In this video we take a 2003 Passat and move the front end into “service mode.” This makes it easier to complete certain repairs to the front of the engine, cooling, and air condition system.

I wasn't sure of how to get my car in service mode to replace the timing belt. You showed me bolt for bolt how its done. Thank you sir for saving me lots of time and busted knuckles. Keep up the great work.

Def not 9-12”, more like 3-4” but not as hard as I was expecting. I’m realizing German engineering looks hard but is easier when you know the right steps (of course not always true). Appreciate the video🙌🏼

I've done this. Its hanging on lines and wires, you can get upto 12" if you move those out of the way.

Should’ve left the Turbo crossover pipe bolt in on each side and you forgot to use long bolts to support the core support when it’s loose. Otherwise excellent video.

Is all that required to changed the front motor mount? The one that goes from the engine block to the sub frame.

Yes! However, some can be sneaked out without taking the front off. This one had to be pulled. Thanks so much for watching!

I'm changing that motor mount myself. Forget to say that to the mechanic that changed my timing belt. Oh well, I'm not paying another disassembly just for that stupid thing. Video is great.

Do the back of the support bar that holds the bumper on have a washer on it and if so how important is that washer?
@AutoScholarwithMrB2 жыл бұрын
I believe that the bar mount bolts have a washer that is pressed on the bolt, but it has been so long since I have done one, I can’t be sure. If it does, I would make sure any replacement bolt also has a washer on it. Thanks for watching!

What makes it a b5.5?
@AutoScholarwithMrB3 жыл бұрын
1998 to early 2000 is B5, Late 2000 to early 2005 is what we call a B5.5. Mechanically they are about the same, but they got slightly differing exterior and interior cosmetic modifications. B5.5 is also sometimes called B5 facelift. Thanks for watching!

How the hell can you do a timing belt without completly removing that rad support? You cant even access any of the bolts to the timing covers let alone verify tdc😂
@neonbymoon8 ай бұрын
He’s showing people how to remove the front end to access various parts to replace. His video is by far THE BEST for walking someone step by step through the steps to get as far as he does. He tells you EXACTLY what you can get to at this point, and says these steps are necessary to do x, y, and z. One video I watched said “I removed the alternator, the timing belt, a bunch of hoses, and some other stuff.”- The video was less than 90 seconds. Other videos are so close to the EXACT bolt being removed that it’s impossible to decipher wtf is going on. It is neither helpful nor impressive to make smart-ass comments about “the rod being removed first to get to the timing belt.” A layman can see THE ROD. A layman without guidance will struggle to get this far. Your condescending comment is neither brilliant nor helpful. It tells me you enjoy trolling - and even though I cannot decipher what’s in your head, my guess is you’d like to appear both intelligent and superior. Your comment tells me a completely different story…about a bully who undoubtedly bestows the same love and affection as shown here. This guy, who has students, was quite thorough. For those of us on a budget and in a tough situation, he has the best tutorial out there. Instead of jabbing and laughing like you’ve got it all going on - perhaps post even better tutorials and show the World that you flapping your mouth has actual value- and isn’t lip service. Disappointed to see two “thumbs up” for your snide remarks. Please be a better example for your family and community. Next time, perhaps suggest your own link showing the rest of the steps you enjoyed laughing about. Not impressed. 👎

Must hurt not being mechanically inclined

That’s not service mode. SM is removing the carrier entirely, disconnecting coolant hoses for engine and transmission from the rad, swinging aside the A/C condenser, and finally removing the entire carrier.
@TopGoose-bf1mxАй бұрын
It is service mode. While the manual states that yes, if there is no need to drain said fluids why do it?
@robemail2Ай бұрын
I’ve done the complete timing service and would never be able to do it with coolant in the system. Well, you technically could, but coolant would be all over the floor, instead of in a container, when you replace the thermostat and water pump. Your back would also be incredibly twisted doing the crank seal if it’s bad at that time too. No, service mode requires water and transmission line disconnect. I tried to do it with the transmission lines still connected and you end up waisting time (customer’s money) getting the job done properly.
@hobby_turns_addiction420910 күн бұрын
Sorry your not mechanically inclined enough to do it without removing unnecessary components. Absolutely unnecessary to remove anything past this step to do timing, fans, etc like he stated in the video.
@robemail29 күн бұрын
@@hobby_turns_addiction4209 tell me, genius, how do you replace the water pump without removing the coolant?
@robemail29 күн бұрын
@@TopGoose-bf1mx you need to get a proper service manual. @hobby_turns_addiction4209 Timing work on the V6 requires much more than just the belt. Anything less is a hack and will cause trouble and cost the customer much more money in the long run - it’s not a Honda - German cars require proper maintenance
