engaging before I added the Freon. If your clutch is not engaging when you turn the AC on then its probably the clutch or compressor. But I can see why you might feel you have a 'catch 22'. What PSI does the gauge read when the clutch is not engaged? If its really low, then add some coolant and see if the clutch engages. If the PSI is already high, then you probably need to have the clutch and/or compressor checked to see why its not engaging.

Thank you for this video. I have 1 question though. I was planning on replacing the ac compressor in my moms CRV, but I think I’m going to try this first. @mikesbackyardmechanic

Prior to fixing it as shown in the video...for 2 years during the summer time when it was hot, it would not work at all. When it was NOT hot out, it would blow a little cooler. As soon as I did what is shown in the video, it immediately got ICE COLD. So you should know right away if it will fix it. If your pressure is dropping to zero when someone is revving the engine, then please add a little at a time while someone is revving the engine until the pressure gets up to 30 to 35 psi. Thanks for watching, hope it helps.

A point to watch when cleaning the air con condenser (radiator) to get rid of the insects that have clogged it, be very careful when using a hose as after a few years the fins become very delicate and even a low pressure hose will bend them and completely block the condenser (radiator) when I touch the fins gently on my 05 Honda crv they are like tissue paper and have now decided to replace the condenser, problem is a partially blocked condenser will stop the air flow to the main engine cooling radiator ,as the air con condenser is in front of it and I tow a large caravan and need all the cooling to the engine I can get.

Great video and I'm considering doing that. However, one concern- Short version question: I'm concerned about overcharging the system, which would put too much pressure on it and cause it to not work effectively, or have it blow. Longer version: So I bought an 08 CR-V. My mechanic did a full inspection on it, testing/checking the car out thoroughly. AC system does not leak and has "recommended" pressure. When weather is 100 or below it works fine. However, today in the high heat of 110 the clutch plate was CONSTANTLY kicking on and off. Well, when it gets hot outside the pressure of an AC system goes up, which can cause the compressor to constantly turn off and on. Wouldn't overcharging it exacerbate the issue?
@mikesbackyardmechanic
@mikesbackyardmechanic Жыл бұрын
Hello there! I was concerned about overcharging as well, and that's why I added a little at a time. I would suggest that you see what the pressure is with the car running at 2.5K RPM with the AC on MAX. If it is below 20 PSI, I would add a little at a time until it gets to about 35 PSI, WHILE it is running at 2.5K+ RPMs. If it has more than 35 PSI while it is running at 2.5K+ RPMs than it is probably not a refrigerant charge issue. I still have ICE COLD AC at 100 degrees outside from doing this only ONCE almost 5 years ago. I hope you get it figured out! Thanks for watching and subscribing to our channel for further tips and upgrades to your sweet CRV!
@kenyoung1981
@kenyoung1981 Жыл бұрын
@@mikesbackyardmechanic thanks! So in my research I found out my 08 CR-V's compressor will shut off when pressure gets too high, to protect itself. But I also realized my condenser fan (passenger side fan up front) isn't engaging. So when ambient temp hits 105 or more it's causing the heat/pressure in the system to be too high. I let out a little freon and so far my AC is working fine with the lower pressure. But once I get that fan fixed I should be golden. I've already replaced the 2 relays in the fuse box. Next will be the high side switch, then the low side. then the fan itself. If none of that works then testing wires for continuity (which I could do first to probably save money but at least I'll have all brand new components for the fan 🤣)
