Bought a blower fan resister and didn't fix my fan. I'd hit a bump and fan would stop blowing. Clicked on your video and watched you move the tilt steering up and my fan came on. Thanks great video. Now I know where to go from here

Your video save me about $650 off what the dealership wanted. They wanted to replace the switch, blower motor and blower motor resistor. I knew the blower motor was fine, because I could jiggle and hold the key tumbler just right and get the AC to blow cold air as fast as I wanted. I bought a switch off of Rock Auto and replaced it in about 20 minutes for about $30 or so. Thanks.

I considered the ignition switch after replacing the control module. After running across this video I went out and put the key in it and shook it around and still nothing. Then, I tilted the wheel and it came on. Tilted the wheel back up and it shut off. Either it is the ignition switch or the connection to it, but either way I will take it apart and replace the switch and connectors as needed. Appreciate this video! 2004 Dodge Ram Motor Blower

Thanks for the instructions. Since I had my center dash apart, I thought I left a plug loose for fan control... until I found this video. I did the AutoZone part - # LS1144. 30 bucks or so. No major surprises. Keeping the screws straight - which ones go where - is kind of important. Removing the switch from the harness required sliding two locking mechanisms - I missed that in the vid. I had rotate the switch position with a flat blade screwdriver to be in the same position as the one I pulled. I took my old switch apart and saw no obvious issues. I'd bet that some clearances on plastic parts becomes a little out of spec with wear. Thanks! University of KZbin makes us all more effective.

This video has saved me time and alot of cash. This fault in design with with the ignition switch appears to be quite common after reading all the posts. Without this video I would have had no clue as to finding the cause of this problem or how to fix it. The ignition switch cost me $23.00 at CARQUEST auto parts. I'm sure this fix would have cost hundreds of dollars at the dealership. I would have had to have left my truck and missed work.This was a 20 min. fix, thanks for you video.

Thank you for this very helpful video.We went last winter with no heat in Canada BURRRRR! . I changed the blower controller just before last winter underneath the dash on the passengers side twice.The first time it all worked for about a week then it melted together with the plug.Turned out the plug wires were loose had to change the plug and wires under there as well. The second time I fixed that proper with a new controller ( AGAIN ) and a plug with new wires after soldering all the 4 plug wires very well.Then wile I was attaching the new unit it worked on a test then when I was finished soldering and put it back in NOTHING ARRRRRGGGG ! Then I found that moving the key made the blower turn off and on but that even stopped after a while driving while holding the key in the exact spot really was lame and did not last long till even doing that did not work.The guy at the garage wanted $ 250 to change this ignition switch. Thanks to your help I bought the part for 50 bucks ( CANADIAN PARTS WE PAY TWICE AS MUCH AS Y'ALL ) explain that? I followed your instructions and an hour later it now works like a dream ! Thank You !

I want to thank you for your EXCELLENT video... it just saved me a ton of work and expense! I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van and this ignition switch was the problem. The procedure was virtually identical to the one you show for your 2003 truck. Your video is simple, concise and easy to follow. Apparently this is a very common problem in Dodges over numerous years/models. It's a damn shame they can get away with perpetuating crap parts like this. Thank you again for your help... it's nice to have heat again! :)

I have a 2004 RAM 2500 however, all the pieces and parts look very similar. I was convinced at first it was a shorted/grounded wire in the harness. As I watched this it made perfect sense as the problem was intermittent at first and then the blower just stopped working. Thanks Much. Going to the parts store now!

Finally!!!! It worked!!! I never had an intermittent fan, but dead. I never bought a new one just made the contacts connect by making them a U shaped with pliers. A new one may not do the trick if the female ends are too worn. If this doesn't work, you can remove the fan with three screws and test it to a battery. If the fan works, check fuses.
@justinbarnes54982 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. My blower motor became intermittent, then stopped altogether. I had low voltage at the blower motor connector (7.5V) - did some digging and realized that many have had the same issues, but oddly enough relating to the ignition switch modules. I got mine apart (thanks to your video) - and found severe scarring on the top two pins (blower motor). The female blue connector in the dash also was charred in that area, so I was concerned that it would not reconnect solidly when installing the new ignition module. Bought and installed the new module, and it worked, however after a few minutes began to intermittently die off. When adjusting the tilt wheel, I could make it come on and off. What a horrible designed location for this part. Now I think this new unit will most likely not have a great connection due to the movement of the steering column (and other vibrations) - and start to overheat again, thus taking me back to square one. Ughh,

It got progressively worse until the blower would not work at all regardless of the amount of wiggling. Replaced switch and blower works just fine. Gotta love those Chrysler electrical engineers. Instead of powering heavy loads with a relay like a sane person would, they chose to be mavericks and run it through the ignition switch with a half dozen other circuits. I imagine my hands would be around their throats within minutes yelling "DIDN'T YOU TAKE A GOD DAMNED BASIC ELECTRONICS CLASS!!!??? WHAT IN THE HELL MADE YOU THINK THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA? Thanks for the video, it seems to have cleared up the issues I had(blower would turn on when truck was on). There is one thing I would like to note in my experience. I had to take my key and rotate the new ignition switch section where it mates up to the ignition cylinder (not sure of verbiage, hopefully it makes sense). The plastic insert was slightly rotated compared to the switch I pulled out of the truck so the new switch would not mate up to the lock cylinder properly until it was turned.

@greenrumour11 жыл бұрын
Hey Glen, I would agree the fan could be dragging and causing a higher than normal current draw. However the connector to the ignition switch must be in good shape to rule out that as a possibility. If you look into the terminals and they are charred than they should be replaced. If the wires have burned to a hard crisp just past the connector than its possible it is too crusty to make a clean contact and the entire section should be replaced. OEM cord has plug at each end. Replace bad switch.

Ami problema. Me ayudas. ??

The short answer is yes. A bad wire harness and or ignition switch could cause the vehicle to fail to start. All contacts to the switch and the switch reeds themselves must be in working order for the various components to function. That includes the starter and the ECM power.

Javier I'm sorry your having this difficulty. There are several components that get the power through the switch you changed. When you removed the switch you probably noticed the burnt wire connector. This could be the problem. That 2 foot section of wire harness is replaceable. The fan motor can be bad If its a bad motor sometimes it can be jolted into temporarily working by pounding on it with the palm of your hand or a rubber mallet. The plug going to the fan can be melted or over heated. be sure to check it for blackend connectors. Also if the steering column affects the fan motor, there is a short wiring harness from the ignition switch to the main harness that can also have over heated check it for bad contacts as well.

May be ignition switch. this is a very inexpensive easy to do item that may help and won't hurt to eliminate that as a possibility. Alternatively, Regarding Dodge 3500 vans. @greenrumour9 жыл бұрын
Hey David sorry your having the same issues as the rest of us. In your case it sounds as if the blower motor has possibly failed which mine has done as well. I was able to give the motor a wack with the tip of my boot or the palm of my hand and it would start up again. That is far too annoying so I just went to Napa and swapt it out for a cool hundred. The ignition switch has failed again as well even with a new fan motor. It is a lifetime switch so no big deal but now I am going to put a 40 amp relay in the circuit so it takes the brunt of the load off of the poorly designed ignition switch. Check your power at the fan if its there its the fan if not it could be the control switch or the wiring harness. The ignition switch could still be the culprit if its a bad one. Try hard turning it a couple of times. Quick flip rotate the key just before start. that might get the bad switch to slap a contact.

Today I turned the AC on and all of a sudden smoke started coming out of the column. Turned it off and drove home. Tested and again it started to smoke. This time I was watching for it and saw a quick spark somewhere up in the column. Now the blower motor does not work. Truck runs, along with everything else I tested. Do you think this is the same issue and the ignition switch is the culprit?

its likely the same issue or the ignition switches wiring harness.

Sorry... couldn't figure out how to edit my post below. I took the fan out and the resistor. They both checked out fine. I cleaned the squirrel cage. I did nothing to the resister. I noticed some burnt junk and fuzz on the blower motor electrical connector. I cleaned that up. Turned the key...its working fine on all speeds. I guess the real test will be towing 8000 lbs through the hot Florida sun or baking in some shadeless parking lot. Also, I also looked at the wire going to the fan, it looks sufficient IMHO: about #10 or #12.

Could this switch eventually stop the truck from starting?

I have same problem on 2003 but when I lift up steering wheel, fan works. It just doesn’t work when it’s in lower position. You think Still need to change switch?
@greenrumour9 ай бұрын
good chance the switch is cooked but the switch is connected to a wiring harness that goes through the column and has a second plug just past the dash coming out of the column this harness needs checked out because it is common to have burnt contacts as well

Thanks...fixed my fan (it was staying on) did you worry about the spades getting that hot and damaging the plug (female spades) ?

I'm about to buy a truck and want to know if this will work if the fan works when the truck is shut off, and not when running?
@greenrumour8 жыл бұрын
yes it can weld the contacts together inside the switch and fan can stay on.

Both the ignition switch and wiring harness were burnt. I replaced both of them. Now it comes on and stays on like it should but it only blows cold air when truck is moving. When you stop at lights it blows hot air. Any suggestions on what might be the issue ?

Sorry it took so long to reply. It sounds like your low on water in the radiator to me.
@greenrumour7 жыл бұрын
Actually I miss read your question and thought it was warm when driving not cool so its in reference to your AC not your heater. So now my answer is it may be that your Freon is low or possibly the condenser fan is not working. Check the wiring and plug behind the radiator on the cooling fan. Mine was found to be completely shredded one time and needed rewired and a new plug end installed. Good luck.

Yes at first I thought it may need Freon. It was a little low so I added some. I still had the same issue and thought I might be leaking Freon. When I tried to add more it showed that it was full' I just went and started my truck and turned on the A/C. The fan was not spinning. So I'm thinking maybe that is the issue. Do I have to replace the whole fan or is there something else that could be causing it not to work ?

Ok sir I just found out that the condenser fan has a loose connection. When I wiggled the wires it come on but will not stay on. How can I fix this issue.
@jackmezzell41147 жыл бұрын
One other thing when I wiggle the wires going to the condenser the fan comes on but it isn't spinning as fast as I think it should spin. I'm not sure if that's because it has a bad connection or fan is wore out.

Would a faulty ignition switch also effect door locks from not working?
@greenrumour8 жыл бұрын
Its possible. However the door lock master on the drivers side has a tendency to get cold solder joints. There are videos showing the removal and repair is simply solder the cracked or discolored solder points on the circuit board.
