Charlie Sifford won the GHO in 1967 at the age of 45. He shot a final round 64. After finally being a tour Rookie when he was almost 40. What Perseverance!!!

Had tears in my eyes. No one should have to go through what Charlie did. Great man to withstand the hate and overcome.

I was born in Rhodesia, modern day Zimbabwe. I despised golf early on because my father being black was not allowed to play at any of the clubs except one. Segregation and discrimination is all i knew. How awful that people had to suffer such indignity. Mr. Sifford's story is an incredible one, he is a true champion of social justice and an absolute credit to humanity. RIP Sir.

This is lovely. And fitting. Gary Player's speech was poignant and eloquent; he has always been a class act- a great golfer who is an even better man. Kudos to the great Mr. Sifford. His place in golf's Hall of Fame is well deserved. He would have won a lot more had he not been burdened with racism and bigotry. The pressure of pro golf is hard enough without the added BS Charlie had to endure. R.I.P..

It was sometime in the '70's....I was standing at the practice range at Firestone. Player rushed up to right in front of me and began rummaging in his bag. Over my shoulder I heard: "Hey, Laddie." (I began to think: hey...you don't do this...you don't interrupt the players) "Hey, Laddie!" (you better shut up , bud! you'll get tossed out of here!) "HEY, Laddie!" Player turned...beamed...and walked up: "Hey, Charlie!" I made a little room so Sifford could kinda wedge in.... Gary (2 feet in front of me) began telling of how he got stuck in traffic....got out....flagged down some guy on a "motorbike"....drove down the shoulder of the 4-lane Main and then Warner Road to arrive just before his tee time....which was why he was rushing. And here the three of us cross paths again..... (I played the South course twice (BIG track!) and the North once (waaay more interesting))

Brilliant. I laughed, I cried and I learnt a lot about this wonderful man. Some of these Hall Of Fame inductions are compelling viewing. This one and the one with Peter Allis are my favourites, but I should watch more. Shame Tiger Woods was not in attendance.
@karenb29354 жыл бұрын
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the ceremony was held the day after Woods played in South Korea. See www.smh.com.au/sport/golf/before-tiger-it-was-charlie-20041117-gdk4ot.html IMHO, Tiger's absence allowed the spotlight to focus on Charlie Sifford as well as the other inductees. I laughed, I wept, too. I mourn this great man whom I did not know about until Woods named his infant son after his "Grandpa". Another hidden figure about whom I, too, am learning more.

Seems like a wholly unfair comment without context (like him being on another continent). Woods named his child after Charlie, so it’s not as if he did not hold him in high respect.

His speech hit me hard. Especially in a sport that was predominantly white in a racist era.
