I just picked up a 2002 Protege 5 speed with 95,000 miles. I looked up the EPA mpg ratings and thought 28 mpg hwy seemed awful low for a 2.0 liter 5 speed car of this size. I topped the tank off and drove 100 miles at 60 mph. To my surprise the car got 38 mpg! That's driving 100 miles, refueling at the same pump and calculating the miles driven by gallons of fuel to top the tank back up. Not bad at all.

Update: donated the 19 year old P5 last week due to McPherson strut failure. 15 yrs earlier I'd replaced that very same unit! Got a Honda Fit. Not a bad car, just not a Mazda Protege5!

I own one of these little bombs! Bought it in 2002! Still own it! 115,000 miles later! It used to be fast. Not so fast now. It used to corner well. Still does, with care. Leather seats. Sunroof. Tiptronic transmission! Fun to drive is just the start. It's also able to hold a lot of stuff! One of these days I've got to sell it, or just give it to some guy, or gal. Ok. Let's do it - tomorrow!

I think the headlight is fogged on the inside, which means there can be a (small) leak in the casing. Also, indeed the bumper appears not to be standard Protege 5, and it's also different from the European front bumper...

Got this car and I love it, it's the best car I have ever driven and its pretty fast to but it's amazing in the corners. plus loads of leg room I'm 6'1 and theres still tons of space to move the seat back.

Yall sayin its a bad cR are wrong its actually a really good car i have the 2002 mazda mp5 lx 5 speed and it runs great has lots of room on the inside its actually a fairly fast car for the low horsepower and if your trying to soupe one up they are fsirly cheap to do so but high speed corner taking is not their forte almost slid across the road out course i was going pretty fast to o but over all good reliable car

change tho oil at least evry 5,000zack lamb Change the transmission lube,get a KN air cleaner..... 3-4 times a year ,high pressure spray wash the underside of the car, wax it once a year after a good wash.
