2005-2015 Tacoma Clutch & Flywheel Replacement Toyota 4.0 4x4

This 2010 Toyota Tacoma 4.0 1GR-FE 4x4 clutch and flywheel was so worn that it would hardly move while in gear, slipping reallllly bad. This video will show you how to remove and install a standard transmission, clutch kit and flywheel. Enjoy and thanks for watching FixItPhillip.
This procedure will work for:
Tacoma base and pre runner with 4.0 1GRFE
2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015
Fj Cruiser 2007 - 2014
2005 - 2006 Tundra 4.0 sr5 and base model.
2015 tacoma trd pro 4.0L
2005 - 2013 tacoma X-Runner 4.0L
So whether you have a 4x4 or 2wd, I hope this helps you out with removal and installation of the manual transmission, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and flywheel ect...

FixitPhillip was Awesome, I did this job almost purely by this video! My only request Phillip is that you add a diagram of the bell housing bolt pattern, I missed the two on the very top and it cost me some HOURS. But when i got those off, it was just as described. Step by Step. I really appreciate you uploading this video!!!!! I bought a new clutch, Throw out bearing, pressure plate for about $500 from Rock Auto and another $100 at a military "auto craft shop" where you can rent a lift bay and tools. The local dealership said this would have been a $2,000 job at their shop. So saved about $1,400 doing it myself! Thanks Again!!

@NickLi_ let the trans hang down at a angle a little to give you a little more room to work. and I used a 1/2 ratchet with long extensions and a swivel right before the socket.

@@MrMerajjio well it went fairly well. a couple of things that became a pain. removing all the electrical clips, they are all different. google how to remove them, it will save some time. the 2 top bolts holding the transmission housing are very difficult to remove and reinstall. also the hydraulic line and electrical harness clamp bolts. one requires long skinny arms. i made a ramp for the front wheels and put the rear on jack stands for access. also i used ratchet clamps to hold the transmission to my floor jack and almost managed to find the center of gravity. putting it back in needed a little more effort to compensate for it being off balance. i started with putting in 2 of the lower transmission bolts then jacked it up to install the uppers. lots of swearing and wondering why i was doing it myself. then i remembered saving $3000.00 was the reason. i'd do it again because i'm an old and stubborn frugal kraut. good luck.

I have the 2WD version of this transmission. The driveshaft flanges don’t have any visible bolts? I pulled the engine and am attempting to reinstall the engine but I left the trans in the truck and it’s hard getting the input and bellhousing holes to line up.

When you take off the trans crossmember, lower the Trans down at an engle and it'll be easier to get to those top trans bolts, please be sure to subscribe! Much appreciated

In the middle of dropping mine and I need a pry bar to pull the bell house away from the engine. The only concern I have is it's on ramps not a lift and also putting those top bolts in are gonna suck I had a decent 4 to 5 feet in extentions to get those out lol

I just had a new clutch installed on my 2009 tacoma.It is now very difficult to put in reverse and first gear..The shop says that it is "perfect"..It did not do this before the clutch install.Any ideas?

I have a 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4. How much is the cost for repair and the time for the work? Do you have to get inside the vehicle or can that be avoided? I am now hearing the throw out bearing making the noise.

Question: I have a 2007 2.7l 4cyl 5spd Manuel transmission coming up on 230,000miles. I have yet to replace my clutch or notice any slips or defects. The only thing is that I let my pedal out moderately far for it to catch, but again, nothing else noticed. Do you think I should replace it ASAP? Maybe I’m causing damage somewhere unknowingly? If you notice slip on acceleration or uphill you need to replace the clutch, if it's solid with no slippage in high gear at WOT you're good to go. Believe me you'll notice!

I just replaced my master and slave cylinder to solve that proble feels like new. No New clutch nessassary.

how do you line up the clutch disc? there is no pilot bearing and the alignment tool is smaller than the hole in the crankshaft....

I forgot how much simpler replacing clutches in longitudinal engines are. All I do in my shop are transverse. Why can't they all be like this

What do you use to align the clutch disc with the pilot. The plastic tool with the kit has a lot of play in the pilot bearing end and I’ve been trying all day to align my trans.

I just use the tool it comes with. It wouldn't hurt to visually look straight into the hole with your eye to see how centered it is

FixItPhillip My uncles used long bolts to help align the trans and pull the bell housing together. Thank God, at the perfect time my help came!

There is no pilot bearing on this year/model, to my knowledge the 5 speed trans is the style with a pilot bearing, 6 speed no pilot bearing

Yes I've heard thowout bearings chirp on these, usually comes in a clutch kit

I left the hydraulic line connected on this one so I didn't have to bleed it. Just removed the slave bolts and the brackets holding the hard line and pushed it aside

How about the pilot bearing? Does that not need to be replaced? And wouldn’t you need to bleed the slave to account for the thickness of the new clutch?

This Tacoma Trans design doesnt use a pilot bearing, And no you dont bleed the slave cylinder for a new/thick clutch. Typically you only need to bleed it if you replaced a master or slave cylinder or got air in system somehow.

There is an issue with the throw out bearing chirping with aftermarket clutches and pressure plate, the throw out bearing makes contact with the pressure plate

about how long did it take and cost? the dealership is telling us it is a two- tree day process and will cost us $1,500....my husband has a 2008 Toyota tacoma

I'm an independent shop in socal and our price is about 2k (parts+ labor and a recommended trans oil change) to do this job. 1500 seems more than reasonable. the reason I recommend an trans oil change when doing this job is because when the clutch gets to the end of its life, a lot more heat is generated do to friction when slipping and less material to disperse heat. Just my 2cents. good luck

Do you need to put spline grease on the input shaft?

You can put a little to help it slide back in. Just not allot so it doesn't fling onto clutch disk

I did just a hard spot to record, yes make sure the flywheel bolts to crank and pressure plate bolts are torqued to specs. Thank you for the comment!

Has anyone had trouble with their clutch making a chirping noise and actually fixed the problem? I have a 2006 Tacoma 4.0L with 107K miles and my clutch is still chirping even after having a new clutch installed recently. Some people online say its the throw out (release) bearing making noise but I'm not sure at this point.

​@@FixItPhillip After the clutch job I had the same shop replace the bearing with an Aisin brand which I bought from Toyota and the truck still makes noise. Then I replaced the clutch release cylinder using the exact part called for in the Toyota service bulletin (T-SB-0365-10) but to no avail. I've read that this issue could lead to bigger problems so I'd like to fix it somehow. Do you have any suggestions? Do you think the shop might have done a poor job and that I should get a full clutch job again some place else?

Tacoma flywheel bolts are TYY 22ft pnds +90 degrees is TTY DO NOT REUSE!. Recommend replacing unless you have no option. $5 each from Toyota! X10 of them.
