Larry Mac saying "thank god for safer barriers" after every hard crash into the wall in this era got so old fast. We get it, tracks were starting to put in safer barriers, you don't have to shill it every time a car hits one.

I think it was alright for the first few years, since not all tracks had them initially, and especially given how violent a lot of crashes were from this time period. I don't want to think about how many serious injuries we'd have had if we didn't get them in as soon as we did. Once all the tracks on the calendar put them in though, then enough was enough.

People tend to forget how many drivers Larry Mac had seen killed or seriously injured in his 20 years before the safer barriers. Every time a car hit he was probably mentally thinking, that's a couple broke ribs, or ouch that's gotta be a broken sternum. People forget that the wrecks drivers easily walk away from now, they didn't walk away from before

An unusually violent year for the cup series. 2005 would not be better, though.

Honestly making these comps I'm genuinely surprised how many violent wrecks the Gen 4 era had. Like feels like almost every week there was one that'd make you cringe a bit. Especially before safer barriers were fully introduced at most tracks.

@@NolanRempel Right. Sometimes feels like the cup series had more violent wrecks than the lower series during this time. And say, if you compare this to 2018 for example, it's a big difference in the quantity of crashes (not even big or small, just crashes in general). I think the ease of getting side-by-side and the number of back marker teams are why the gen 4 cup era had this issue.
