He had no kick. The hot competition ran the first 200 meters in 24.40 which means their legs must turn to mush in the last 100 meters. The leaders came back to Valery in the home straight.

@@jeremyschlichting823 By Far Zottle. Wottle was so far behind at the end of the first 400m that the announcers were wondering if he was hurt. Waddle didn't even catch the back of the pack until 500m had been run. And he didn't catch the leader until the last meter of the race. This is a great race by the Russian, but it doesn't even come close to comparing with what Wottle did in Munich in 72. And Wottle won graciously without any big fanfare - no collapsing at the end of the race, no covering his hands with his face and getting all misty. No running around the track yelling #1 and posing for pic's with a flag. Wottle was one cool dude...

I recommend doing a lot of negative split interval workouts such as 6 800's starting at a somewhat challenging pace such as 2:35 and dropping 5 seconds every 2 800's. So the first two would be 2:30, the next 2 would be 2:25 and so on. Do your last 800 all out. I'm a 400 runner but I do a very similar interval workout and i've gone from a 53.8 to 52.0

Wilson, though the record holder was not a great sprinter in terms of being able to produce a great burst off a fast pace...in this race his one mistake was not going before 200m from the tape...

I have the weirdest splits ever. The fastest I can get is 2:20, but with lap times of 58 and 1:22. o.0 The fastest I've gotten with a more even pace is 2:22. I guess I'm just weird...

@slash15axl Slash you are very wrong, A sophomore on my 4x8 this year split 1:57 and under 2:00 consistently. On top of that, theres another sophomore in my league who also split 1:57. Last year at new balance outdoor nationals zavon watkins of liverpool split 1:47.99 (yes he is of proper age). I can name even more athletes who have run under 1:58 as a freshman or sophomore but that would be a further waste of my time. Maybe you just suck at running (if you are even a runner). NY represent.

@MrNony64 true...and i don't mean to downplay other races or events...ur right all races are hard...i mean look at pole vault...so technical, and a very hard field event...but i'm just saying a true 800m athlete must combine the elements of leg speed with endurance in order to perform at their best...there is very little room for error. and its is almost a uniquely exhausting race mentally and physically.
@holdencaufield200

If you are a young kid or novice reading this, the best way to run the 800 is with an even pace. If you run it in 2:00 minutes don't pass the quarter mile in 55 seconds or less. an even pace will have you flying by guys in the final 200 yards. If you don't believe me just look at dave wottle's run in the 1972 olympic finals. It doesn't look like it but he actually ran an even pace.

See thats the thing 40 miles a week isn't that much. Thats only 5.7 per day. I run roughly 8-9 miles per day. You don't suck just you could do better. I run about 60 miles a week. I have senior friends that I run with. People under estimate how much they can really do with some help and encouragement. Like I run Cross Country and in a couple of months I got up to 7 miles a day. Then winter slowed me down, but I went back to running in mid february and i'm back in shape again.

no no no NO, do not quit, you can quit running, but try the pole vault even if they do not let you, do not listen to them. my coach was pretty much the same, he didnt let me throw javelin, but i one day i throw without permission and it was a pretty good throw, so later i became a javelin thrower. try the pole vault and see if u r good at it. do not let others decide for you. next season i will try the hammer throw haha.

@kopk888 Agreed. At the same games, the men's 4x100 was equally as exciting...and these two made it sound equally as boring. Type 'athens men 4x100 relay' to hear them (posted by maroong). Then type '4x100m Final.Olympic Games,Athens,2004' to hear the BBC's proper commentary, posted by ARRISIPPY. The difference is embarrassing.

I find it strange that if Kipketer was Borzakovskiy's inspiration, why do they have the COMPLETE OPPOSITE TACTICS for winning championship races? Kipketer in his best days would frontrun the race from start to finish, whereas Borzakovskiy runs even, coming only the final meters... interesting contrast indeed.

train your butt off and do the gamut of exercise types. Do lots of long distance to build up lung capacity and sprinkle that in with some sprint work to tune up your explosive muscles. Try to do some sprints under duress, so that you're going full speed out of breath, to simulate what you'll be feeling for the last 200 meters of the race.

honestly guys you should stop bragging about your fuckin times because #1 youll never run against each other so focus on your own competition and events and #2 it takes little time (though a lot of work) to shave seconds of your PB (like Woddle did) so in a year anyone can be significantly better.
