2002 Isuzu Trooper 3.5l 4L30E Transmission Fixed well almost

Low band adjustment on Fiona to attempt to fix a slipping issue. The vehicle had no 1st or 2nd gears and with the expert advice of 4L30E Guru on Planetisuzoo I was able to get this issue repaired 100 percent but after driving the vehicle several hundred miles the band started to slip. At this point the only other option is a replacement or rebuild.

Transmission cooler is must for these vehicles. I overheated the crap out of my trans driving from NJ to Saint Cloud FL. I tell you the warnings came on the trans over heated and I had to just take easy on that run. I installed a hayden cooler and I can drive down 192, 95, and the Turnpike and that center area in the vehicle is now keeping cool even after a long run but weekly I have to tap up on the engine oil as usual.

@@jumpeven6100 I set the project aside for the winter. Here's what I have done so far. I removed and cleaned the transmission pan, replaced the a&b solinoids and the filter. I only have first and reverse gear but thats an improvement over having only reverse. I can put the vehicle in any gear and it will squeal the tires. Again that an improvement over doing nothing in any gear but reverse prior. I plan to check the switch on the drivers outside of the transmission by the shifter. Sorry, I just can't thing of the name of the switch off hand at the moment. I also have a TOD light on so I need to address that Issue also. My big improvement was that it wouldn't go into winter mode before but now it does. I was able to get it to run in winter gear when the fluid was cold but not hot. That tells me at least I know 3rd gear is possible. I bought the vehicle used with the transmission not working in hopes of salvaging the transmission back to working mode. My immediate diagnosis was that the fluid was low and it came out black. Ya, I know that means burnt but it gets worse. The pan and magnet was full of fine gray shaving dust and I know the transmission is dirty inside. I know its a long shot but I believe I will get it at least functioning again when I get it cleaned out. I'll change the fluid a couple of times or flush the trans fluid after I get more improved. I plan to put the Axiom on blocks and run the trans for a bit in 4x4 before I flush the fluid as well. Last but not least, I hear a clanking noise for a moment when I'm at 1500 rpm in first gear. Not sure what that is but it seems like it might be from the TOD system, I'll look into that as well. Good luck with your transmission and please share any successes you may have. P.S. I did adjust the transmission bands as well.

I have a 96 Trooper with the same transmission. Is mine capable of reporting temperature like yours did or was that only on later years? I want to change the fluid but I’m concerned about knowing when it is in the right temperature range. Great video, thanks much.

If your transmission doesn't have a dipstick then yes it's done as I did it in the video. It's easier if your scan tool has the transmission temperature but it can be done with an infared thermometer too.

I have a 2000 trooper with blown trans, replaced it with 1999, ( everyone said they are all the same trans. ) only to find wiring harness and case at wiring not comparable.. ugh. Can not find any shop willing or capable to rebuild original 2000 trans. Help

Honestly for me AC is easy. I replaced the compressor in my 98 Trooper. I'm AC capable as I have a recovery system to capture the freon and filter and reuse it. With that said if you had a slow leak and the system is empty then this is the perfect time to do your orings. I use the green Viton type as they are made specifically for the chemicals in freon. Most orings can be accessed by simply removing a 10mm or 12mm nut or bolt at each connection including the compressor. Then either fill it yourself or take it to a competent shop. Again I have all the equipment to inject the correct amount of PAG oil and I use a scale to weigh my freon. Hope this helps you.

@@ricardoavelar6146 I wish I had the answer you want but unfortunately I don't. That is 1 of the hardest compressor replacement jobs I have ever done and I had the power steering pump off and half the front of the engine. It was in there in such a way that I modified half the crap before I put the new one in. I even had to cut down a 14mm wrench. It's possible to get to the orings but a real pain in the ass. You may still have to losen the compressor to get them out. I actually replaced both of the lines all the way to the connection by the firewall on the driver's side.

Rob nice video. Ehat was wrongvwith your tod. My 03 axiom wont go into tod. When i turn the knob it stsrys blinking as it should but then all the green tod lights should come on the indicator shoeing its engaged. It just keeps blinking.itcwas bslky a few years ago, replaced cracked vac line at the tod motor and it was fine for a while. Now it is not. And then tod error light may come on. Any thoughts. 138k miles, owned new, well cared for. Troopers are great, built like a bank vault. Thanks. Ken

@@robbo6460 oh too bad. I worked for isuzu for iver 20 years in new englad. Drove so many, including some prototypes, the rhd vx i had for a while. Had many vx demos. I have a 2000 rideo, 03 axiom and 05 08 ascenders. Any idea, was my tod issue same as your trooper. What sensor? Did your scan tool help.maybe mune is the small axle motor?

I have a 98 and 02 Trooper. The 98 has been fine. I bought the 02 with a bad transmission. Generally speaking Isuzu guys hate this transmission. They prefer a manual transmission. Me? I have no issues. Your mileage may vary tho

When I removed the transmission fluid filter it was full of old torn gaskets. I clean it out and fixed it back but the car is not moving. It jerks to move back but doesn't go but doesn't do anything at all when on forward shift. The sub is not moving both front and reverse.what is the problem?

Wow. I'm not a transmission guy but I would check a few things before condemning the transmission. I would drop the pan again and pull the filter again for anything else in there. I would also pull the shift solenoids and see if anything is in the passages. This feels like your best option to me. If the system ran dry because the pickup was blocked then your plates are most likely burnt. If that's the case your looking at a rebuild unfortunately. Join the Isuzu Mafia on Facebook and post your question again for them. There is also a guy who rebuilds them and swaps them out for you. It's cheaper then a transmission shop because you pull yours and install the rebuilt one. Hopefully my first suggestion shows a clogged valve or passage and it's a simple fix.

Which is the a and b solenoids when you drop the pan..i got a code this morning but no light said solenoid a was basically bad because it acted like it didn't wanna really go so i took off the pos.battery cable reset the computer and drives as it should i have a 99 honda passport 3.2

Peter, after digging out my service manual the A solenoid is the one closer to the corner.... the B solenoid is just to the right of the A solenoid. I hope this makes sense. By corner I mean corner of the valve body. They look exactly alike and are held in by a pin that you simply pull down. Good luck.

At 4:20 of the video you will see the solenoids. The yellowish one in the left corner is A and the one to the right of it is B.

That's a tough one. It could be any number of issues and should be looked at locally by a qualified mechanic

Yes. It's a good chance your fluid is low. When it gets hot it expands. Follow the fill procedure in the video.
