My local dealer called me informing me that my filter just came in while I was watching this video. They told me it was just an inline filter. If I had known it was so labor intensive I never would have ordered it (it was $80 bucks). I never had any intention of doing it myself but it looks like it’s going to cost me $150 bucks or so just for the labor charge. Wow, looks like an opportunity for them to screw up lots of other stuff while doing this. Not sure it’s worth it versus lots of drains and refills. The video solves the mystery of why I can’t find my “fill plug” since it was replaced by that hose line and “jet” that’s supposed to get more fluid to 3rd gear per the recall. You are so patient doing this job - I hope the mechanic doing it for me is equally patient and competent!

I'd certainly double check their work once you get it back. Those guys get paid by the job and time is money. And, you certainly could have done much better on the part. Amazon currently has the genuine Honda filter part # 25450-P7W-003 for $65 and the aftermarket version for $18.50. I don't fault competent shops for charging a reasonable price for their work. $230 bucks for that job is very reasonable. As the saying goes, a good plumber is worth the price. The cost of overhead in running an auto repair business is a lot more than you'd think. I don't work at my occupation for free, either. I just prefer to do such things myself. Not only to save a bit of coin but also to take my time and know that it was done correctly. I truly hope that your experience is uneventful.

Useful video. I found it better than most, but there are a few things. First, I didn't have to take out the tray on my 2003 (essentially the same as your 2002). I was able to do it by just removing the battery and then some of the connectors/holdowns. That allowed me to push cables around such that I could get one of the flexible head ratchet boxes on the two bolts holding the tube on the end of the filter (love those adjustable ratchets... they really make contortionist jobs like this easier). While everything was opened up, I took the opportunity to look at the solenoid screens that are right below the battery. Sadly, I thought it had a rubber o-ring to seal, but it doesn't. It has a fiber gasket which I didn't have. Fortunately mine wasn't buggered very much so I took a gamble and reassembled everything after cleaning the three screens (which were surprisingly NOT clogged). So far so good. The only other thing is that most people generally don't have an open end wrench large enough to lightly tighten the oil filter. I know I didn't! It is something like a 1" or so. I had to gently use some channel lock pliers which I do *not* really suggest. YOu have to be careful with those things. It would be better to prepare ahead of time and verify you have a correct (large) wrench for the end of the filter. Duh! Stupid me! Anyhow, good video... Tomorrow is the timing belt. I have to see if you have one for that.

Appreciate your video. Very helpful. I was able to complete the job successfully without removing the battery tray, without ever getting under the van. I pulled out the battery and the intake rubber duct, unplugged the big anti-lock brake electrical connector, and pulled the two 10 mm filter bracket bolts from there. I have 90th percentile large hands, but still was able to do it this way.

This video gave me the confidence to do the filter change on my 2002 Odyssey with 178k miles on original tranny. I wasn't sure about doing this because of all the stuff to unplug and remove, but it turned out easier than I thought. What I discovered is that you do not need to go under the van to remove the tray. I found it easy to just go under the tray from the front gap between tray and grill with simple open/box end wrench (12mm) and there was plenty of room to swing wrench. It would be even easier if I had a ratchet box wrench, but no problem. Another thing I discovered is to not break those two tie-wrap tabs holding cables to tray like was done in this video. Instead, just cut the tie that is around the cable. When you pull the tray out, remove the cut tie from the clip leaving you an opening in the clip to put a fresh tie through. Insert the ties before you reinstall. This was really easy. Oh, I did not do a drain either, just a filter change. Virtually no fluid comes out.

I did the same thing with that tray bolt. Dropped the wrench a couple of times, but very doable.

I rigged up an ATF funnel with a 3/8 fuel line and was able to slide it over the ATF dipstick spout. Easy to fill without removing the 2nd gear retrofit. The Transmission takes 3.7 Litres. Just my 2 cents The video was exceptional.

Thank you so much! I just ordered it from the Honda dealer. I should have read your earlier comment to see the part#. Honda dealer labors $$$ get higher and higher in recent days. I am back to work on cars myself when I can and so glad have someone like you who would share his expertise and made such a nice and clear video. Still, I will send to my friend who is a mechanic to perform this work, because I don't like to deal with that nut at the odd location and my city will be below freezing temperature. But I am so glad to know the exact process from you!

After watched two good videos about installing this part for 03 Honda Odyssey, it took me more than 4 hours to get in installed. Here is my Experience: 1. don't need to uninstall battery tray 2. uninstall engine plastic cover - 4 bolts 3. remove black intake air hose 4. remove battery 5. unplug 2 wire holders (not wire plug) from bracket attached to upper left of battery tray when you look at the tray 6. unplug a big grey wire plug (right above transmission filter) 7. use 10 mm combination ratchet wrench !!! to lose two bolts with telescoping magnetic pick up tool so bolt won't be dropped 8. use 8" adjusted wrench uninstall and install filter 9. when screwing filter, i bent bracket which is used to hold filter with two bolts a little bit so it is easier to screw filter in ...

Excellent Instructional Video, you covered every detail completely. Just to note, I have a shop manual for our 02 Odyssey and the fluid capacity for the Automatic transmission states: Model BYBA Initial Fill is 3.5 Quarts. Total fill for 5 speed BYBA is 8.3 Quarts. You are the first person to inform us that this transmission actually has a filter, we have never been told this. We have 217,000 miles on transmission and it just had its third rebuild. I do not know if the transmission repair shop replaced with a new filter at time of rebuilds.This has been an amazing reliable and fun to drive van except for the tranny failures. It has served us well functionally as well drivability, its just easy and fun to drive and park, especially on roads with curves. Great handling and suspension.We bought the van used four years old and I will check to see, but probably has never had the recall done to add the 2nd gear lubricator, we were never informed by our servicing dealer. It makes sense that if the filter had been changed regularly per maintenance schedule of every 50,000 miles as well the transmission drain and flush, we would have eliminated three transmission overhauls. The filter change service would have been an important part of maintaining the reliability of this transmission as well as changing the fluid every 2-3 years. Thank You big!

+David Whittaker Thanks for the kind comments. Though history has shown that these vans have somewhat fragile transmissions, it is hard to say why some lucky owners go a long time on the original transmission while others like you go through 2 or more. Perhaps extra diligent maintenance, including ATF fluid and filter changes, makes a difference. I like to think so. Sadly, our Odyssey met its maker earlier this year when it tried to compete with the steel bumper of a 70's vintage Chevy truck bumper at 45 mph in the rain. Luckily no one was injured. It was on its original transmission at 180,000 miles and still going strong. I would hope that yours had the 2nd gear recall performed on the first rebuild or perhaps they addressed the lubrication issue internally. It is odd that Honda doesn't include the filter change in its recommended maintenance. Perhaps that's why most Honda techs are unaware of its existence.

+David Whittaker if you do this about 5 -6 times then that would be "changing the transmission oil". This video is good but one drain and fill is only mixing 1/3 new with 2/3 old oil. So to get it mostly clean oil about five more times should be pretty clean. And since you are mixing with old you have to do it more since you are diluting the old with new.

Thanks for posting that video. For years I've been reading that the transmission filter could only be changed by taking out the entire transmission and tearing it apart. Watching you work on a van just like mine showed me that what I had read wasn't correct. I followed your example and changed out the transmission filter, and it wasn't a hard job to do, at all. Thanks again for a well explained video.

First video I have seen that makes it clear what has to happen to accomplish this task. I have the factory manual and it shows nothing. Have a mint 2003 Pilot (Pacific NW - NO RUST) that has never had the filter changed, 180K. Plan on driving it to at least 300K. We have a 2001 Oddesy at work with 340K that just keeps getting abused and just keeps on going. Just replaced the timing belt - water pump for the second time on the Pilot so this doesn't look like too bad a job. I'm sure the Oddesy - Pilot are pretty much the same when it comes to this being changed. Thanks for such a detailed video bud! Excellent!!!!

I too wish you had dissected the old ATF Filter after removing, I would have though it's sometimes disappointing when it's still factory fresh looking. I spent 2 hours replacing a 100K+ fuel filter from a Isuzu Trooper frame once and upon inspection realized it could have easily gone to the junkyard with the original filter still in use. Good video.

Okay, so I took the plunge, I did it. I found out you don't really have to remove the air box or duct connecting the TB, but I can see how it might be helpful to some people. The absolute HARDEST PART for ME was getting all the connectors off that battery plate. They just wouldn't budge. Eventually they had to. Other thing that bugged me after I was finished was, "Did I apply too much torque to the filter upon tightening?" I hand tightened it, then gave it 3/4 turn with the wrench, when I removed it, it wasn't really on there with that much force so I know that I gave it plenty. I didn't assemble everything until I was sure there were no leaks, so I used cable ties to hold the battery in the cavity while it started it up and checked. No leaks. For 140k miles, it runs like a champ, used DW-1 since no ATF-Z1 (although you can get Idemitsu Type-H and it's same formulation as Z1). Took me around 3 hours, might take other people more or less. Word of caution: YES, you have to drain out the system from the bottom, if you don't, you'll have a mess of ATF gush out of the threaded side of the filter... good thing I had plenty of rags and only was a tiny bit, I screwed it back in before it made a huge mess.

Excellent job on the video! I bought a filter but was not sure where it was located. I did a triple drain and fill with Valvoline High miles Import fluid per recommendation of a Honda mechanic (who also recommended a certain type of transmission cooler which I never bought or installed) at 160,000 miles. At 239,000 miles, the transmission light came on, though it seemed to shift fine. Did not come back on after shutting off and restarting, but I think it's time to finally change the filter and do another triple drain and fill. I appreciate the great video! Oh, I never knew that you check the ATF with the engine off! I always checked idling! Guess I should have read the manual, lol!

Thanks for this! I completed the same on my 2008 Odyssey yesterday using this video as a guide. Super weird part was that the factory filter I ordered (which I verified was the right part number) was 2mm shorter than the one i removed. This caused the feed tube that gets the new o-ring to not fit all the way in. I ended up removing the bracket it bolts to and grinding it down so it all would fit properly. It worked, but took longer than I planned.

That is odd and good job with your custom solution. You said that you verified that the part number was correct. Did you verify that it was the correct part number for your 2008 Odyssey or that it matched the part number that I listed in the video comments which was for a 2002?

WorseThanChiggers, I looked it up on the Honda parts website using the VIN. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but the transmission is a Jasper rebuild. Holding the two filters side by side they looked exactly the same. Wouldn’t have noticed one was slightly shorter than the other unless it was pointed out.

I fill through the dip stick but to each his own. Nice video, appreciate your commitment to the do it your selfer's. The design, sadly, ensured continued costly service by the dealers for most owners. May want to open the filter and look for any clutch pack material if you are really curious. Second gear is usually the first to go. Hope the magnet was reasonably clean of metal. An external oil cooler for the transmission is well worth the money and effort. THANKS HONDA!

Excellent video how to! I will go for changing the transmission filter once the temps worm up. 2003 Odyssey. I will also be changing the timing belt/water pump(bought the kit earlier today). A comment on the transmission fluid capacity - the manual calls for 3.1 quarts after a drain. Also when I change the transmission fluid, I use the dip stick whole to fill the new one. Do not have to remove the second gear jet mechanism.

It’s possible to fill the transmission thru the dip stick tube .. using a small funnel and a 5/16” K&S brass tube taped to the bottom end of the funnel .. it goes slower, but not that much slower, and you don’t have to deal with getting to the filler plug.

I guessing you took your van to the dealer and the new transmission fluid line was added above the fluid fill plug? My 2004 with the same transmission doesn't have that feature. With 175,000mi on it 2nd gear shifts smoothly about 50% of the time. I got my van used with 124,000mi and have done it fluid change twice and the transmission hasn't really gotten worse after 48,000mi. While your down there servicing the star trek ship looking transmission solenoid is a good idea. This is a terrific 🎥 👍 on how to not have to replace your transmission. It's usually 1 of the 5 or 6 shifting solenoids that need servicing or replacing that causes honda to say replace the transmission. again great 🎥 👍

On my 02, I was able replace the filter without removing the battery tray, but I dropped a screw and had to remove it anyways to find it lol. TBH, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, just took time figuring things out and finding that damn screw. Next time, I should be able to replace it in about an hour including drain and refill. I will likely also change the filter whenever I do a drain and refill, just for good measure. Also the ATF filler bolt would not budge, but it was much easier refilling through the dipstick tube. I cut a piece of drinking straw slide on large diameter wire shrink wrap so it formed around my funnel after heating it. Perfect size for dipstick tube and no spill when filling.

Excellent instruction video. My 03 odyssey EX has original transmission with 199500 miles. The drive "D" started blinking around 180000 miles. I haven't done anything for it. The car started shaking(kinda of driving on rumble stripe) at 187000 miles when speed was over 40 mile/h with acceleration. No acceleration, no vibration. Interestingly, the vibration completely disappeared around 195000 miles without any repair. Did the transmission fluid drain and fill at 100000 miles. I am going to drain and fill it this weekend. It is too much to replace the trans filter by diy

I had used Valvoline Max Life for my ATF for the Honda Odyssey a year and a half ago and when it came out tonight, it was almost black. The Honda dealer during their inspection, said it needed to be changed last summer... but then I read on some ATF expert website and they said that it can be dark red or blackish red and still be ok. I had to use my Husky Robogrips to take off/on the filter. I bent the filter slightly, but it should be ok eh?

Odyssey had problems with the early 99 to 2002 to 2003 and they invented a tube connection that goes on the end of that black cylinder filter. It's so tight I'm not going to touch it. According to the dealership it's not even serviceable and not necessary and it's just a magnet. If you want a filter order one off eBay and put it on the cooller line going to the radiator. The line is closest to the driver side wheel.

Just did the filter change on my 02 EX-L. I didn't have room to wrench with the tray in like Jack Wu, but I didn't have to go underneath to remove the tray. Here's what I did. 1. Disconnect the 2 plugs on the top left of the tray. Remove the connector Y bracket (1 screw on the backside) 2. Disconnect the plug on the top right of the tray. Disconnect the large gray ABS plug and pull out the cable tie (underneath the ABS) 3. With all 4 plugs disconnected push the harness out of the way. Now you can reach a 5th connector attached to the engines pipes. Remove this connector. 4. With the 5th connector out I had room to hit the bottom battery tray bolt on the fender with a 12mm offset wrench ($6 from AutoZone). You have to tilt it slightly to the left to barely get 1mm clearance on the ABS unit. My bolt broke loose with only 15 PSI. No breaker bar needed. Use lots of WD40 and tap the bolt with a bar to loosen any oxidation. 5. Now you can unbolt the tray and have room to wrench on the filter bolts.

My original 2nd Gen Odyssey Transmission failed at 144k. The Genuine Honda Rebuilt Transmission that replaced it died with 127k on it. With the second transmission, I changed the fluid myself three times a year. Maybe the filter change would have improved the service life. I would feel a little uneasy about dong this filter replacement myself and I would expect the dealership service center to talk me out of hiring them to do it for me.

@WorseThanChiggers

@@deeppatel5673 I assume that you're asking about the air box and plastic/rubber snorkel tube that goes to the throttle body rather than the entire intake manifold. If so, yes since that is in the way of most things. Depending on your vehicle, take out whatever is in the way of getting to the plug on top of the transmission. However, if you have a very long skinny funnel, it is possible to fill the transmission through the transmission's dipstick tube. It's slow doing it that way and potentially messy if you're not careful and impatient. But it can be done without having to get down in there to access the fill plug.

Does it rev high at 30 MPH as though it won't shift into the next higher gear? Try shifting manually to see if it will go into each gear. You might get lucky and only need to change an external pressure switch. That all assumes that you have an adequate fluid level now.

Edit: the only filter on the transmission is the black cylinder on top under behind the battery. The dealership says do not service it. It's just a magnet. If you want to filter you have to order one off eBay like the magnifine. Or a cheaper one. Install the new filter on the closest to the front wheel driver side.

I just did mine a few minutes ago. I filled with 3.5 quarts like the manual said the capacity was after a drain fill. You said you were going to get more after putting in 3 quarts at the end of your video. I think that if I did the check for fill level correctly after a long warm up and then check right after turning off to 5 minutes after. I am at the bottom of the dipstick holes even after 3.5 quarts. I also let it drain overnight so I might need to add even more. The filter also likely has a .20ish quart fill level. So I am thinking that the transmission may have a fill level of 3.75 to 3.9 quarts after a drain and this particular filter change. Maybe a full 4 quarts with filling a non-stock installed on the outer transmission cooler line; "Magnefine" filter or just a little less than 4 quarts. I don't have a Magnefine and mine is now at the top hole with 3.9 quarts after warming up.

Wow that's awful. So sorry too hear of the accident. As long as all are okay. Do you know what code 0710 means? And if I change the the trans fluid would that resolve code? Is it necessary to change filter or you would personally recommend it. Thank again for your advice. Michael
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 жыл бұрын
Thankfully, all occupants were fine which is truly all that really matters. I don't have any personal experience with a P0710 code but it looks to be an issue with the transmission temperature sensor. The transmission could truly be overheating or there's an issue with a faulty sensor. First thing to do is ensure that your transmission fluid is clean and full and that there are no leaks. Then, check to see if the sensor or its wiring are bad. I wouldn't know if simply changing the fluid will resolve the problem but if you have never changed the fluid, it's a place to start. Good luck!

Great video. Never take the dealers word. Don't believe everything you hear. Always read your manuel and you won't go wrong. These steps are similar to a filter and fluid change on a 2006 3.5. Using YT and an Ody. forum as guides, I got it all done in 4 hours. Now the 2006 filter is a bit more tricky. It has 3 10 mm bolts holding it, the trickier part is there's a little washer that fits in between the filter and the output fluid line. Like the forum post wrote by the boy says, the most time consuming part is removing the battery tray. Also, I've read that doing the flush more than once isn't necessary if your using Honda fluid. I don't think in this video he used 6+ quarts ...I only watched till the filter was removed, install is self explainitory . It doesn't make sense to drain out brand new fluid now does it men?

WTC!... Sincerest THANKS for taking the time to record this procedure. Did I say thanks? Oh yes, and also thank you.. with thanks. I need confirmation on something. I think my assumption is correct, but... The fitting that now takes the place of the filler plug is a fix to lubricate 2nd gear, so that would have to be the return line from the transmission cooler/radiator, correct? I am preparing to install an auxiliary transmission cooler and need to get my (outlet-to cooler/return-line-from cooler) ducks in a row.

I've you've made it that far on the original transmission and fluid, you have a guardian angel on your shoulder. Check the fluid condition. If it is dark and smells burnt, it is too late and you should just leave it alone. Doing anything now may accelerate the time when you will experience a transmission failure. Drive it until it dies which could be tomorrow or 2 years. If the fluid is still cherry red and does not smell burnt, go ahead and perform 3 full fluid exchanges or get it flushed.
