In 2009, the PGA of America bestowed John Shippen with his PGA Membership card posthumously, and he is now recognized by the USGA as America's first golf professional.

Tiger Woods didn't face any of the kind of adversity these guys did. Once he became a heralded amateur, every door was opened to him. He grew up with every golf privilege provided by his doting parents, and rhe SoCal environment isn't particularly prejudiced. He really didn't overcome any adversity. Sadly, there are fewer black players of prominence than ever because of the gobs of money it requires.

But tiger does acknowledge that these guys that came before him paved the way for him to be able to do what he did

John Shippen was not a "laborer", he was a minister and teacher in the Shinnecock Hills Indian reservation.

Woods does not identify as black, but as "Cablinasian."

Tiger Woods isn't just black. His mother is 100% Thai and his father Earl was 50% black, 25% American Indian and 25% white. He has often called himself "caublinasian". If he were to be classified as any ethnicity it would be Asian since he's half Thai. I've never understood why people just assume he's black. Same thing with Barack Obama who everybody just said was black. He's half black, half white. He's not black.

Because some years ago they said if there’s is even 1 drop of black then that’s what they are. We can switch now when it benefits the other side

He’s black. Get over it. He’s better than any other golfer of any other race during any time in human history AND he credits his black father and Charlie Sifford for that.

You may be right regarding his mother but how do you know the exact composition of his fathers lineage? I do not care what Tiger calls himself or what you or anyone else believes because Tiger would have had the mess beat out of him at a lunch counter in the 60s. Just like any other person of color. Do you really think if he told the folks at a southern diner in 60s "stop hitting me my momma is Thai that they would say hey do not hit him because he is not black? They beat him until his black skin was covered in blood. He and you need to get over it...He is black so get over it. If Tiger was not Tiger, there are many places in this country today that would not welcome him solely because of the color of his skin, which is black.....

In the American context, he maybe considered Blakk, as it is either Blakk or Whyte as the vast majority not too long ago..
