Won 32k on war emblem and proud citizen! Play it every year. After 911 I looked at the field and said we are at war with the terrorists (picked war emblem) and the terror attack has made us all proud citizens so I put the 2 in a reverse exacta for 100.00 so that was 25 2 dollar tickets on either finishing 1 or 2 . Both went off around 25 to 1! Was driving to Boston from Ct. to pickup my son from college after I golfed and picked up the telecast on radio about 50 miles from bean town. The station asked Tom Brady who he liked and he said War Emblem and I smiled cuz I'm a Pats fan! When they left the gate 1 2 I said I'm screwed that never holds up, yet all around the track war emblem held serve with proud citizen gamely hanging on. Favorites made charges at the end but war emblem drew away and I thought proud citizen will fade. As war crossed the finish line I figured one of the favs overtook proud citizen remember I was listening on the car radio but at the end of the rave about War Emblem winning the announcer goes Proud Citizen second and I think I went through the toll booth without paying! My joy was uncontrollable! When they finally gave the price the exacta was 1379!

I was there and made the same bet for a friend, $10 box exacta. I told the agent I wanted $20 figuring the box would be double but she said I owed $40. So I stupidly had her cancel and only make it for total $20. The race was called by my old friend from our youth in Buffalo NY, Luke Kruytbosch. We were supposed to meet up afterward but he went to one side of town and we went to the other (to the home of another Buffalo friend, John Harasty, who was at the time the head chef at Churchill Downs), both promising to meet up again soon. Unfortunately, Luke died some years later. :-(

I paid rent and didn't bet. I had War Emblem, my friend had Proud Citizen. I had everything written down to take $160 to the track, Should have done it. That piece of paper turned $160 into $34k (I had the tirfectas picked too). Would have been life changing. That's why I have had at least $140 in every year since.

I was lucky enough to be there at Belmont to see war emblem go for the triple crown

Does anyone notice the similarities War Emblem and Sunday Silence have? 1. Both won the Derby and Preakness 2. Both are either Brown or Black 3. They ran with a green shadow roll 4. And they have similiar face markings

War Emblem was such a one dimensional horse. If he wasn't on the lead and had to stalk he wouldn't be a threat. His stumble out of the gate at the Belmont caused him to have a bad start and get a lot of dirt in his face behind other horses and he was already an irritable horse to begin with it wasn't a recipe for success that day.

@MrPhoenix30 Ferdinand was sent to race in Japan, when he retired he was put out to stud. He was a failure as a stud, and in Japan horse meat is a common food source. He was slaughtered yes, but he wasn't just sent to japan to be slaughtered...some people make things more dramatic than need be. (No i don't think it's right, it's just fact)

First one I remember too. I'm not a mega horse racing fan by any means but this got me hooked on the Derby

War Emblem was a great horse. We'll never know if his front-running style would have been enough to win the Belmont, since he almost fell down when the starting gate opened. Another Bob Baffert success story.

War Emblem was not slaughtered. He is as far as I know doing a little bit better at stud. I think he also produced a few stakes winners. It was a very sad thing that happened to Ferdinand. Hope they have buy back clauses for the horses sent overseas.

I actually agree with you. As much as I love horses ( in terms of racing I love hearing the thundering of the hooves), I think the horses are only raced for the money and the fame. Once the horse is done racing and depending on how good the horse has run, the owners get rid of the horse. I've seen how disappointed the owners are when their horse loses. It's all about the value of the horse and the money thats involved. WITH ALL DO RESPECT TO ALL PEOPLE WHO LOVE RACING.
