Perhaps in a few centuries, every state in presidential elections would be called for a candidate in less than 10 minutes. Not saying that it actually would, just saying it's possible.

Mr. Hissing Cockroach Well, the difference is, that for example in Germany or Italy it's not so much interesting, if you have 2,5 or 2,6 million votes, as only the percentage counts. In the USA every vote can make a difference in states, where democrats and republicans are close by, as because of the winner takes it all princip. On the other hand, this system helps the democrats. If they would only vote by county, like for example in Germany, the republicans would always win, because even in blue states they win more countys, but with less people inside.

Mr. Hissing Cockroach And there perhabs one other reason, they don't call a race early: to not demotivate voters in the west of the country. The USA is the only fully democratic, where a election could be decided (look at the Reagan years), hours before the last polls close (the only other country with divided time zones is Russia and there the major part of the vote happenes at the end of the process in the west with Moskow and St. Petersbourgh.)
