This broadcast kicks off with Van Halen and Metallica. AB and BP in the booth together. Gen 4 cars. Growling engines. Pepe Le Pew and the gang on the cars, and in the pits. Drivers wearing sleek mirror shades. Pontiac and Dodge on track. So many talented drivers. Full coverage of qualifying, and fans in the stands, on pit road, and in the infield. Winston as the title sponsor. A jet black sealant track. Sponsor longevity with recognizable colors on the cars. No Bull 5 Million Dollar contender cars. So much nostalgia... I really miss these days, man.

One driver in this race that had a thrilling weekend was Jeff Green. One of the fastest cars in practice, qualified 29th, and ended up getting a 3rd place finish.

There is that Bugs Bunny paint job, the paint job was supposed to have run but Jeff crashed the car in practice and at such short notice, the had to roll out Jeff Gordon's plain flames back-up car. If I recall, Jeff left the race early with an engine failure and didn't run all that many laps. Probably one of the worst race weekends for Jeff, but it happens to the great ones sooner or later.

That crash was practice was caused by a stuck throttle, which is about the most terrifying way to crash at a flat oval like Richmond. And yes, Jeff blew the engine in a race where he potentially could have made up 100+ points to Sterling Marlin. 2002 was a year of "what-ifs" for Jeff, where it wasn't his strongest year yet more than strong enough to be a contender.

Man what an effort by Dave Blaney, all the way to 3rd in the backup car. Nice!
