One of the best Derby's I've seen in years. Loved seeing those Western Cowboy hats in the winner's circle and finding out the trainer is from Bloomfield, CO, an hour from my hometown, Durango, CO. Exciting stuff!! Especially when the announcer didn't even say which horse was coming on to take the lead till he had it by several lengths. Amazing jockey too!!! LOVE IT

It was the fact that MTB was a couple of lengths ahead before Durkin even NOTICED he was in the lead that is so hard to fathom.."That is, uhh,Mine That Bird...." I've seen announcers even in routine races become so focused on the favorites , they lose sight (literally) of other horses.

+schum256 - it was 25:17, his slowest of the race other than his preceding quarter. SB Nation has Derby stats from 1980 to 2011; MTB's splits fit in well with those of other winners. His strong late drive illustrates, for me at least, the fact that the Thoroughbred industry has been churning out many more speed horses than distance runners over the past - ? few decades, perhaps? - I'm no expert. The horses out in front had to be *very* tired, it seems to me. I'll probably never understand what "tells" a jockey when he "has plenty of horse," and when he needs to slow the pace, if he's able to, to conserve his horse's energy.
@schumi246
@schumi246 9 жыл бұрын
Actually, 25.17 is the difference of when Join in the Dance hit the 1/4 pole, and Mine That Bird finished, he was still multiple lengths behind at the 1/4 pole, and isn't it usually about 4-5 lengths a second??

What makes Secretariat's run in the KD is not just that he had the fastest KD in history..but that he started in LAST position & then set the track record by increasing his speed the entire race from the OUTSIDE of the track. When he won, only 1 horse was within 10 lengths of him. Sham set the 2nd, now 3rd, fastest KD time in history. Sec's speed is unimaginable. He is the ONLY athlete in the world's history to INCREASE his speed throughout an entire race to set a record. No human ever has.

This win makes me cry. But horse racing is a cruel business (not a sport) and its not a happy lot to be born a thoroughbred. Most thoroughbreds (70+% of the foal crop in any given year) will eventually go to slaughter - Ferdinand and Exceller are prime examples. Racing is about money and exploiting athletes and it's shameful. I own an OTTB because she almost shipped to slaughter. I bought her to save her.
@LivMightystarstarstableonline
@LivMightystarstarstableonline 10 жыл бұрын
I agree. Horse racing can be very cruel. Horses die every day from being run to hard. As a horse lover when I see things like that it just makes me SICK! Who, who in their right mind would kill a horse to race it? You may not even win. Is it for the fun? I'm not sure.. I hate horse racing, though. Crops, whips, abuse.
@circe9165
@circe9165 10 жыл бұрын
If you hate horse racing so much, then why even bother watching it? While it is terrible for any horse to go to slaughter, Thoroughbreds are by far the minority. Their numbers should continue to decrease since the foal crop sizes have dropped vastly. The current crop of 3yos is approximately 25,000, less than half of what it was in the late 80s. The majority are horses sent to slaughter are Quarter Horses, since there are approximately 150,000 registered each year, and foals that are the results of backyard breeders. Sure some horses slip through the cracks but far less than used to. As sad as the deaths of Exceller and Ferdinand were, their deaths have brought about positive changes. Most stallions sold to other countries now have clauses included in their sales contracts that say the horse will be shipped back to the US upon retirement or pensioning from stud duties. Exceller was owned by an evil man. People tried to save him, including the farm where he was standing but the man refused to let him live. Its hard to blame a whole industry for some bad apples. Many tracks have instituted rules to ban trainers and owners who sell horses to slaughter. As for the whips, there are rules for use and misuse. A jockey will be suspended and fined for misuse. Racing is a business and a sport. So as with any business, it is about money. But there are far more good people in the industry than there are bad ones.
@nbe1951
@nbe1951 10 жыл бұрын
Fay Fisher You do not know what you are talking about. In any given year 20+% of the horses that go to slaughter are thoroughbreds. And, 70% of the foal crop of all thoroughbreds eventually go to slaughter. Considering that the numbers that are going to slaughter have not decreased, these are very significant numbers and indicate that thoroughbreds remain a part of the overbreeding circumstance (human greed drives this machine, dontcha know). It ain't grand to be born a TB. And, yes, I did rescue one from slaughter.
@nbe1951
@nbe1951 10 жыл бұрын
***** Hi there. I am quite well versed on the sad state of affairs when it comes to the world of the thoroughbred. There are too many TBS, and it is the fault of humans who breed irresponsibly. Surely you have heard of the expression that "it takes ten foals to get three good ones." The seven that don't make the cut are doomed a little sooner and a little more completely than their theoretically more desirable counterparts. Racing is the soft white underbelly of the horse world.

What a great run! what a move to the rail on the end of the final turn. it opened up perfectly! To see that move was unbelieveable at that distance to have that burst! Caught the announcer totally by surprise! Too bad NBC's coverage is so shoddy. They cover such a great even with just 4 cameras, none on the back stretch. A pacing camera, like the 1 NBC invented for track meets, from the final turn down to the finish would have caught this awesome move by an incredible longshot to win!

Yes, the announcer totally blew the call. He was excitedly proclaiming Pioneer of the Nile as Mine that Bird took the lead. Maybe he wasn't even watching. My guess is with those odds, most announcers wouldn't have know who he was either. To come from so far down to pass the entire field so quickly, this is a horse with a HUGE heart and a genius of a rider.

Tom Durkin made up for this "missed" call by making a brilliant race call in the following Preakness (2009) Stakes, which in my opinion is one of the most exciting race calls ever. You can't blame Durkin too much for this call because he was following the front end of the race and MTB appeared out of nowhere from last place...Durkin had to pause and think for the name of the horse because he had been completely out of the race just moments before. Durkin is still the best race caller.

do they have gps or whatever on the horses to see who's in what position? i see it in on nascar races, with the thought bubble and the position the car is in. install it on the riders helmets.

0:56 look how far back "mine that bird" was, this horse is a legend. Must have a huge heart!! Too bad the commentary was jumpy im sure the caller would have been annoyed with his performance.

HE WAS LIKE 25 lengths back. and he was a 50-1 longshot. NOBODY expected him to win.

1:36 (when the announcer says Chocolate Candy) You can see him move up fast on the inside close to the rail. He then moves between two other horses to get into the "lane" so to speak that he uses until they are completly around the far turn. Then he just steps on the gas and runs diagnal back to the rail, passing everyone.

the funniest thing of the race was the announcer, he get excited everytime he saw one of the favorites and didnt saw Mine That Bird until he become the leader :p

When he zips into the rail there, you really get a sense of how small this horse is as he just appears seemingly out of nowhere behind horses...
