Best quote I've heard about facing the Windies in that era , " It wasn't about winning , it was about losing with some sort of dignity " , they were that terrifying.

I started watching cricket on TV with that 1975 series. It was great, and I think the West Indies were held in very high regard here - certainly way above our opinions of the other teams at the time. But, we did have Lilllee and Thompson, as well as some great batsmen. It turned out the West Indies had a seemingly endless supply of top level fast bowlers over the succeeding 20 years or so. Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd were huge figures, and of course Holding, Roberts, and the rest of the team were great. You should watch Curtly Ambrose get 7 wickets for 2 runs against Australia a few years later.

As a kid I watched West Indies belt Australia every second summer in the 80s. Regardless they were super popular with the Australian public. What a team.

That was a great team, not just Viv Richards, but Greenidge, Haynes, Lloyd, Gomes, Kalicharan, Murray, Garner (their slow bowler), Croft, Roberts and Holding

I remember when we lost to India in 1975. I watched a game at the oval in Trinidad.My mom was a huge cricket fan and my parents would take the family to see cricket. I would have been 11 years old. I remember how sad my mom was when we lost but at that time i never undrstood how the loss in australia had affected the team. I was privedged though to see some great legends like gavaskar and viv richards play. I remember how the crowd would cheer when they announced richards was up to bat and my mom would get excited to see him play. He was a giant in the west indies.

Actually it was England and Tony Grieg’s Taunt and insult , in the English Press , that he will make “West Indies Grovel” that made West Indies angry and had Clive Lloyd build the team with 5 to 6 fearsome Bowlers. Watch the Movie/Documentary “Fire in Babylon” to get the full Backstory. West Indies then literally made Tony Greig “Grovel” and made it as Headlines.

No, in Fire in Babylon lLive Lyod says it was the tour of Australia that led him to change their approach, their mindset. Holding has goen onr ecord sayign the same thing. The Tony Grieg thing was just added fuel for a particular test series.

I am a west Indian and I was born in 1988. I didn't get to see all of this. I started paying attention to cricket from 1995 when I was 7. Of course, the people I remember growing up were Walsh, Ambrose, Lara, Hooper and Chanderpaul. Of course there were others but I never got this version of West Indies. I basically witnessed cricket at the time the downfall of WI began.

8-13 Feb 1980 West Indies Lost to NZ in the first of 3 tests. Tests 2 & 3 were drawn. NZ for the series win. The West Indies came for a holiday and it got ugly. I was at the opening game of the tour, a 1 day in Christchurch. At about 3:30pm half the crowd have left as NZ was 80 for 5 chasing 203. The crowd return by about 4:30 as we inched closer to the target, the noise was incredible. NZ went on to win, 9 down with 2 balls to spare. A great day.

Another thing Cricket Raaz didn't mentioned that 1975 tour of Australia the West Indies was greeted with a whole racist insult by crowd as well as people of Australia at that time. WI were battling the Aussies on and off the field.
@damodeste
@damodeste Жыл бұрын
I apologise if my comment seems derogatory it wasn't my intent to label Australian as racist. I was trying to express the experiences West Indies players when through "at that time". Players weren't allowed certain restaurants or hotels and insults were hailed at them entering & exiting their tour buses. It was so bad on and off the field Holding and i think Greenridge broke down in tears.

Gabe the ban for Campbell was for not reporting his sample by the designated time. Usually the penalty was a 2 year ban. I'm interested as to why this time around, it was 4 years

Charles was on out 2012 winning team. I don't necessarily agree with his selection as I would have preferred Fletcher but I'll rock with my team. Also not too made at the performance in Australia. 2 drops in the final over costed us the first game but we did fight.
