As someone who has been in the field for almost 10 years as a mech/"parts hanger", you are doing a awesome job and are constantly teaching me things I should have learned years ago. Keep up your channel, you are doing awesome work. I guarantee you are helping people like me(who are too scared to admit it). You are a better technician than 70% of "techs" in the field who shotgun parts in lieu of actual diagnoses.

So nice to see a video that shows full learning curve. I bet a lot of other channels would have edited it to show that they "knew" that the bigger spark could be incorrect. Love it , correct way to learn.. raw and unedited. Also gives people confidence to ask further questions even if they think they have found it. Excellent

Your waste spark coil is internally shorted and breaking down under load, as evidenced by your scope on #3 at higher rpm. It might also account for the bank 2 O2 code, since #4 had a weak spark at idle.

Just saw this... I love your "Test don't guess" philosophy. As a retired professional wrench bender, we have a couple of differences. 1) Time is money & 2) experience breeds patterns. Like, Subaru's have a coil issue, so I, as a professional would have zoomed in on a coil test, all man made things have inherent weaknesses. But, that's not what you teach a DIY. So, Good job! And yes, in a waste spark coil system in which a coil is shared by two cylinders, both cylinders will be affected. Note: each coil is shared (4 stroke) with it's opposite cylinder in the firing order. Taking the firing order, dividing it in 1/2 and stacking it will always give you the companion cylinders, just in case someone else has been there first. Trick for difficult diagnosis. If you find that you have exhausted all your avenues of testing and you can't determine which of the last two possibilities is correct, (and this will happen). Call your dealer or parts supplier and find out which part they stock. Not scientific in the purest sense, but it can reinforce your own diagnosis. They don't stock parts that they don't sell. I love your channel.
@garrettyoung6367
@garrettyoung6367 5 жыл бұрын
One plug fires positive and other negative. This is why you had to invert the firing line to see. Cylinder 3 and 4 fire at the "same time" and are in a series circuit on the secondary side of the coil. Energy leaves one side of the coil and returns on the other side. Windex works better than the test light for finding leaking plug wires as long as not in area of wire which is inside of the head. I have watched a few of your videos, but you really need to change wires also as the coil has a carbon tracking problem some where. Carbon tracking is caused by high voltage burning the carbon out of the air leaving a semiconductor trail. IF this carbon tracking happens to be around the tower it would have transfered material onto your plug wire. Then the plug wire would transfer material back to your new coil causing repeat failure after time until both are changed at the same time. Also worn plugs are going to stress your secondary insulation, and or any fuel delivery, vacuum leaks, valve sealing issuses etc
@atrayyu3016
@atrayyu3016 5 жыл бұрын
Good info, He did change the wires and plugs. But for the science of the diagnosis, he only changed the coil to validate the diagnosis, later changing the plugs and wires for good health and preventive maintenance.

we had a Subaru towed in from another shop who couldn't figure out a problem. It was a bad wire but it was weird that it had a dead miss at times and no code at all for the bad cylinder. Eventually a code set but it took nearly catalyst damaging time to do it. I was shocked that it didn't have new plugs and wires on it and to my fault I went straight to compression, assuming they already checked spark! Lesson learned...

I had a 1993 Town and Country that had an ignition block and wires. It would miss sometimes, die sometimes and run really well sometimes. I found the problem one day when I had my inductive timing light on a cylinder. As I moved farther from the coil, the light would flash less and less. Turned out my plug wires were rotted out at the plug. Replaced the wires and it ran better than it had in years. The wires looked great on the outside.

Right on, Matt. You're beginning to show some "technician's thinking" (swap first, take an easier path first, etc). It always comes down to: verify symptom, collect data, follow the evidence to get to the 3-C's (Complaint, Cause, Correction). Good jub!

Thanks James! Do keep in mind that often the diagnostic procedure i use in the videos is vastly different than what i might do when not filming (though the thought process is always the same). when filming i often take longer approaches because of the tutorial aspect or just to show a new tool or a concept or principle. If I wasn’t filming this I would probably have done this diagnosis the same way as on film though with the exception that I would have researched this was a waste-spark design first and thus would have pinpointed the coil much faster.

Developed a rough idle which got progressively worse until i decided to try sort it out. Smells rich at idle and very rough almost a missfire (intermittent). Long term Fuel trims at idle and up to 1500rpm with no load are reaching -20%. Under load or over 2000rpm trims come down towards zero and no issue with power. You name it i have checked/replaced it. Spark plugs, coils, injectors, fuel pressure and flow, air leaks, compression, cylinder leakage, valve timing all triple checked. The only thing slightly off is vacuum which is around 16mmhg which is a little low. Cheers

I noticed that you poked the test light probe into the spark plug tube when replacing the boots during diagnosis. What is the reason or theory behind that particular action? Does it perhaps help keep the coil from overheating by letting that electrical energy dissipate where it otherwise would have manifested itself as heat in the coil? Excellent video.Always love your content. Quick question for you: Seeing as how spark between 3 and 4 were so compromised by the coil, do you think the length of the wires could have affected or even aided to indicate the malfunctioning coil? IE, #4 being longer with more resistance? I Could easily just over or under thinking it.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 5 жыл бұрын
Good thinking - the extra resistance from the wire length variation causing strain on one coil output. However the additional resistance is negligible. More likely it is carbon tracking that resulted from some other issue with the secondary (worn plug or wire) that ultimately injured the coil, but not wire length itself. This is the reason you should always change plugs and wires on a bad coil- odds are they were the cause of the coil failure. But not wire length alone.

Hi there, I have VW Golf MK4 1.6 Petrol 16V 2003, for a while it's used to Come up with Emission workshop light as soon as I start the car or while am driving and I immediately know it was to do with my exhaust system because it used to make noise at idle or driving. However I ignored the issue and at the same time I had a slip clutch system. Where the car couldn't pick up speed at the gas pedal. So I replaced the clutch kit. Immediately I also replaced the timing belt kit. Nothing much changed still there was a loss of power. Then one day I was reversing into a driveway a loud blust came from underneath the car, checking on it, the exhaust system between the CAT and the rear silencer was split open. Making loud noise from underneath the exhaust manifold then I received code P0106 and 17550. Could it be the exhaust manifold with the oxygen sensor bank1. I got a new exhaust system from the front-pipe to the rear. Still am getting noise from underneath. Another issue is still low power, and I hear hissing noise from the throttle body whenever I step on the gas pedal. Therefore I suspect an air leak around the intake system. I need some guidance please.

A couple things I felt you could have mentioned to a DIYer who is interested in learning and/ or is new to this is that you could not do the spark test with an LED test light. Also, there are cheaper alternatives to scopes that most people may be able to afford or save up for like the single channel U-SCOPE or the two channel Pico Scope. @SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 5 жыл бұрын
it would on the scope for sure however the spark gap test doesn’t involve the plugs so whether or not the wasted spark jumps a plug or not you still get spark at the test light
@byoung9627
@byoung9627 5 жыл бұрын
Schrodingers Box I would think it still involves the second plug of the pair. No?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 5 жыл бұрын
My guess, based on this case study, is that if the second plug has high resistance or is open then you would see the gap jumped to the test light increase. I assume he spark gap it’s like a string- the string should be equal between the 2 spark plugs. If one plug has a high resistance the string is longer on the other plug (like what happened with #3 and 4 in this video). I assume if I left one waste spark wire disconnected with no spark and tested gap at the companion cylinder the full length of that string would allow a massive jump because all the spark energy is at just one side now. Not totally sure on that. I’ll have to learn more about it. But I do know that the spark energy should be equal at all cylinders. I do assume variables on one side of the waste spark will affect the other side though, so i agree with you
@bartscave
@bartscave 5 жыл бұрын
@@SchrodingersBox My guess is that the high energy available on the #3 wire was due to an open in wire or coil on it's companion cyl. The other wire with less energy is because it is limited by whatever the spark plug gap is on it's companion is. So the second plug of the pair limits KV by bleeding it to ground after it jumps the gap. So a shorted plug would affect both cylinders and likewise an open would increase potential energy. Just a guess, but it makes me wonder about how one cyl affects its mate.I'm going to have to study waste spark a little more, now I'm curious.

I guess this is where familiarity comes in. Coils have been an issue to those of us that regularly work on Subaru and many other Japanese based vehicles and as you say, mileage is irrelevant. It is quick and easy to try an ignition coil (we have a known good used Subaru one) to confirm whether the problem is or isn't coil based. This is obviously a very non scientific approach but achieves results more than 90% of the time. We also regularly use the moving of parts to another cylinder on non waste spark coil over plug systems to see if the recorded misfire moves. If an American vehicle comes in however, we have to go back to proper diagnostic methods like you did with this vehicle, as we are far less familiar with these. I am sure there must be known issues with certain American vehicles that you can say with reasonable confidence, that is most likely "this part".

Yes or even more likely- what if you can't even access the spark plugs without removing the intake which is more and more common! This allows you to see if you even have to go through all that in the first place!

I would say the P0303 was correct since the scope did show incorrect firing on #3. Probably bad insulation in the coil causing the #4 spark jumping over to #3. Still enough voltage to fire #4 but it also causes #3 to fire at the wrong time.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. This is where the scope is the only way you can confirm it- indeed the misfire was on #3 only. I was just misled by seeing what I thought was a healthy spark.

For those that do not want to watch the entire video (And why wouldn't you??? It's good stuff). Subaru has the system setup so then when the CEL comes on? It will flash your cruse light and disable it (the cruse control system) We've got an 07 Forester and it triggered a P0420 code (leaky exhaust of all things before the cat conv.. Same thing...Really surprises ya when going down the highway. Basically it's an attention getter

Nice one. Now, you're likely to get some who will say that marginal plug/wire could cause the coil to fail. I get it. Both ways. Now just wondering if you did change them out based on that or on some other philosophy? Nice to see a new video from you.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 5 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly. The reason I would always change plugs and wires with a coil is in the case that the coil failed due to resistance in one of those parts. Don’t want the new coil to fail for same reason. In this car because I switched the wires around I know the wires are fine but the plugs were never tested.
