Hi! Thank you so much for your help! I'm a single Mom and just paid $160 tow bill to have my 2005 Hyundai Tucson towed back to my house after a no start. I could only hear 1 click noise from the starter trying to engage with each key stroke. I immediately ordered a starter, but decided to go ahead and take apart the nessessary items so that when the new starter arrived, I was ready to go. When I finally got to the wire connector off of the sylinoid, I noticed green corrosion. Luckily I had some electrical parts cleaner on hand and an old toothbrush. I cleaned up the connector carefully with the parts cleaner and toothbrush. Then I used some steel wool on the starter prong that the connector clips on to. Starts and drives fine! Glory!! Thanks so much for your help you saved me the cost and install of a starter that wasn't bad!

I have to say coming across your video with the same problem I had in my car saved me a lot of money taking it to the mechanic...I changed my starter some months ago and did not think it was that issue. But after seeing your video and checking everything else. I figured that was my problem. Once taking apart the front exhaust of my 2011 Hyundai Sonata I found that the clip connected to my starter had come off...put it back in and made sure it was secured enough that it wont happen again and my car turned back on! THANK YOU!!

Thanks for this tip, Had a no start no crank yesterday. Watched your video along with several others on what to do. The last check I did before pulling the starter was shake the connector while my wife cranked it and boom, it started. My Sonata is a 2006 with a different looking connector. I will probably not be able to find a replacement part so I just cleaned the connector and smashed the blades together with some needlenoise plyers. Should work untill I find something else.

The connectors for the 2006-2008 Sonata, Veracruz and Sedona solenoid are different from the earlier and later model years leaving me to believe Hyundai realized there was an issue with the connector. I am currently sourcing them and they will be for sale on eBay in mid January 2019.

Thank you, this was my problem also. My plastic plug was really loose on the spade, I could wiggle it back and forth so I cleaned the female end of the plug with a can of mass air flow sensor cleaner. Then I cut a small 1/4" piece off the end of a hose clamp, I pounded it flat with a hammer and filed the edge's smooth. I Then inserted the small metal shim into the female end of the plug and pushed the plastic plug back onto the spade protruding from the starter solenoid . It was a very tight fit, tighter than a frogs ass, it's good to go another 300k miles!!! How tight is a frogs ass you ask? Well.......they're WATERTIGHT !!!!!!!!

By the way, my fix was low tech, I just put a little twist in the top part of the terminal so that it was tight in the socket. When I first got to the wire the socket was loose and I didn't even need to press the tab to release it. Maybe it hadn't been attached in some repair previously. Certainly tight now and hopefully fixed for a LONG while.

Just happened to me this morning, after removing the heat shield found the connecter disconnected. After reconnecting end ensuring that the locking tab was engaged it fired right up. Many thanks. Any advice on getting the heat shield off,( its very tight on the 6 cylinder model) with out skinning my knuckles would be much appreciated lol. Very limited space, if I had to replace the starter, dropping the exhaust would be necessary to remove and install. Excellent fix though saved me much time and money.

Aha. I initially thought about this (the starter wire) as my issue on my 2005 Hyundai Tucson intermittent no crank- and I guess I'll keep it in mind, but then discovered it would crank (and start) when I wiggled the key, so I'm gonna try replacing my ignition starter switch (myself) because it's cheaper than the ignition lock cylinder and key, and I feel my trouble is in this region. (Also initially thought about the neutral safety switch, the starter, and the battery of course.

After having a number of items replaced (by the dealer) we followed up on this angle. Car wouldn't start at the shop and the mechanic reached down and jiggled this connection and bingo the car started. So they replaced this connection and 1 month later we are back to square one. Effin ghost in the machine. As common as this problem is with the Sonatas, it REALLY frosts me that I can get no help from Hyundai corporate. It's like it doesn't exist as far as they are concerned. We own 3 Sonatas, 04, 06 & 07. All have been very good cars except for this problem on the 06. It is a damn shame (and expensive one) that a new car may have to be purchased for no other reason than this.

You must disconnect the small black connector that clips on to the starter solenoid. It's the ONLY clip on the starter since the other larger battery cable bolts on. Once disconnected, you should use a test light to probe the inside of the clip. Have a friend turn the car over while you have the test light probe inserted, if it lights up, your wiring is all good there, but the connector itself may bad bad to the extent that the clip still attaches to the starter but the pin does not make full contact. This is a common problem which is hard to diagnose, so I made the video to address it. If you wanted to do long term testing perhaps because you may have a new starter or something like that, then you can make a custom light that installs permanently under the edge of the hood visible when starting and then, if the light doesn't come on when you engage the starter, you know the problem is further back say at the park neutral switch. But it starts AT the starter connection no matter what you do.

Carl Schneider the connector is ON the starter. you must locate it under the exhaust manifold by removing the heat shield. After that the connector will be easy to see on the top of starter.

Jack the car up and install jack stands for safety, lay down in front of the car. Remove the plastic protector from the driver's side with a 10 mm socket. The starter is right above the exhaust pipe. I had to remove the bolts from the exhaust flange and pull it down a little in order to remove the heat shield from the starter and expose the wires and plug to work on them. You have to work at it a bit but you can get the heat shield out and pound it back in with a rubber mallet or even a block of wood. Doing this yourself will save you $400 by not taking it to a repair shop !

Hey I have this same car and I don't have the key but I need to put it in neutral to move it.. Do u have any tips to put it in neutral with out the key?
@JanmichaelJohnson6 жыл бұрын
yes there should be a shift lock slot on the center console next to the shifter pop the little plastic piece out And them you can either use a flat head screw driver or a spare key to push the shift lock with either object your using and then you can get out of park without key..

sonatas are not good cars, hands down. Just finished replacing the starters plastic actuator lever in my mothers 2.4, 2011 sonata. In doing so and researching i find there is a SHIT TON of possible no crank possibilities, recalls, and money pit stories around this car. heres a few for example. The 2 in the video, neutral safety switch, a tranny sensor, starter relays, key fob battery could keep it from turning over, various fuses. Thats just off the top of my head and all of them are common enough to have loads of info about it, which doesn't make it okay these are problems not standard wear n tear. I got the starter lever replacement done right at 3 hours for 15$ minus drive time for parts, research/prep. ridiculous that they used a plastic lever in the starter

Dont even try to say any other car could have these issues as well, although that is true the sonata has recalls involving the electrical system and even the park mode on the gear shift as well as an airbag recall. btw the "park" in this car again separate from the ebrake is weak enough that you could rock the car and snap it, boom no more braking in the park option and you either are forced to use e-brake forever or pull the tranny. SHIT CAR

Did changing the starter allow the car to start again?
@kylewilmath62016 жыл бұрын
I did everything you said plus I got a new starter but still nothing.
@bmxunderground26 жыл бұрын
Kyle Wilmath you have to start there at the plug. Use a test light to confirm 12v comes to it when the key is turned. If no 12v power there on start then you don’t do this fix, you move farther up the stream. Check the physical condition of the neutral switch. Then electrical, then back farther to the relay, and so on until you trace your problem down. There isn’t always one fix, this is just a really tricky one that’s simple to start with. You will want to watch some other videos of no start to see how they trouble shoot those areas.

bmxunderground2 I replaced the starter and battery. Checked fuses and all that. I have no idea what else to do.

Kyle Wilmath find the videos on the other items I briefly mention in the video.. also consider the other circumstances like what was happening with the car before it stopped starting

So the only way to get to this is to take off the bottom panel and heat sheild from under the car?

Yes

Would this still be a possibility if everything was there you indicated, however car makes sound of trying to turn over but fails. All electrics on. Battery checks ok. Still won't start. Mechanics can't find solution. Single parent here, trying to troubleshoot to find solution.

No, if your starter motor is turning but the engine doesn't turn over thats one issue. If the engine turns over but doesn't start thats also another issue. This video is specifically to address no start from no starter activity when the key is turned.
@robbynv99005 жыл бұрын
that's your starter. Not a cable connector causing a ground issue because it cranks.
