I was a Channel 4 cameraman on this Ashes. It was one of the most exciting series. It is fantastic that the producer edited all these shots that we provide that seldom get into the main match coverage. Fantastic job..

McGrath is probably the most consistent, accurate fast bowler to every walk onto a cricket pitch. Well worth a react.

McGrath is up there but Curtly Ambrose holds that title.

Learn more about the legend Glenn McGrath... He was a maestro of seam bowling. No out of the box bowling, simple line and length, just some swing, and impeccable precision. He will bowl there where you are most uncomfortable and he won't change that pitch. Again and again.....that's the consistency in his accuracy he had. Arguably the greatest seam bowler the world has ever seen.....

In 1932-33 test series which became known as the infamous bodyline series where the English bowlers targeted Australian batsmen (especially Sir Don Bradman ). It was a tactic where most of the fielders were placed on the leg side of the batsmen mainly in a ring close to the batsmen with a couple patrolling the leg side boundary. The bowler would then bowl targeted bouncers at the batsman's head and body making it difficult to score and with no helmets and pitches that were not as flat as they are now the batsmen were in serious danger. The tactic even had the Governments of both countries embroiled in a diplomatic war of words that actually had a deleterious effect on the relationship between the two countries.

Let me tell you about the last great West Indian Side I saw. It had the following players 1.Desmond Haynes 2.Gordon Greenidge 3.Richie Richardson 4. Viv Richards 5.Brian Lara 6. Carl Hooper 7. Jeff Dujon 8. Malcolm Marshall 9. Patrick Patterson 10. Courtney Walsh 11. Curtly Ambrose. Man, back in the mid 80s through to early nineties this was my favourite team. Destructive batsmen that could smash you everywhere to another coming of the 4 horsemen. I once saw an Ambrose spell of 7-1 at the WACA. Eventually the figures were 7-25 but for a long part it was 7 wickets for 1 run!!! He was unplayable. He was so big the ball would be a bouncer if he pitched it at a good length. Basically each of his balls would get to chest high and there were pitched up so high it was extremely difficult to judge the bounce and speed and lateral movement of the ball. David Boon, who was at the time, the number 1 test batsman got destroyed by this monster. And there's Marshall too. Small in height but an excellent strategist who could move the ball either way. Their openers were the best openers I've seen apart from Hayden and Langer. This team playing that Australian team from late 90s - mid 2000s would've been great to see but my money would've been on the Windies. Viv used to walk out so slow and deliberate, wearing a fucking cap against fast bowling lol!! I've never seen anyone just come on the field and announce with body language that buddy this is my thing, your bowling on my field, that's my ball you're bowling, that's my field your walking on. When I hit you for 6, that's my sky you'll be looking at punk! The West Indies were every non Caribbean's 2nd favourite team. Oh, how we all wish for another revival of the mighty Windies but sadly the NBA is more attractive and more lucrative for young athletes in the Caribbean. One can only hope

It’s important to remember that Australia held the ashes for 18 years before this series and had not just beat England but destroyed them during that time... This was the first time England had built a side people thought could give them a real challenge and even so they were pretty big underdogs. Australia were juggernauts and bullies, England had to show they were tough and would stand up to them, as you can see they did that on the first day with the ball but then McGrath did what he does( which is dominate at lords) and England collapsed... Kevin Pietersen on debut showed he wasn’t haunted by the failures of the past and took it to the Aussies to restore some credibility atleast Ultimately in this first test Australia won fairly easily and left England needing to dig deep and regroup before the next test and not allow Australia to dominate them as usual It’s the first time I remember cricket being on both the back and the front pages of the newspapers as this series caught the nations attention and was on free to air TV... was the best summer ever IMO and without doubt the best cricket series that I’ve ever seen.

Then with McGrath going down injured before the Second Test the lack of depth in the Australian attack was exposed, Shane Warne excepted. This led to, as you say, the greatest Test series ever played.

So glad you are doing this series. England v Australia is the oldest contest in cricket history and the Ashes is widely considered the most important test series of them all. 2005 was special ashes, both teams at the time were the best in the world but England hadn't won the ashes since 1987. There is debate but this is often considered the greatest Test series of all time it will always be for me. Keep watching the drama because It's only just begun
@muzza19674 жыл бұрын
When you say Australia is notorious for hitting batmans, you need to check your history, england started it with a tactic called bodyline in the 30's. Also Australian pitches bounce more than any other countries.

In the shorter forms of the game it is much harder to pepper someone with bouncers due to rules. You can only go above shoulder height for 1 (T20) or 2 (ODI) balls in the over and umpires will call wides more freely for anything over the head.
@grahamkelly5204 жыл бұрын
I repeat my comment from the other channel. Everything went Englands way. After his man of the match first test performance if McGrath had not freakishly trod on a ball in the warmup for the second test Australia would have been too good especially with Warne taking 40 wickets. Cheers

The two reasons that you don't see bouncers more regularly are one the new rules of two bouncers an over, as well as, there's too cricket matches. It's takes alot energy to bowl bouncers regularly and due the cricket schedule with test, odi and t20s fast bowlers are more reluctant to bowl it and risk injury

Only way to win tests against Australia now a days is if somehow the opposing team can take Steven Smith out of the equation (injury, ban, corona, luck etc). Decoding his weakness in recent years (tests) has been a very frustrating pursuit for current bowlers around the world. You can't manipulate pitch conditions much, as it may kill your own batsmen more nullifying any such advantage.

Watch this Ashes documentary, *The story of the greatest Ashes series of all time - England vs Australia 2005* kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3SxoH6HdqeNe9U 8:15 😍 that sound is like music to my ears 8:38 I heard in some video McGrath explaining that Batsmen raise their Bats every time they score big like a Century, then McGrath & other AUS Bowlers one day decided they too will now raise the Ball every time they achieve a Bowling feat like McGrath there took his 500th Wicket & a 5 Wicket Haul. 15:33 Absolutely! Cricket needs aggressive Bowling. In limited overs especially Cricket administrators have made Bouncers rare by putting a limit of just 1 Bouncer per over (needs 2 at least imo). The obsession with big shots, big scores & 6s is really annoying.
