Flashing "D" with noticeable hesitation in shifting. Drained/refilled 3.5 qts tranny fluid and changed both the 3 & 4 pressure switches. This fixed my problem.

Hi Andrew, I noticed the drive green light flashing on my 2004 Pilot, I used a friend's scanner and came back with 4th pressure switch code. After watching your video, do you recomend to change both 3rd and 4th pressure switches even if the error code is only for the 4th? will the 3rd eventually fail also? Thank you for your informative video.
@andrewlewis70255 жыл бұрын
I would just replace the one in question. Remember to drain and fill the fluid if it has not been done in a while. Old fluid can clog the passage ways in the shift sensors, especially the new one.

Hopefully you still check your account, do you know if this would help with a 2003 Honda Pilot that misses 3rd gear? Drives fine but if you don’t let off when it shifts to 3rd gear it’ll just rev out until you slow down enough to kick back into 2nd or skip entirely to 4th. Sometimes it’ll actually shift into 3rd on its own too

Thanks for this video! Having the same symptoms. How are the 3rd party brand sensors working out after a few months?

I did end up replacing 1 0f the 2 sensors. Got a flashing D last week. Thought that finally after 243 k miles, the original tranny was winding down. Had to take to dealer for the diagnosis. Ended up being the 4th sensor again. Went ahead and bought one from the dealer so I could fix it same day. My dealer charged around $80. Found Honda OE sensors on line for around $50. The other 3rd party sensor is holding up. Kind of a gamble unfortunately.

I am not a mechanic, and I am also a visual learner, and I’m wondering if I can use your video as a guide on this thing because I am in dire straits here. I can’t find much information, and I’m hoping that the parts you used here will work on my van.

I believe that’s the 4th shift position switch/sensor. Look that up online to confirm a part number. There are cheap ones ($30-$40), but the quality is a role of the dice. I had good luck with mine. Should be the same repair as in the video. Not a difficult job. Have your part in hand, then make sure you have the appropriate socket. You can do it!

Okay so like 6 months ago or so i watched this video and replaced the 3rd gear switch. Now i am having the code for 4th. HOWEVER when i found & bought the part for the 3rd it showed how the piece worked for the 2nd & 3rd gear switch. But i am finding no where the same piece that says 4th. I keep seeing "transmission oil switch", ia that the same thing i need? Or a completely different part? I have been calling & searching for almost 2hrs and i feel lost. The 3rd gear one was SO much easier to find than this 4th one. Someone help me please 😭😭

Great video! Do you know where to find the reverse transmission pressure switch/shift solenoid? My 2007 pilot sometimes shifts into reverse perfectly. Other times the reverse shift isn't so smooth. The gears just grind for a few seconds until the gear thuds loudly into place. Even if the shift to reverse happens smoothly sometimes when backing up, the car will drop out of gear and grind again. Turning the car of and trying to shift again sometimes fixes the problem and the shift to reverse will happen smoothly without indication of any problem. All other shifting is working fine.
@andrewlewis70256 жыл бұрын
From what I have researched, sometimes doing a drain (approx 3.5) qts and replace of tranny fluid can fix problem. I have also seen a shift solenoid on top of tranny, just below battery, and to the left of the tranny dip stick. 6 bolts hold it in place. This shift solenoid malfunctioning (due to possible clogging), can affect shifting and I believe shifting into reverse. Basically, it all comes down to transmission fluid, and appropriate circulation of that transmission fluid. I'm just a DIYer, so I would call a tranny shop for a more positive diagnosis. Good luck..

@andrewlewis70255 жыл бұрын
If the fluid has less 30k miles and looks CLEAN, I would not drain and refill. If its looks dark, or dirty, I would change it. I ended up getting 252k miles on my original tranny before I sold my 05 pilot to get a 15 MDX.. I have been told that is longer than expected. I did install a tranny cooler on it around 95k miles, which I am convinced helped, coupled with drain and refill tranny every 30 - 40 k miles. If you are planning on keeping pilot as long as I did, buy a case of honda tranny fluid on line. It's a good bit cheaper. Should get you through 3 drain and refills.

@andrewlewis70255 жыл бұрын
Usually the "flashing D" will cease with the switch/solenoid change. Disconnecting the neg terminal to the battery for a short time can reset check a engine light. If you still have a flashing D after you replaced solenoid, then you still have an issue. In some cases, the tranny is done.

How much damage can you cause if you drive with this bad. Only one vehicle for now , waiting for part to come in
@andrewlewis70254 жыл бұрын
Depends on how bad the shifting. Those sensors tell the the computer when to shift. As long as you don’t drive too hard it while it’s struggling to shift, you should be ok for a little while. Eventually it wont shift into the higher gears, and you will stuck driving 20-30mph.

Is this the same for a 2005 Honda Pilot. Draind the TF already worked than flashing D came back on..
@andrewlewis70255 жыл бұрын
This video was on a 2005 pilot. When you drain tranny fluid, the recommendation is to drain and fill x3. Drain, then drive a few days, Drain, drive few days, and final drain and fill. This replaces approx 90 plus % of the old fluid. After that, replace which ever shift sensor is causing the problem. It's not a guaranteed fix for a neglected tranny, but usually is the first thing to try. I did this 2 different times during the time I owned mine, and got 252 k miles on original tranny before I sold it.

@andrewlewis70253 жыл бұрын
Dealership had separate part numbers. I would assume they aren’t same. Probably a computer ID thing. When it comes to electronic items, I start with deal first to assure correct part numbers. Since it’s more than likely a DENSO part, you can go to their website and search the DENSO part number. A lot of times it’s cheaper. Good luck.

Can these two sensors mess with reverse?
@2thebestsport8395 жыл бұрын
When I drive in the freeway for 30 or so , my pilot started jerking and got stuck it seems on 3rd gear I used a code reader to erase the check engine light out and the transmission reseted and i can drive again. That has happened twice and notice I was driving at 70+ miles/hr. What you guy think?
@andrewlewis70255 жыл бұрын
Usually when the tranny starts acting up, it’s either wearing out, or it’s has dirty tranny fluid. Usually every 40 k miles, you are supposed to change the fluid. This can be achieved by a drain and fill x3 ( approx 90% + changed). If you think it’s the #3 shift sensor, at least drain and fill once, then change the sensor. If this fixes the problem, I would drive a few days, drain and fill, then repeat one more time to get your x3 drain and fills. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s worth a try.

@@doneadiizua76 they key is clean tranny fluid. 98 - 03 were problematic for Honda. Our 03 Odyssey tranny was failing at 120k miles. When I got an 05 pilot (@ 95k miles) I immediately did the “drain and fill x3”. Repeated that every 40k miles. Sold the pilot with approximately 250k miles on it. Those early 2000 trannys are hit or miss. Our dealership gave a decent discount buying a case of transmission fluid at a time. Takes a case to do the drain and fill x3. @andrewlewis70256 жыл бұрын
From what I have researched, P1740 usually (not 100%) can be fixed by replacing the 4th pressure switch and performing a tranny fluid DRAIN. If problem continues, may be time for a new tranny. Refer to your local honda dealer to verify your part number, search part number on line. My dealer was almost double the cost of on-line sites. Good luck

@andrewlewis70255 жыл бұрын
I would only change the failed part. It's easy enough to access and change the other part when it fails. I had to have the dealership use their computer/scanner to diagnose which shift sensor was bad ($60). OBD readers at most local parts shops wont diagnose tranny sensors. If you are planning on keeping your honda for a while, get a quality part.
