This is a common problem with these engines. I bought mine with 77,000+ miles 10 years ago. I heard about this issue about 5 years after I got it. I keep oil clean to the point that I can read the dipstick clearly. I ran a quick lube for 7 years and most cars the oil would look like mine after an oil change. It has almost 220,000 now and , knock wood, is still going. Keep your engine clean inside and out and it will last much, much longer.

@re3rocks69 That's possible too as a lack of proper lubrication spells certain death for an engine.

My guess would be over revving or that the parts were not installed correctly. It's strange because everything looks so new inside there. P.S. get used to difficult disassemblies I'm sure it won't be the first time. Good luck in school.

you know it all boils down to proper driving and care

Looks like the hydraulic lifters/tappets failed by seizing up and being stuck in the collapsed position allowing play in the rocker and eventually allowing the rocker to fall out. Older Dodge Dakotas in the same year with the 4.7l's have a similar OHC hydraulic lifter and rocker design and have fixed this issue many times.

Poor workmanship. I see this with Ecotec engines 4.2s are basically their bigger brothers. Causes? 1) Getting Cheap and reusing a weak valve spring, worn lifters, bent or worn valve, or valve guides keepers & retainers. 2) Not properly testing and inspecting parts especially valve springs and their keepers. 3) Improper cleaning and assembly, not using assembly lube, or per-oiling during assembly. add reving the tits off the engine to a poor build and its Chernobyl time.

does the factory have a line for camshats

That’s easy the 4.2 inline 6 is infamous for burning oil and once ya burn a quart of oil the priorty oiling design makes sure oil goes to the mains and the rockers start to seize up an break off it’s pretty common believe it or not it wouldn’t be if people would check there oil once a week but these motors make good power great for towing smaller trailers an great for large families but horrible on gas. Oh not to mention the vvt solenoid always quits working am stops sending oil to the cam phaser so ya add that with low oil the top end gets damn near no oil

is there also a new oil sender

Were you ever able to figure this out? Im with EricTheCarGuy, it looks so new inside that engine like it was recently remanned or it was a newer engine that wasnt put together properly

true my trail blazer onley has 70 k on it and lives on mobil 1 oil but my uses 0 oil between its oil changes

I understand that diagnosis. However I think it was from lack of proper oil changes, because I have beat the piss out of one of those engines and had no issues. When I say beat the piss out of it, I mean like started it a cold fall morning and then putting it to the floor until it got to 105mph and then holding it there for about 2 miles. 105mph is about 5500RPM also.

THATS A QUICK TEST ALRIGHT , THE STAY TOGETHER NEVER TEST !!!! TO BE TOTALLY HONEST THIS 4.2L WAS NOT A CHEVY ENGINE ITS AN IZUZU , I HAVE A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING WHY CHEVROLET HAS THE NEW INTRO 2002 TRAILBLAZER WITH NO ENGINE , OF ALL THE MILLIONS OF IN- LINE SIX’S THEY MADE IN DECADES IT WAS CHEAPER TO OUT SOURCE THE ENGINE , DON’T GET ME WRONG THE IZUZU ENGINE IS A GREAT MOTOR , HOWEVER AS THE MILEAGE KREEPS UP THINGS START TO FAIL WITH HEAT AND AGE , ABUSE AND LACK OF MAINTENANCE !!!!

Rockers weren't installed properly, weak valve springs or a tight valve guide.
