This race is where Rossi transcended the sport. There was so much tension. Rossi was remarkable, way ahead of all the other Yamaha's and somehow beat the dominant Honda RC211V's. Whilst Yamaha/Rossi were lucky to have Welkom be the first race (short straights), it was still a giant-slaying performance. Just look at 38:51 where Rossi exited the fast right onto the back straight, the front tyre dancing to the edge of the kerb. That was the *absolute* limit. Everyone thought Rossi was crying sitting by those tyres, but he was laughing.

I loved those guys. Toby, Julian and Randy were a great trio who complimented each other well. Toby the excitable colour commentator, Julian the enthusiastic historian of motorbike racing, and Randy, the expert ex-racer. They all loved the sport and their passion was infectious.
