i've been watching hockey for a long time and this may be the greatest defense i've ever seen, and yeah a lot of people bitched about these devils and said they had a slow, boring style of play that slowed down and ruined hockey but if you are a true fan you can appreciate how incredible they really were, i mean the 2002-03 devils obviously had no true superstars not on offense anyways but made up for it by being way more than the sum of their parts, by being perfectly discipled, well oiled defensive machine that almost never made mistakes, as far as defense goes this was like the 85 bears of the NHL i mean the ducks could barely get the puck out of their own zone and were lucky to even get a shot off let alone score, which in this game of course they didn't, hockey is truly a system game where a single player can rarely carry a team unless your talking a gretzky, orr or lemieux, or today a connor mcdavid, but mostly its a true team sport and this group def personified team hockey.

Because Giguere was simply a little bit better that year, even though his team ultimately didn't win? He went 15-6 with a 94.5 save percentage, compared to Brodeur with a 16-8 record and a 93.2 save percentage. Anaheim also won 4-0 in games against the defending Cup champions and President Trophy winners Red Wings in the first round, much thanks to his play. In the Conference finals against Minnesota, he also had three straight shutouts, and they won 4-0 in games again. They ran out of gas in game 7 of the Cup finals though, and it finally showed that New Jersey was the better team, but that was an incredible runner up performance.
@TaxmanTV Жыл бұрын
@@patriik0 As true as that is.. extreme deference is giving the MVP to the winning team by default unless it is so incredibly obvious to give it to a losing player. Also remember that the MVP is supposed to be for the entire playoffs, not just first 3 rounds. The stats between Giguere and Brodeur were close enough to merit Marty getting the MVP this time. He also broke the NHL record for most shutouts in a playoff campaign, and 3 in the finals. I'm not at the level to say it was a robbery to give to Gigs, but just feel it was wrong. It's akin to giving the NFL MVP to the losing quarterback. Just doesn't feel right.

Giguere was 90% equipment. Watching him it's an absolute farce. It's beyond Garth Snow level. Seeing how awkward every movement of his is because he's literally wearing a sofa suit. I have never seen a goalie have to move around less than he did. He basically took up 92% of the net at all times and had to lurch here and there to cover up whatever areas his equipment wasnt blocking at the time. You look at that Ducks team and the names being mentioned...Jason Krog. Dan Bylsma, Marc Chouinard, Chistov, Kurt Sauer. Steve Thomas and Oates at 40 and nowhere near the players they used to be trying to squeeze one last gasp out of their careers. 2003 Ducks were a strange team and one that had no business winning a Cup. Not a bad team...just and odd one. Every game their strategy was get outplayed and outshot 42-18, no pucks get through the michelin man and we win 1-0 on some fluke bs goal in the 3rd OT.

But thats the 1 time in my hockey watching life-started 1995-where I thought somebody on the losing team deserved it.Peter Forsberg in 2002 was the other time I thought it was possible.Missed the whole season, came back,& led the playoffs in scoring-despite the Avs not even making the Finals. But after the Avs lost 7-0 in game 7, (& 2-0 in game 6)-that ship sailed. But I dont remember too much controversy over Gugierre back then. But NHL fans from back then,know what Brodeur was all about. Other than Roy-theres no goalie in the last 25 yrs-Id take over Broduer. That includes Hasek,& Belfour-who made life miserable on my Avs.

Not to mention, with legal and normal sized goalie pads and not vs the soft ass west that year. Marty might have had 8 shutouts had we had JSG's road that year. The west was PATHETIC

Pretty low class to boo at Giguere for winning the Conn Smythe, he deserved it more than anyone.
